The institution of the police force is a tool of the current state to keep the proletariat under control. They are the ones who arrest and break strikes, they are the ones who crush demonstartions. Going on that cops are just doing their job is pointless because each cop cannot be looked at individually the institution must be looked at as a whole. the cop won't be thinking about you as an individual when he will be spraying you with rubber bullets and the water cannon(if they are lenient enough to do so).

yes, maybe they are tools of state opression, but surely arresting murderers, preventing violent crime etc is needed?

I think this video clip is looking at the police with a view towards their use as a political tool. And, in this sense their role is seen as reprehensible since the liberal politicians claim we live in a 'free' and 'democratic' society and so forth. As Marxists we can see that our society is not 'free' or 'democratic at all, we live under the duress of a particular ideology which will use every means available to perpetuate itself and permeate itself through every facet and extension of our society.

I agree that the police perform an invaluable role in preventing crime and bringing justice. However, there are other means to prevent crime that are often ignored in capitalist society.

^ It can go either way. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Same with Police. They can be used as a tool of opression or as a tool of regularity and keeping the peace. It wouldn't be fair to shove all the blame off on the Police, no matter how much scenes of protestors being pepper sprayed pisses you off. I know, it pisses me off too, but this does not mean all Polizei are like that.
