I really don't have that much music and I was wondering if any of you had some good suggestions. Listen to Nirvana and Kasabian most the time cause I never really got around to buying a lot of music. Any suggestions?

If you like Nirvana try the TEN album by Pearl Jam, also The Breeders' Pod album was one of Kurt Cobain's favourites and its my all time fave album for many reasons. I also have a particular love of Megadeth, they're well worth a look, I'd recommend Youthanasia ( a bit mainstream) and Rust In Peace (mega-heavy). If you like Megadeth then Pantera are worth a look, and their Best Of is amazing.
I also recommend you check out Joy Division (moody stuff, a bit like a better, more dystopian Nirvana), L7 (a bit over militant but oh-so-excellent female punk band), Bob Dylan ('nuff said), X-Ray Spex (the definitive punk band in my opinion, they encapsulate everything that made the movement brilliant), The Clash (fantastic punk band, London Calling is amazing), Pixies are really good but an acquired taste, as are The Vaselines. REM's Automatic For The People is an essential purchase for anything, I like Ani DiFranco a lot (although not everyone here agrees with my opinion, so check her out first) and have been listening to Bruce Springsteen quite a bit lately (his best of's pretty good, Devils And Dust is a classic album as well, especially considering how recent it is, check out Born To Run, The River, Badlands, Atlantic City and Born In The USA). Steve Earle's another one I personally love, his latest (The Revolution Starts Now) is one of my fave albums and quite frankly blew me away when I first heard it. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are pretty good, particularly Californication and BloodSugarSexMagik which are excellent, but I understand if you dislike them.
I could go on for ages, but the above bands encompass most of what I've been into lately and my personal faves.

Any recomendations for Joy Division, Bob Dylan, and X-Ray Spex? Also thanks a lot for that list The Forum Idiot. It was almost exactly what I was hoping for.

No problem, here are the albums I'd recommend by 'em:
Joy Division - Substance (its their first best of and combines a collection of their hits as well as quite a few rarities and unreleased ones, a very nice CD)
Bob Dylan - My personal favourite is Blood On The Tracks, but its really depressing and most people would recommend Bringing It All Back Home or Highway 61 Revisited, or possibly Blonde On Blonde (BoB has two stand out classics, while the others are basically good the whole way through)
X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents was their only album, but their is a "sooped up" double CD version called "X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents - The Anthology" which has loads of stuff on there. They're a bit of an acquired taste and the lead singer (Poly Styrene)'s voice is a bit shrill, she's really good though. And don't let anyone fool you by saying "Identity" and "Oh Bondage, Up Yours" are their only good songs.

If you like Nirvana and good lyrics, try anything by The Germs.
The Forum Idiot
26th July 2005, 18:55
Yea, the Germs are pretty cool. Only heard a couple songs but they rock. Apparently Kurt Cobain was a big fan of Gang Of Four which are pretty good as well, very different music but pretty good.

Luscero (sp?)
Alice in Chains
Meatpuppets
The Melvins
That is all for now.

Well, considering that both genres are dying (let's face it, gangsta rap vs pop punk and neither wins) and you want this guy into "the way forward" shouldn't we be suggesting new-wave blues and/or folk?
Having something against rock which you probably haven't even tried much of is a bit stereotypical. I try to be open-minded to genres but you clearly don't. Do you even know what goth started off as? And from what he's said he likes I think its pretty clear that rock/metal/punk/goth is his kinda thing.
But while on the subject of rap, Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show and It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back are amazing.

Rap is mainly materialistic and capitalistic. How can you even deem its the only way forward.
Yea theres stuff like Public Enemey, NAS, and Tupac. But those are few and far between.

How is Tupac not capitalistic?
What's funny is that his mother was a Black Panther. And then he is involved in one of the most publicized african-american splintering fued of pop culture.

If you like Kasabian, then i suggest you look into Kings of Leon, Starsailor, Idlewild, The Music, Razorlight, the Libertines, Manic Street Preachers and bands like that. Soft rock/indie rock.
If you like Nirvana, then I can think of a lot of bands you make like, Silverchair, Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, etc.

temple of the dog
alice in chains - dirt
mother love bone
radiohead (anything you can find)
the eels(whichever album it is with saturday morning on)
no hope in new jersey (when their album comes out)
the ga ga's (if you like that kind of sleazy thing)
Regicidal Insomniac

I don't care what you're into, Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible' is required listening. After that I suggest looking into Sonic Youth (particularly the album 'Dirty'), The Weakerthans (if you can find them, make a bee-line for 'Left & Leaving'), Against Me! (specifically 'Reinventing Axl Rose'), and any piece of Radiohead.

or possibly Blonde On Blonde (BoB has two stand out classics, while the others are basically good the whole way through)
False. At least 8 out of the 14 songs are classics.
But to answer the topic, go here (http://starling.rinet.ru/music/index.htm). I'm just too lazy to help you, that's why.

You just contradicted yourself. NWA was one of the first, and one of the most hardcore, gangsta rap acts.

Simply because its one of the darkest, most political and most angry albums ever released by a band with a modicum of talent. However I prefer Generation Terrorists.

Rap is mainly materialistic and capitalistic. How can you even deem its the only way forward.
Two things: You are listening to the wrong hip hop. And two, so what if it was? I see no problem with that being the case. Here's a tip: don't look for every album to change your life, listen to the music for the music. But look at it from the rappers perspective, when you come from nothing you like to live like you have something. Percentage wise most will never be famous of have lots of money or kill someone but they like to live it in their music.
Rap from its first day has been materialistic, it's nothing new.
Gnagsta raps pretty shit. Raps meant to be about rebellion. Stuff like public enemy and nwa is good.
Ehh...like it was said...NWA IS gangsta rap.
How is Tupac not capitalistic?
What's funny is that his mother was a Black Panther. And then he is involved in one of the most publicized african-american splintering fued of pop culture.
What is the point? Panthers fought other black groups in Oakland and other parts of California for the use of the name Black Panthers and were also rivals of the United Slaves organization and then later battled within themselves.
If anything, he was following their lead.

OMG, The Eels!!! :o I haven't heard anything of theirs in years. I used to really like them, but couldn't buy albums and stuff then... Then they kinda drifted away. *runs to download*
My list of albums to get hold of:
Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation - The Mighty Rearranger
SOAD- Mesmerize
and the new Rammstein album due out later this year; basically Reise Reise 2
Some Asian Dub Foundation
Other albums I'd definitely recommend getting a hold of:
Muse- Origin of Symmetry and Showbiz. OoS is one of those albums that doesn't feel like it's made up of individual songs, you just play it from start to finish.
Rammstein- Sehnsucht!!! My favourite album at the moment.
As people have said, Radiohead.
Mezzanine by Massive Attack or anything by Tricky if you're into good electronic music.
And for the rappers, just to show I love all genres... Black Sunday by Cypress Hill
If you like hardcore:
Epics in Minutes by Fucked Up
40 oz. of Hardcore by No Redeeming Social Value

I would highly recommend downloading Tool's album Lateralus.
