I opened my copy of national geographic and was reading it. To my supprise i came to piece on a socialist commune in ozarks called east wind. In 1973 some friends left boston to create a socialist revolution commune called east wind which name based on a quote by Mao "The east wind is prevailing over the west.

Sounds interesting, however i dont think that communes on their own are hte way to go about achieving socialism. If we all withdraw ourselves from the system we can't change it.

Just sounds like a bunch of Hippies who were fed Marx.

Holy shit.
I live IN the Ozarks. Maybe I shall pay these socialists a visit. As gazonkgb said, they were probably hippies who were fed Marx.
The problem with these communes is that they can't self-sustain very easily. It takes a very strong commitment to stay, and even then you don't really WANT to stay.
But yes, I shall definately check this out.

Clarksist, if you could, describe their community. Their website is the usual style ('this place is good to live, we want members, it is scenic etc., etc.'), so it doesn't really tell one much at all. It sounds interesting and worth looking into, although it does seem a bit like a hippie retreat, as has been said. But, interesting nonetheless.

Personally I thnk communes are a great idea, having spent time in a few near where I live. I was doing a fewmonths a year in them whilst I was in highschool, but working life, and further education kind of slowed the time I could commit. However as soon as I have finished with society I want to spend more time in that lifestyle, I love it and don't care about stigma or lack of creature comforts.
Whilst I am not suggesting that everyone should run off and join a commune, it does work for some, and there are FAR worse ways to live. I can't wait until next April when Iwill be out again fora few months.
If everyone withdrew from society, there would be no need to change it.
What a waste of time: 'we can't be arsed to help the workers gain power so we'll just abandon them and live like we think they should.'

Well since they actually make stuff and sell it, it isn't quite the "commune" one would think.
Plus, they were workers in capitalism (in a way they still are) so all they've done is determine how they will live. They haven't exactly "abandoned" the workers.

That's cool, it looks slightly amish though. Also, I can't find any mention of socialism, Mao, or anything leftist on their site.

Could someone post links to other commune's websites. I know of one called Rainbow Farm near me, but the FBI went all gung-ho on it and the leader of it burned it down. Not everyone would call it a commune but it was definetly a hippie hangout.

Showing that such a lifestyle is possible by living as a role model is hardly "abandoning" anyone. Before there can be change on a massive scale, people have to want it. They are not going to want it if they think it is impossible.
