View Full Version : Why do so many on this board dislike punk?

Is it the Apathy, because thats mostly only in a certain type of the music, or is it the fact that the artists still get paid, because in my opinion music is a great way to get a message across, and bands can hype up a crowd, and people will rebel, such as Rage did in Mexico, the kids threw rocks at police and the such, even before they played!

A lot of people on this board like punk, note all the "Punk" threads that have been made. Personally I hate rap/hip hop, in my eyes it is not music. Punk/Rock/Heavy all requires a lot more skill than rap/hip hop. But as I say this, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I don't like old-school punk vocals or lyrics but their work with instruments and left-social movement (as opposed to the punk right-social movement) I do respect.

Old-School Punk is the real stuff, Ramones/Sex Pistols/Clash they are all the real Punk bands. (as well as other bands, don't get me wrong). Don't tell me your one of those "Blink 182" or "Good Charlotte" loving people. That is not real Punk it's what I like to call "Baby Punk" or "Bubblegum Punk" (pretty pathetic names, why not laugh at them)

conflict and crass are also amazing old school punk bands

Most people on this board actually seem to like punk, as shown by our weekly Clash thread.

What do I think? Well, let's say that most of this bands are untalented angry teenage posers.

I can live with the "early" punk bands (those who pioneered the genre in the 70s and mixed it with other genres), especially The Clash.

seeing as the latter two were formed to make money and be the "new" thing, i wouldnt use them as examples of great punk bands. if you want leftist punk bands check out conflict, crass, aus rotten, a//political, anti-product, resist//exist, and ask me if you want more

I definitely consider the anti-coporate punk attitude is a prerequisite to being called a punk band - the whole reason it was started was because of the tyrrany of the record labels. Therefore, a punk band on a major label is an oxymoron.

I love my punk but only really the early roots, 80's DC Hardcore and Hardcore. I hate commercial tokenistic jock punk like Guttermouth and NOFX.

I used to like punk a lot, but to be honest I got bored of it. I haven't really listened to it for years, sinse I was about 15/16.

Why is there such an emphasis on bashing peoples taste in music?
Have you considered that not everybody likes the same music as you?

I like old-punk rock, new-punk rock, trip hop, nü metal, funk metal, and many different styles. I don't go around shouting that I don't like rap or most hip hop because some people do like it.

It's free speech mate. You have the right to say you love something and I have the right to say I hate it.

What a horrible, horrible shitty thread.

I wish people would limit their comments to things they have a clue about.

And Nate, please explain how the Clash was formed to cash in on the new punk trend. That is absolutely untrue, I'd love for you to back it up.

Oh, and reccomending bands like Crass and Conflict (contrary to popular opinion) does not make your leftism any more legitimate. I enjoy the ideas and intentions of these bands, but I prefer music to sound good. Bands like Crass were never intended to make quality music, and they never did.

yes i agree with your view on crass even though i like them, their music is terrible. but yes, i read an interview about the clash in a guitar world magazine and some manager told one of the members to get some friends together and make a band because punk is gonna get big. if you absolutely want it i can type up that part of the article.

Don't like most punk, most punk is just screamy with no musical skills going about nothing. These recent mtv bands carry the torch. Good Charlotte is probaly one of the worst attempts at a "punk" band, it's just pop. Blink 182 is terrible, just terrible. However speaking on "pop-punk" bands. We went shopping for fruit and clothes and stuff today and I couldn't find any good cd's. The only that I found was an old one which I used to listen to as a 14 year old, it had some tracks of The Offspring - and I have to say though, it isn't that bad.

But Dead Kennedys and Boikot is some good shit.

yea most punk isn't good musiclly, but I have other music to listen to that is good musiclly, like Zepplin, Floyd, and the such, I like punk because you can experiment there are many differnet kinds, and msot of its just fast and I like the lyrics to alot of it, as for Crass, I like the lyrics(most of the time, sometimes they are contridictory) but if i listen to them on a cd for too long I get a headache

Although early punk like The Clash & The Ramones are obviously better why do you all deride new, pop punk/rock? They make good music, something the uber-independent punk bands off today forgot has to be done instead of sneering at every thing on MTV.
BTW, if you people think your musical tastes aren't formed by what you see on TV, why do you all dislike rap? It's because you see the shite 50 Cent/ Fat Joe rap on MTV and don't discover whats beneath the surface. Rap at the moment is generating more revolutionary individuals and groups (Immortal Techniq, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli) than punk or rock is.

