Watchtower: "It's a little girl. She's running defensively eastward."
Operations Room: "Are we talking about a girl under the age of 10?"
Watchtower: "A girl of about 10, she's behind the embankment, scared to death."
Nevertheless, Israeli soldiers begin shooting at the girl at a range of about 100 meters. She is shot in the leg and falls down, wounded.
The watchtower: "I think that one of the positions took her out."
Captain R: "I and another soldier ... are going in a little nearer, forward, to confirm the kill ... Receive a situation report. We fired and killed her ... I also confirmed the kill. Over."
According to the soldiers who saw what happened, Captain R. approached the girl who lay on the ground, moving. He fired two bullets into her, began to walk away, then turned, and emptied his magazine into her head and body.
Captain R. (after killing the girl): "This is commander. Anything that's mobile, that moves in the zone, even if it's a three-year-old, needs to be killed. Over."
This is a transcript of a tape recording articulating a conversation between Israeli soldiers. A 13-year-old Palestinian girl named Iman was killed by a soldier on her way to school in Gaza (she was wearing her uniform). An autopsy found seventeen bullets in the girl's body , the soldier having emptied his magazine into her body to "confirm the kill."
After an official Israeli army investigation whitewashed the incident and concluded that Captain R. had "acted ethically," a few soldiers leaked the story of the incident to Israeli newspaper Yediot Aronoth. The tape of the radio exchanges, which played on Israeli TV, created a public outcry and forced the authorities to take more formal action. As a result, Captain R. was held shortly on five relatively minor charges including the unauthorized use of his weapon and "conduct unbecoming an officer." In Febuary 2005, he was FREED, given his weapon back, and returned to his division.
According to the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz (Dec. 13), Israeli Knesset Member, Ayoub Kara, said that Captain R. should be cleared of any charges and given a medal for his bravery in shooting Iman, to whom he referred to as "terrorist."
