In order of what's best for your wallet and ears:

1. Ask your local libraries and schools as some still retain records from before CD's if they haven't been thrown out yet then chances are you can snap them up for free.
2. Thrift stores but you have to scour them all the time and lots of them.
3. Car boot sales if you have them in your area
4. Garage Sales
5. Second-hand music stores

Tapes are cooler though for punk, grunge, folk and blues if you like that scratchy quality.

I don't have a vinyl collection per se, however, a couple of years back I picked up an original Dark Side of the Moon complete with all it's stickers, posters etc. from a charity shop, which I'm quite proud of...

Getting back on topic, however, try the bigger markets. There's a market near me that has, or at least used to have, a stall selling exclusivly collectable vinyl...

My vinyl weighs a ton. Vibes scribes and dusty 45's.

I have about 80 LPs

depending on where you live, there are music stores that sell vinyls.
even in a fucking shitty town like Pensacola, FL there are plenty of places to get them.
ask your friends or just go around looking.

shouldnt be hard to find
used music stores tend to have some of their best stuff in vinyl... but its so much less practical...

tapes rock too
very under rated
i dont care what the fuck you say, tapes are more resistant than anything else

I have just accuired a record player today so I will be listening to my small collection, starting with the CRASS reprint I received earlier this week.

My collection mainly consists of old classical music records, some 50-60s rock, and the prides of my collection thus far: the original Pink FLoyd's The Wall and the CRASS Feeding of the 5,000 reprint.

One of the great things about vinyl is that it isn't portable. It is more suited for listening, REALLY listening to music, as well as absorbing the entire record, the artwork, liner notes lyrics etc. You just don't get that same experience with tapes/CDs. And only people who really enjoy listening to music understand this.

Here here. If a tape snaps you just tape it back together. If the case breaks you re-spool it into another. Tapes are perfect for listening and besides we shouldn't have skip functions; good albums are made as a journey!

My town no longer has a record shop that sells vinyl. The last one (Alan Fearnley's) shut last December. The shop had been open for 42 years and is sadly missed. :(

Theres probably somewhere else that you dont know about
and there are always thrift shops... but they tend to have a lot of stuff in poor condition and little good music... in my experience at aleast.

CDs are more practical anyway...
I have a 51-CD changer where I dont have to flip the disc every 5 songs or so and change out every record. I end up listeing to records much less than CDs... sadly.

tapes are unfortunately not as easy to find as LPs and CDs.
