View Full Version : Debate went like this

I was debating with a Cappie, and when the aspect of equal wages came up the convo went somthing like this

Me - "Doctors and Garbage Men should be paid because they are essentially providing the same service, and the only difference between a Doctor and a Garbage Man is that the Doctor came from a richer backround. The Garbage Man has probably even worked harder throughout his life while the Doctor paid his way through. And with more then 60% of people's reason for dropping out of college being "lack of financial aid", it is easy to see why Capitalism simply ignores the poor so the rich can get richer with less work."

Cappie - "Yes, but most of the poor people don't work to their potential, and that is why they shouldn't be paid the same, and why they aren't rich."

Me - "That is just an assumption, and entirely not factial"

And then he hung up the phone.

Who won?

Well, if he hung up the phone, either you managed to counter him completely and you won, or he knew something far more and just got bored.

I think you won. He gave up, retreated.

He's a good freind, and I just wish people were more open minded, like even if I wasn't trying to persuade them, I want to find a Cappie who I can at least have a nice, calm conversation with. I beleive I could learn a few things, and am willing to talk to one. Boo on close minded bastages!

Cappie - "Yes, but most of the poor people don't work to their potential, and that is why they shouldn't be paid the same, and why they aren't rich."

The obvious retort to this one is that under capatalism you can't have everyone working to be rich 'cos if there would then be no one willing to do the shitty jobs. By definition one can only be rich at the expense of someone else, an employer cannot be an employer if he has no employees because everybody was worked there way up to employer level. Similarly it implies this idea of everyone being 'upwardly mobile' implies that it is a never ending level, so theoretically everyone in society could rise to the level where they no longer wish to work. Then what would happen to society?

Because while we live in a capitalist society we have to conform to their ways (to a certain extent) to make sure the working class have some money at least. Until capitalism is overthrown we must continue like this.

Sorry Gust I think that question was aimed at you. Oh well, I saved you the job of answering!

The most important thing to know,
when countering Capitalists and arguing with them,
is to keep a "cool"-attitude (Do not overdo this!)
Just like the Sith and Seperatist-leader, Count Dooku
does in Star Wars. While they may be infurious...you
will stay level-headed and patient. I know I have made
the mistake often to be the "aggressor" often, it's hard :D

Thanks for the tip! It's always fun to see the person you are talking with get frustrated while you sit back and discuss with a level head.
