Obviously use of the word "nigger" is extremely deragatory, especially when used by European-Americans. However, what if a black person wants to use the word, is it still derogatory?

I'm sure a lot of people here have heard Lenny Bruce's ethnic slur routine. The routine included just about every ethnic slur, but after it he offered an extended mediation on how slurs could lose their hateful powers if we stopped cultivating a taboo around their mention. And hence with each repetition of the slurs in Bruce's routine, he was liquidating them of the power they held from the largely artificial stigma that has been erected around them. The point is these artificial stigmas just enhance the hurtful power of slurs, and that sounds true to me. That doesn't mean I'm going to go around calling someone a "faggot" or a "nigger" or refer to women as "*****es." I refuse to say those things not because I'm PC, but because it promotes stupidity.

Well this post came after a black teenager was expelled from school in Denver for calling another black student "my nigga," is it hypocritical of white administrators to tell black youth they can't use the word nigga?

Nigger is supposed to be used by black people to another black people. But if perhaps a white man says that, then it is supposed to be racial. "Niggers" were skaves brought from Nigeria, but are now all black people (out of Africa?).

I don't think we should jsut assume that all African Americans use the word "Nigger" to address each other. There would be many who do not wish to use the word. Through through the Music of Chuck D, this is an example of a black man who does not use the word "nigger".

However, what if a black person wants to use the word, is it still derogatory?

If it is meant in a derogatory manner yes, although it is not as offensive as if a white person was to call them the same name. Reasons for this are numerous such as the same person sharing the same experiences of prejudice as you as opposed to someone who never has, the re-claiming of the word and turning it into a posative but which can still be at times used in a harmful manner.

And not all black people walk around calling each other niggas and talk slang unlike what some people whould have you believe.

Much as gay people have reclaimed words like "Queer" the use of N***** amongst black people has dulled some of it's venom yet I feel it a completley unecessary and vulgar term. Also when white people hear it's frequent usage some may mistakenly feel free to employ it. An example of this is when movie directors like Quentin Tarantino bombard us with it, however contextually used it seems uncomfortable.

A detestable word which should be forgotten.

the more egalitarean you are, the funnier racist and sexist jokes are--why? because you are beyond being insecure and you realise how ridiculous they are. the unabomber's manifesto puts it quite well in the leftist intro section:

10. By "feelings of inferiority" we mean not only inferiority feelings in the strictest sense but a whole spectrum of related traits: low self-esteem, feelings of powerlessness, depressive tendencies, defeatism, guilt, self-hatred, etc. We argue that modern leftists tend to have such feelings (possibly more or less repressed) and that these feelings are decisive in determining the direction of modern leftism.

11. When someone interprets as derogatory almost anything that is said about him (or about groups with whom he identifies) we conclude that he has inferiority feelings or low self-esteem. This tendency is pronounced among minority rights advocates, whether or not they belong to the minority groups whose rights they defend. They are hypersensitive about the words used to designate minorities. The terms "negro," "oriental," "handicapped" or "chick" for an African, an Asian, a disabled person or a woman originally had no derogatory connotation. "Broad" and "chick" were merely the feminine equivalents of "guy," "dude" or "fellow." The negative connotations have been attached to these terms by the activists themselves. Some animal rights advocates have gone so far as to reject the word "pet" and insist on its replacement by "animal companion." Leftist anthropologists go to great lengths to avoid saying anything about primitive peoples that could conceivably be interpreted as negative. They want to replace the word "primitive" by "nonliterate." They seem almost paranoid about anything that might suggest that any primitive culture is inferior to our own. (We do not mean to imply that primitive cultures ARE inferior to ours. We merely point out the hypersensitivity of leftish anthropologists.)

12. Those who are most sensitive about "politically incorrect" terminology are not the average black ghetto-dweller, Asian immigrant, abused woman or disabled person, but a minority of activists, many of whom do not even belong to any "oppressed" group but come from privileged strata of society. Political correctness has its stronghold among university professors, who have secure employment with comfortable salaries, and the majority of whom are heterosexual, white males from middle-class families.

13. Many leftists have an intense identification with the problems of groups that have an image of being weak (women), defeated (American Indians), repellent (homosexuals), or otherwise inferior. The leftists themselves feel that these groups are inferior. They would never admit it to themselves that they have such feelings, but it is precisely because they do see these groups as inferior that they identify with their problems. (We do not suggest that women, Indians, etc., ARE inferior; we are only making a point about leftist psychology).

14. Feminists are desperately anxious to prove that women are as strong as capable as men. Clearly they are nagged by a fear that women may NOT be as strong and as capable as men.

15. Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality. The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist's real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful.

