Hey folks, I've been listening to Ani Difranco quite a lot lately and was wondering if anyone here likes her. To those who don't know, she's a folk/rock singer/song writer who was sick of the big labels so set up her own recording/publishing company when she was like 18. She constantly seems to experiment with new styles and sounds and I personally love her "Dilate" album. To those interested I strongly recommend the following:

Untouchable Face
Superhero
Napoleon
Outta Me, Onto You
Amazing Grace

It's no good it's gimmicky militant strong brash woman generic rubbish

Ani DiFranco
Diana Ahnaid
Tracy Bonham

the whole lot of it I was stupid enough to once buy into Ani DiFranco but it's just tokenistic badly written shit really from suburban middle class white women who need to be angsty commercially to move units. It's boring and I hate it with a passion it says nothing of true emotion and is just the emotions of Good Charlotte and rubbish pop punk with better slightly better writers. It's juvenile, derivative, boring and self obsessed/self pitying.

Fuck this style of music so hard I've met so many women who are exactly like Ani DiFranco only with more guts and they all wind up being one dimensional fuckwits that make the same shit music. I really hate these people and the music. Hate, hate, HaTe, fuCKING HATE!

So, you're saying its a bad thing to be a female folk artist? I don't see why you think she's so militant. Admittedly Untouchable Face is a little but to be honest its infinately better than the self pitying shit most people play. What would you rather her sound like?

The Good Charlotte comparison is particularly disturbing, for one thing GC are sexist stupid unoriginal rip offs of real bands. Ani DiFranco is not totally derivative.

To be honest, I know in the end its your opinion but I think you're being a bit too cynical and taking things too far.

I really enjoy the "Knuckle Down" album, as it has great variety in the songs, and is generally very likable. It may be a pit biographical at times, but I dont think its all that much "self-pity" in that part.

Well, I know this probably isn't a very popular opinion, but...

I sincerely hope somebody out there has the decency to rape the shit out of Ani DiFranco one of these days.

Seriously.

If that's the case, I don't think is the right forum for you at all. ;)

It's good to know that thought policing on Che Lives has gotten even more sophisticated with this warning system.

Look, guys.

I heard through the grapevine that there's talk in the Commie Club about getting me banned.

Now, this would make me very sad, because I have been a member here for so long.

So, I would just like to clarrify something here.

When I used the word "rape", what I meant was "make love to".

So, let's do this over again...

I sincerely hope somebody out there has the decency to buy flowers and make love to Ani DiFranco one of these days.

To be honest I don't agree with Floyd's ideas and wish he wouldn't judge all Ani DiFranco fans as "emotional retards with no taste" even if he hardly knows them but at least he was just passing on his opinion rather than promoting an illegal act which some view as bad as murder!

Anyways, its always good to be open minded when you listen to music, so I suggest anyone who hasn't heard her takes a listen, whether they like it or not they'll have decided it and not had me/floyd decide it for them.

Look back on track ****s MDP retracted what he said that should end this. He has changed his words/behaviour, done. It's over.

Back on track, back on track she makes mediocre music that masquerades as having serious meaning when it's just whiney crap.

Alright, I have seperated the Ani DiFranco, The "Rape" Tangent (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?act=ST&f=71&t=38373&st=0#entry1291908329) from this thread, as to not ruin it.

So please post the tangent issue related statements there.

Thank you, it is much appreciated. Anyways, back on topic. Floyd, could you quote some lyrics that make you think she's so militant?

I'm not a mad fan but she's done some good stuff.

Oh fuck me dead lyrics aren't important it's attitude and performance that deliver intent the strongest.

I was once a gullible dickhead who really got into Ani DiFanco and the above female artists I mentioned. Basically it doesn't last the test of time it gets boring and shows that it's weaknesses and shortcomings. I'm allowed not to like it I'm not just blindly writing it off I'm speaking as an ex fan who moved on. Also I didn't tell anybody else what to think I merely stated my own opinions on the subject and all the legions of imposters/equals I've come across who have the exact same derivative mediocre schtick but stronger than her. I suppose I've been swamped in it really and just gotten sick of it and when exposed to the same kind of women but in some cases with more grit than Ani I started to see the mediocrity and that's what I despise.

What really offends me is that most of them and Ani for the most part are just little girls who fabricate problems to protest about when really they have seen fucking nothing in terms of pain compared to myself and select others I know and it's the bullshit and the self pitying nature of it when nothing is really there which offends me so much. It's mostly petty and it annoys the fuck out of me.

I stand my ground on this.

To be honest what I've heard of Ani DiFranco is anything but self pitying, I never said I was saying you were trying to control people's opinions, but I just wanted him to know he should always try them himself, no matter what the circumstance. Furthermore she doesn't seem to ***** about many particularly over the top problems. In fact on the Dilate album she doesn't seem to be *****ing much at all, I guess Superhero is a little but apart from that, y'know. Either way, its my opinion and maybe I'll grow out of her, maybe I won't. Either way it all comes down to taste, and please don't judge me from the fact I like something you don't.

I've been listening to ani since i was about 15 or 16, im now going on 26, and i think shes a brilliant artist. I give her a lot of props for going out on her own, starting her own record label when many labels where fighting to have her sign with them, and then getting other great folk bands and singers on board. She also puts on a good show and is a funny woman. I've seen her many of times and have never been bored (which only happened once- i was put to sleep by lou reed at one of his concerts) and walked out wishing i could see more. And she doesnt write for the sake of selling. A lot of the shit she says is honest and can be related to by a lot of people, not all, but a lot, especially womyn. However, i must admit, i definitely like her old stuff (Puddle dive, to the teeth for example) a lot better, but i continue being a big fan.

if you like ani check out laura nyro, joan baez, joni mitchell, indigo girls.
