As we slide down the back slope of the end of the Age of Oil, we will,
of necessity, withdraw from the mythical "Global Economy," even from the
national economy, returning to local production for local consumption, with
limited regional trading for needed materials. We will live within the
biological and geophysical limitations of our local areas, limiting our
population to that which can be sustained locally.
This is called Bioregionalism, Living in Place, Reinhabitory Strategies:
the means by which we live our lives in harmony with local conditions. A
thousand years from now, humans will be living bioregionally, or not at all.
The form of human social organization most suited to living
bioregionally is anarchism. Anarchy, like the bioregion we live within, is
decentralized, non-hierarchical, cooperative, consensus-based. Anarchy is
the only form of social organization that mirrors social relationships among
non-human species. Anarchism arises of itself from the non-coercive
interrelationships among free, unfettered human beings.
