I wonder how many people on this forum like Slipknot. I am sure many people would use the phrase 'nu-metal' pejoratively to describe them. I do not like a great deal of artists in this genre but I like all three of Slipknot's albums. Who else likes Slipknot, and if they do, what is their favourite Slipknot album? My favourite Slipknot album is Iowa (although their first album comes very close to being as good as Iowa).

I love Slipknot!
I think that loads of their stuff is shit, but man, some of their stuff you just have to go mad to!
I don't think that they are really nu-metal (volume 3 certainly isn't).
Personally I prefer Slipknot (volume 1), because of tracks like (sic), eyeless, surfacing. I'm not that keen on Iowa, but I do like People=shit and the heretic anthem, an volume 3 is very good - especially duality and the virus of life.

No! Even though all they do is cut & paste riffs over synthesized layers and have just nine members all with horrid musicianship and even though their lyrics are about as bland as is humanly possible... that doesn't mean they insult the art of music.

Your description of their music is plainly not true. Yes, they do use synthesizers. Many artists use synthesizers and they have been used in music for a long time. I should imagine some of the music you listen to uses synethesized sounds. Why is the 'cut & paste' of riffs a cause for concern? And, they are certianly not poor musicians, I have heard people say that they have one of the best drummers around. And, with all the band members they have they can create a much more unique and intense sound than many other metal bands. The songs they construct show that they are very talented, as mentioned songs like 'people = shit' are nothing less than perfect examples of how to create an involving, emotive and highly competent piece of music.

Slipknots music just makes me want to jump around like mad! It's good to mosh to because some of it is hard-core. Joey Jordison is a very talented man. He is the drummer of the band and also plays with the "Murder Dolls". Currently he is the best drummer in the world 5 years running. :D

I listen to a lot of synthesized stuff. But the difference is that they don't add layers to just add bland textures. Slipknot has the tendency to just add generic textures and that "megaphone" yelling technique in many songs. Not very inventive at all.

And, they are certianly not poor musicians, I have heard people say that they have one of the best drummers around. And, with all the band members they have they can create a much more unique and intense sound than many other metal bands.

Oh... well I'm sorry that I think when you have one member just banging on a trashcan the whole song, that I don't find it that astounding.

As for being as intense and unique as many other metal bands... you probably don't listen to much other metal music. Because there are plenty of bands that have the exact same style as Slipknot. Nu-metal is exactly the right phrase.

And as for this "intensity" that you claim is there, you need to listen to Grindcore, Death Metal, Black Metal, or Stoner Metal. THAT is intensity.

Slipknot

1 (Joey Jordison) drums
2 (Paul Gray) bass
3 (Chris Fehn) percussion
4 (Jim Root) guitar
5 (Craig Jones) samples
6 (Shawn Crahan) percussion
7 (Mick Thompson) guitar
8 (Corey Taylor) vocals
0 (Sid Wilson) DJ

FACTS

On stage, they wear bizarre masks and orange jumpsuits.

The band members are known by number, or by the type of mask they wear.

Their stage shows are extremely violent. It is common for them to break ribs from throwing their bodies around on stage.

Slipknot fans are known as "maggots," which is meant as a term of endearment.
They're from Des Moines, Iowa. Jordison and Crahan formed the band.
Taylor used to work the overnight shift at a sex shop.

Their first album, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat, released in 1996, is very hard to find because not many copies were made.

Not a lot happens in Des Moines, so it was big news in 1982 when Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat at a concert there. Jordison was 6 at the time, but immediately idolized Ozzy when he heard the story.

Jordison still lives with his parents, although he's not home much.
Crahan used to carry a dead bird with him so he could vomit on stage.
Taylor and Root are also in the band Stone Sour.

Sid is also known as DJ Starscream, and he makes some of his own techno music.

Sorry, but he clearly is not the best drummer in the world. By far the best drummers don't even play rock, they usually play Jazz, or even classical percussionists, who have huge kits and incredibly complex material to play.

Hell he's not even the best drummer in rock music, I can think of plenty of better drummers, Danny Carey, Keith Moon, Mike Portnoy, Stewart Copeland, Matt Cameron, Neil Peart and Sean Moore is a very accomplished drummer, just to name a few off the top of my head.

Danny carey (just look at the mans kit) is, by far, the best drummer in modern rock with Mike Portnoy coming in second.

Replying to Clarksist.

I can't relate to your discussion of synthesized sound since I don't have much of a knowledge of it.

As for being as intense and unique as many other metal bands... you probably don't listen to much other metal music. Because there are plenty of bands that have the exact same style as Slipknot. Nu-metal is exactly the right phrase.

Using your logic one could conclude that no artist produces a unique sound as long as they exist in a music genre poplated by more than one artist. I do listen to some other 'nu-metal', and although it may be of the same style Slipknot are one of the better 'nu-metal' artists. In fact, as I said in a my first post in this thread I do not listen to a lot of other 'nu-metal' artists. By the way, are you implying that you dislike 'nu-metal' in general since you seem to use 'nu-metal' in a pejorative sense. You also seem to imply that I said 'nu-metal' should not be used to describe Slipknot, but what I said was that many people might use 'nu-metal' perjoratively to describe the genre they exist in. In effect, I was suggesting that many people on the forum might not like 'nu-metal' in general.

