Have you heard (of) them?? My friend lent me their first album about a month ago and it was ALL i listened to for about 2 weeks. And I listen to music way too much. Their 2nd album is quite good as well, though I would say not as good as their first. By the way, if you've heard "The Widow," it's way down on my list of their best stuff, so give them a second chance.

"The group mixes rock and ambience in ways never known before. Their command of English (and [Spanish]) walks the line between genius and sanity. There is NO band around today that I know of that sound anything like The Mars Volta, and in this world of clone group after clone group, that is the highest compliment I can imagine offering."

What I've heard is pretty good, they kinda remind me of Dream Theater in their style. But I'll always prefer Dream Theater (Scenes From A Memory is the ultimate prog album).

I think they try to hard to sound weird.

I haven't heard enough of them though, I should check them out.

I was really into prog when their first album came out, so I absolutely loved it. A lot.
When their second album came out, I wasn't really anymore, so I think I listened to it once, wasn't very impressed and didn't even pay much attention.
Their first album doesn't really "do it" for me anymore either.

I bought their first cd last month when I was conflicted over whether I should buy the new or the old one. I got home home and listened to it and was like "fuck"; there was only one song I liked. I knew I shoulda bought the new one but oh well.

"te chingastes guey" as my brother would tell me

That's funny, because most people, myself included, prefer their first album to Frances the Mute. On Frances, it did seem as though they were trying way too hard. You're not Pink Floyd, there's no reason to play random noises for 7 minutes.

All in all, I still love them (both albums)...

If you like massive sprawling proggy metally Mars Volta-y stuff, I recommend you try out Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory. Its bleeding amazing. Got some classic songs on there!
