View Full Version : Where do we draw the line?

Hello. Now, I realize, that in a Capitalist society, there has to be some place to draw the line. I am talking about, of course, using capitalist products, etc. For example... I hate Micro$oft. They are an evil Corporation and are monopolists and Capitalists. But, my father insists on buying me an XBOX360 for my upcominng birthday, and you can see my predicament. Where do we draw the line? Where does it become unacceptable to buy capitalist products? Yes, I want the thing, but NO, I do NOT want to give any money to M$. I don't know how to convince him otherwise. Any ideas on this?

Get the Xbox.

I'm not going to deny that Microsoft are a bunch of arseholes, but you're only kidding yourself if you think that other businessmen are much more "nice". They all want to make as much money as they can if they have the opportunity. Unless you want to build your own console and live like a hermit, you might as well get the Xbox and not worry about it.

I don't think there's much of a line to be drawn on this issue. However I think the best way to "fight" capitalism, in terms of what you buy and don't buy, is to be as stingy and tight-fisted as possible, and to only buy what you can actually use and avoid buying it if another...opportunity...arises.

Actually, no. Not all of us see your predicament that clearly. If you dislike M$ so much, as you should, then don't get the XBOX. It's really a simple issue. If you call yourself "radical" or "revolutionary," why should you spend more than 10 seconds thinking about a dumb consumerist product? Find cheap, intelligent, subversive, productive, enlightening ways to entertain yourself. They're out there.

Ha ha  . That's quite funny. It's clear you want the system and your parents are rich enough to buy it for your birthday. Yes, i can understand your hopeless position

Really, get it if you want - there's nothing wrong with it. Although i recommend getting a DC, really cheap and has loads of classic, innovative games that you can buy cheap. Sega is a creative company that is not very good at business :D

Thanks for the input, guys.

EDIT: ^ I used to have a DC, but I came home one day and my dumbass brother sold it for like $30 to some stupid kid. Well, that was the end of that. Great system, though.

If your dad buys you the x-box you should smash it up with a hammer.Therefor he will never buy you such a thing again !

You're a traitor to the revolution if you don't smash up your x-box!!!!
Smashing up the x-box is a defeat of the bourgeosie !!!!
:D Just kidding,hahahaha :D

Steal one. You can still play the console with a guilt free conscience because you know you have screwed 00000000000000000000000000000000.1% of the corporation rofl.

Seriously, why not get it?

It isn't as if not having your father get you this gift is going to "damage" the revolution. If it did, of course you shouldn't.

But leisure and fun are a BIG part of life.

Never give up on the oppurtunity to have fun and leisure unless it impedes the revolution.

In other words, don't play the Xbox 360 if it is going to stop you from crushing the system, as revolution is the only way to crush it. Not attrition.

Also your dad doesn't chose what you get for your birthday does he? So this question is actually the moral dilemna with yourself

Thank you for the reply, Comrade.

Well, It isn't like 1 XB360 out of 500 Million is going to do any damage to M$. It's not going to harm the Revolution or my ideals. Besides, I would feel like a real prick saying "no I don't want that $360 gift" So yes, I will probably let him buy it for me.

Yes but the piece you were replying to in that post was adressing that you want it, it's not him who chooses you present?

No, he doesn't choose my present, but he offered to get me one because he knows how much I like video games since I'm always talking about 'em, and it would be mean as hell to just say "no". Like was stated, fun and leisure are a very big part of life, and I am very thankful for what I have been given in terms of fun and leisure.

Wouldn't attachment to consumer society impede the revolution?

No one here is against fun and liesure. Personally, I just think video games make kids into unproductive, zombie-like creatures.

Maybe you don't understand what revolution should be used for: uprising to crush oppression.

Being materialistic doesn't make you anti-communist. We should be revolting because capitalism takes away our freedoms, not because its ridiculous to have so much stuff.

While I do think that too much consumerism and materialistic beliefs can be poisonous, getting a Xbox 360 is NOT being overly materialistic.

Look at it this way about how many rollex's did Che have ?

Its just an xbox, its not like your dad is forcefully buying you a hooker to spend the night with. and if he did, my advice to you would just be to hold her and don't have sex with her. Show her that people aren't just sex maniacs only out for themselves.
Anyways, I doubt your dad would do such a thing as that. What kind've dad would do that ?

You shouldn't beat yourself up over an xbox. Its a gift, enjoy it !

Have fun killing cops on grand theft auto !

Think logically. The revolution isn't dependent on what products you buy or don't buy.