I like punk very much.Dead Kennedys, the Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, and other bands are great, however I think that the ones I named are punk rock..I like punk because their lyrics have a political message(most of em), and with the combination of the screamy vocals, it gives you the possibility to scream against the system, you feel great, even if the music is not that melodic.

good point. punk has gone soft. it's not about fighting the system or getting pissed,or even just creating general mayhem. it's now about fashion and 'love' songs......thank you blink 182......admittedly the clash were never the most 'hardcore' (god i hate that word)but at least they were clever with their lyrics unlike some bands nowadays.....blink 182 you did it again.

What the fuck? Ramones, ramones, ramones. Do you people know that the Ramones were right wing? Joey ramone said in an interview "lots of people become liberals when they're young, if I can lead them away from that with music, then that's a good thing".

Nate take it easy on the Clash critisicsm. Yes, they were on CBS, yea that's bullshit. But that was before the DIY ethic was really established in punk. DIY didn't really exist at the point when they signed.

CRASS was mostly inspired, artisticly, I would think by the DaDaists. Just look at their album covers, for god sake!

But, the reason why punk sounds kinda bad is because of the idea that ANYONE can do it. Anyone can be in a band, anyone can form a band, anyone can play the instruments, etc. Music isn't just something to be enjoyed and played by a select few people.

I think you many of you guys take punk way to seriously. Musically it is generally untechnical, always has been and still is today, at least compared to most stuff out there. So this good/bad shit is just bad mouthing people's tastes in a non-productive way.

As for blink and various other new punk bands, well I do see them as something different (to what most term as punk), but punk music has been mainstream (or pop ular) for many years now. So what if they have slightly less feedback and more melody? The record labels....fuck that one, people that listen to many of these bands aren't that interested in have politics screamed at them, but catchy (if quite cheesy) riffs and songs about fucking dogs I can deal with.

If it sounds good fuck it, and although I am pro-boycott, I still listen to Eric Clapton to name but one of the many right wingers out there.

Rap music isn't bad. It isn't quite to my tastes, but I think musicians out there could learn by actually trying to freestyle. Me and another (now ex) band member reguarly freestyle. Either a guitar is used, or really shit human beatboxes (everyone gets involved) and we just take the piss for 5-10 minutes at a time, once you can do it there is no better entertainment for stoned teenagers.

All music has a place, and if you want to say things are good/bad in terms of difficulty then punk loses out. If it is terms of record label/political leanings then many fantastic musicians are discarded. If you appreciate everything for what it is, and then choose what you prefer (for whatever reason, even just sounding cool) then I think you get a far better and fairer picture of the music out there.

Everyone is entitled to an oppinion, but "this is shit" is just an unsupported assertion. Anyone thinks something is shit, try doing it yourself first.

There is quite a bit of good punk still around, you just have to look for it. Bands like Oxymoron, Dropkick Murphys, The Business, Sham 69, Agnostic Front, all have somewhat left-wing views, and do a good job of potraying(sp?) them.

How did flogging molly get in that list, ugh!!!! Try the Pogues, Shane MacGowan or Blood or Whiskey for a better taste of that genre.

As for people on this board liking or not liking punk, there seems to be a fair amount who do like punk but perhaps not exclusively. Hell even Victor aka redzep has come around, he just had to be exposed to some good punk as opposed to whatever mtv and commercial radio are pushing.

Oh and as for Crass, put on the record or cd, turn your stereo all the way down and read the lyrics, the experience will be far more enjoyable.

the casualties, the unseen, C.AARME, new bomb turks, 98 mute, bombshell rocks, U.S Bombs, swingin utters, corrosion of conformity, F-minus, didjits, down by law, clit 45 etc etc
