Sounds a bit generic.
Just mediocore enough to hook people who can't handle real reggae.
Try the Aggrolites.

I don't think he is trying to be 'real reggae'.
generic? mediocore? I really never heard anything quit like this. The songs have a good rhythm and the vocals are meshed beautifully. He was obvioulsy greatly influenced by regae but his music is distinctive from other reggae.
To each his own i guess.
I would love to hear the Aggroltes. I could not find any of their music, if you could send me an albume or a link i would be very grateful.

Whatever homie, I'm not a virgin to reggae and I still think this guy is the shit. He has his own style which doesn't end up getting tired. And Live at Stubbs is one of the few cd's that I've ever been able to listen to non stop over and over again. I just got it like last week and I haven't stopped listening to it.
I never would've guessed it was a hasidic jew when I first heard king without a crown either. crazy shit. You should check out Beat Box, just because, or Warrior, the best song on the cd.

For me, it's hard to like any reggae that isn't Jamaican. Not to say it doesn't happen, I listen to a lot of non-Jamaican reggae, but it's generally pretty hard for a white guy to sound good singing for a reggae band, especially when they try to fake an accent.
With that said, I'll admit that I have only heard about half of one album. But still, I stand by the my description. It sounds like what it is, a white guy trying to sound Jamaican. I don't see why people feel like they have to fake an accent to sing reggae. Plenty of bands (The Slackers, The Piestasters, Hepcat, The Aggrolites) who aren't Jamaican sound good singing in their regular American accents, I see no need to put on a Jamaican voice.
It sounds generic to me, I don't hate it, I'd probably even listen to it, I just think it's mediocore.
The Aggrolites are probably more on the Ska/Rocksteady side, but they're really good. I have the album on Soulseek if you want to download it.

Well now that you've mentioned it, it never occured to me that he may be faking an accent. Which is hilarious if true, but either way, he pulls it off really well. Maybe that's why it never occured to me. Kind of like how I didn't know the guy who did red red wine was white. But who cares.
I'd be down for some aggrolites but I don't have Soulseek so I'll sit out in the dark for a while until I see it at the best buy or somethng. :(

Actually, that's an old song from the 60's done by Tony Tribe, a black Jamaican. UB-40, the hacks you are refering to, covered that song much later.
As far as Matisayahu, he's a white guy from New York who sounds Jamaican, I'm guessing the accent is a bit contrived.

Thanks for educating me on that Tyler. Tony Tribe is the shit.
But still, if you listened to some more Matisyahu you'd be able to hear how he isn't faking an accent cus in some songs he like sings. Umm yeah.
You'll like it, I promise, just have an open mind. I bet if you wouldn't of known he was a white dude you would've like him. Come on now.

Well, no, I've got to disagree. I've heard him sing, I've heard the whole album. Sometimes he sounds Jamaican, sometimes he doesn't. His accent is contrived, there is no question.

Haha, you're acting like I haven't heard his music yet, but I have.
I actually came into it with a really open mind, I expected to like it a lot because a guy who's tastes I respect reccomended it. But I listened, and my open mind is quickly being closed. It has nothing to do with him being white, I just don't think his music is particularly exciting.
Like I said, I don't mind it, I just think it's kind of average, which, to me, means kind of boring.
But don't let me ruin the fun

And hey, if you want to get at ML, just listen to the song linked in his sig. It makes Matisyahu look pretty fucking good.

Congratulations, that is probably the most ridiculous thing posted on the internet all day, anywhere.
Only idiots don't like mashed potatoes.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the quality of the music, but if it matters, at least 3 quarters of the music I listen to is political. (Unless by political you mean masturbatory odes to dead politicians)

I'm not cool enough to know who that is. Who is that?

I like Hepcat, but I also really like Matisyahu. I think Shake Off the Dust is a better albume then Live at Stubbs. So if you check him out don't disregard until you listen to Shake Off the Dust.
Oh, and he is not from New York, he moved to New York, he is from West Chester, which is like an hour from me.
I am no idiot, Fuck Mashed Potatoes!
