View Full Version : Rejected!

I'm part of a local group of artists in my city and we're having a show the 4th of July and I submitted 5 pieces, three paintings and two collages. One collage was rejected because it wasn't "with" the spirit of the group.

Basically, the collage was pages from a bible pasted on a canvas board with the words "fucking lies" painted on with stencils. They rejected it because it was outsider art and they didn't want anything like that, since it was attacking the church and what not. If I can get a hold of a camera, I'll snap a pic and put it up here.

I have a feeling I'm going to get rejected a lot.

Way to be blunt with your art man.

And yeah, you will get rejected, but at least you didn't sell out.

Sorry to be blunt about this but,

Art is supposed to transcend the poverty of human language, not make it more decrepit. Art is supposed to enable incursions into the realm of truth which language cannot adequately or as succintly handle.

What you did was 'art' if taking the bible or any other book and vomitting on it can also be called 'art'. It is just another form of an 'insult'. Nothing 'Artistic' about a visual presentation smudged with insults, just as there is nothing 'Intelligent' about a vocal outburst containing nothing but vulgarities. Your attitude seems to be on the right track, but the expressional medium could do with some tweaking. Don't be disheartened though. The above was what i told myself years ago when i was as 'expressive' as yourself. Artistic capabilities evolve gradually with our own personal evolution. Get the second part right, and the first follows.

I'm afraid there is some truth in what "the man" says. That really does not strike me as being terribly intellengent.

EDIT: OK Floyd has just put my thoughts forward much more clearly. Pay no attetion to my crapness :D

Trying to say what art is is just like trying to define the purpose of life.

I'd disagree with that. I'd personally say art is intent perception, universal aesthetic and personal aesthetic. If somebody creates something they honestly believe to be a piece of art and they intended it that way then it is art it may not be good art but it is art. Also if somebody were to look at something like say a doorknob and to decide it is art (let's assume they've never seen a doorknob before) then through perception it becomes art to them. The universal aesthetic is along the lines of I could hold a coin up to anyone in the world and ask what shape it is and they'd all say round. There is a basic understanding that humanity shares with how we comprehend things on a really basic level and some art seems to function on that level other art can be more niche/complex and only functions on a personal level. But basically art is easy to define.

I think the piece that got rejected doesn't have a strong impact just because of it's composition and bluntness of point on first look it reveals itself and there is no more to it which makes it kind of a one trick pony. It's more idea based than it is basic aesthetic visual appeal based there isn't really any shock and impact you just take it as a given which is perhaps why it was rejected. If a longer point were wanting to be made then I think it would of functioned better as a poem or short piece of verse. Either that or imply more in the work make the bible pages mold, rot and fall apart, damage them and rely on your idea and intent revealing itself rahter than having to resort to obvious text and to take the sublety out of it.

Perhaps selectively choose the pages of hte bible and events that offend you and highlight reasons why you aren't religious. If you had it out of glass and the pages peeling with the ideas killing themselves or something then on the reverse of the pages you could even have comment on what the other side says, doodlings or even examples of how these beliefs have been used wrongly like evangelical missionaries and taking native children from families to 'civilize' them. I think you cut it off too short and shot yourself in the foot by making it so blunt and one dimensional to be totally honest though. Realise I'm in no way having a shot at you or your art but only offering suggestions as to why it got rejected and as to how you could possibly widen your view and make the piec more successfull.

Would you like to keep this thread as a personal art thread where you update your own art, to have it combined into the gallery thread or perhaps to keep it as a thread for contentious/rejected work?

Either way unless you want it for the latter purposes I see no reason why this can't go into gallery.