And as for this "intensity" that you claim is there, you need to listen to Grindcore, Death Metal, Black Metal, or Stoner Metal. THAT is intensity.

I have experienced these sounds to on a few occasions but I am not particularly familiar with them so I could not comment. I am sure many artists from this genre do produce an intense and involving brand of music. However, I would not concede that Slipknot do not based on my experience of music in general.

I think we need a drummers pesspective here (i.e me).

Yes Jordison is good, very good infact but haveing a fast kick dosn't mean your the best in the world. I would regard Danny Carey as the best rock drummer at the moment, he has an amazing ability to play the most wicked off beats and come up with some mad grooves. Some other great drummers (in rock) I think are better than Jordison are John Bonham (led zep), Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix) and well basicly the list Enigma had before (yeah Moon and Camron, I love those guys). As for jazz drumming, it's amazing, I don't know if you have ever heard of a guy called Buddy Rich but he is awsome and is regarded as the best drummer ever. Jazz differnaly has the bast drummers and alot of the top rock drummers (mainly in punk) have jazz training.

Final Verdict: Slipknot are good (not that I lisien to much) but there not at the top (time to get out the tool and led zep I think).

rockfan, I'm sorry but I think your missing two very important drummers. Phil Collins, from Genisis, was regarded as the best drummer in the world a while ago. He still is a good drummer, although he dosen't do much anymore. Mick Fleetwood, from Fleetwood Mac, he was an extraordinary drummer. His music while he was drumming was really good. Fleetwood Mac were good although they have disbanded.

I think virtually all people that create music for a living could not make that living if they just made noise with little or no musical quality to it. Although, in that respect the frog ringtone that came out as a single in the U.K. comes close to being an example of otherwise.

Well, a quick search for all your posts in the "music" forum reveals that you like shitty music like ©rap and nu metal, so it is definately because you have no idea about music and listen to crappy shit, maybe because it's "cool" or because it's the only thing which sounds "ok" for you from the genres that have been forced into most youth by the corporations or maybe it is because you still haven't grown up which is very likely.

I am 19 and I would consider myself to be 'grown up'. I am certainly not a moron or a goth. So, why do I like Slipknot?
Well, a quick search for all your posts in the "music" forum reveals that you like shitty music like ©rap and nu metal, so it is definately because you have no idea about music and listen to crappy shit, maybe because it's "cool" or because it's the only thing which sounds "ok" for you from the genres that have been forced into most youth by the corporations or maybe it is because you still haven't grown up which is very likely. [/b]
Only about five posts come up (I think because I changed my user name very recently), which show I like Immortal Technique, Slipknot and 50 Cent.

However, this is not representative of my music tastes. Looking at some of my CDs, this is more representative of my music tastes (is this, in your judgement, all 'crap' and corporate):

Smashing Pumpkins
Gram Parsons
Insane Clown Posse
Emmylou Harris
Desert Rose Band
Bjork
Lauryn Hill
1208
Anti-Flag
Bad Religion
Rilo Kiley
Death By Stereo
Audioslave
Soil
International Noise Conspiracy
The Offspring
The Distillers
Evanescence
Eminem
Korn
Dead Prez
Esham

I am conscious of the nature of the music I listen to and the roots of much of that music in capitalist consumer-based culture. Nearly all artists that I listen to would be executed in the kind of society I want to live in. And, 50 Cent would be near the top of the list of those whose lives must be ended in the interests of public safety.

But if you think that flamming on leftist website is a productive use of your own time, then you are in no position to comment.

Shut the fuck up, pigboy.

You are a fucking idiot.

Yes, most of those bands are corporate garbage. Anyone that likes ICP and Slipknot sucks at life.

I cannot relate to what you are saying. Why would someone 'suck at life' if they like ICP of Slipknot. And, do you mean to say you like nothing that could be called a product of corporate culture?

I would agree that virtually all films produced by such a culture are trash, but I do not think that it is becoming to show hostility towards other communists who appreciate such films. Such phrases as 'suck at life' are typical of those most infected by American corporate culture. How one might 'suck' at life is highly subjective. My opinion of what constitutes one sucking at life is a person that is enamored with the incliniation to show hostility towards others without provocation.

I fucking hate Slipknot.

Pantera, Slipknot, and Nirvana are the three single shittiest bands ever.

Completely unoriginal and annoying, Slipknot is the pinnacle of "Nu-Metal".
There's one thing that I've learned about music. Never take the opinions of anyone who's pathetic enough to go to a rave seriously.

It has nothing to do with you as a communist. You're not just a communist you know. You're also a person. And I didn't show any hostility towards your communist views, so don't play that card. And your literal interpretation of my insult is laughable. Your taste in music sucks. You suck at life. Normally I respect people's opinions, but people that are so stupid as to like Slipknot and ICP don't deserve my respect.

I like how their music sounds as someone slamming their face to the strings of an electric guitar. I bet its some kind of avant-garde music.

Also, their masks are the pinnacles of creativity and art.

Does who don't like Slipknot don't have taste.

So now a completely different Genre of music influences my ability to rate other Genres?

That is the sound of someone who cant come up with a better response :)