16. Words like "self-confidence," "self-reliance," "initiative", "enterprise," "optimism," etc. play little role in the liberal and leftist vocabulary. The leftist is anti-individualistic, pro-collectivist. He wants society to solve everyone's needs for them, take care of them. He is not the sort of person who has an inner sense of confidence in his own ability to solve his own problems and satisfy his own needs. The leftist is antagonistic to the concept of competition because, deep inside, he feels like a loser.

17. Art forms that appeal to modern leftist intellectuals tend to focus on sordidness, defeat and despair, or else they take an orgiastic tone, throwing off rational control as if there were no hope of accomplishing anything through rational calculation and all that was left was to immerse oneself in the sensations of the moment.

18. Modern leftist philosophers tend to dismiss reason, science, objective reality and to insist that everything is culturally relative. It is true that one can ask serious questions about the foundations of scientific knowledge and about how, if at all, the concept of objective reality can be defined. But it is obvious that modern leftist philosophers are not simply cool-headed logicians systematically analyzing the foundations of knowledge. They are deeply involved emotionally in their attack on truth and reality. They attack these concepts because of their own psychological needs. For one thing, their attack is an outlet for hostility, and, to the extent that it is successful, it satisfies the drive for power. More importantly, the leftist hates science and rationality because they classify certain beliefs as true (i.e., successful, superior) and other beliefs as false (i.e. failed, inferior). The leftist's feelings of inferiority run so deep that he cannot tolerate any classification of some things as successful or superior and other things as failed or inferior. This also underlies the rejection by many leftists of the concept of mental illness and of the utility of IQ tests. Leftists are antagonistic to genetic explanations of human abilities or behavior because such explanations tend to make some persons appear superior or inferior to others. Leftists prefer to give society the credit or blame for an individual's ability or lack of it. Thus if a person is "inferior" it is not his fault, but society's, because he has not been brought up properly.

19. The leftist is not typically the kind of person whose feelings of inferiority make him a braggart, an egotist, a bully, a self-promoter, a ruthless competitor. This kind of person has not wholly lost faith in himself. He has a deficit in his sense of power and self-worth, but he can still conceive of himself as having the capacity to be strong, and his efforts to make himself strong produce his unpleasant behavior. [1] But the leftist is too far gone for that. His feelings of inferiority are so ingrained that he cannot conceive of himself as individually strong and valuable. Hence the collectivism of the leftist. He can feel strong only as a member of a large organization or a mass movement with which he identifies himself.

20. Notice the masochistic tendency of leftist tactics. Leftists protest by lying down in front of vehicles, they intentionally provoke police or racists to abuse them, etc. These tactics may often be effective, but many leftists use them not as a means to an end but because they PREFER masochistic tactics. Self-hatred is a leftist trait.

21. Leftists may claim that their activism is motivated by compassion or by moral principle, and moral principle does play a role for the leftist of the oversocialized type. But compassion and moral principle cannot be the main motives for leftist activism. Hostility is too prominent a component of leftist behavior; so is the drive for power. Moreover, much leftist behavior is not rationally calculated to be of benefit to the people whom the leftists claim to be trying to help. For example, if one believes that affirmative action is good for black people, does it make sense to demand affirmative action in hostile or dogmatic terms? Obviously it would be more productive to take a diplomatic and conciliatory approach that would make at least verbal and symbolic concessions to white people who think that affirmative action discriminates against them. But leftist activists do not take such an approach because it would not satisfy their emotional needs. Helping black people is not their real goal. Instead, race problems serve as an excuse for them to express their own hostility and frustrated need for power. In doing so they actually harm black people, because the activists' hostile attitude toward the white majority tends to intensify race hatred.

22. If our society had no social problems at all, the leftists would have to INVENT problems in order to provide themselves with an excuse for making a fuss.

23. We emphasize that the foregoing does not pretend to be an accurate description of everyone who might be considered a leftist. It is only a rough indication of a general tendency of leftism.

This is not all leftists--but being Politically Correct is a form of mind control. Abolish it.

Nigger is just a derogatory name for a Negro. I think that people should accept others for what they are, if they are black, yellow, religious or socially un-acceptable, we should accpet them as humans. Accept for the capitalists...

According to lexicographers, the ultimate origin of the word "nigger" is in the Latin niger meaning black. This gave rise to many cognate terms are found in the Romance languages (cf. Spanish and Portuguese negro, French noir, Italian nero). English acquired the word from French nègre, which can be seen in earlier English variants, such as negar, neegar, neger, and niggor. "Neger" is a current word in German (where it is today considered a pejorative term), as well as Dutch and Scandinavian languages.

A popular theory for the origin of the word, not regarded as correct by lexicographers, is that nigger came from the Southern U.S. pronunciation of "negro," which yielded phonetic mistranscriptions as nigra. Two 16th-century uses of the term commonly cited in dictionaries are actually taken from scholarly tracts. For much of its history, until the early 20th Century in America, nigger was a colloquial synonym for blacks. The term was a standard one throughout the United States, but particularly commonplace in the slaveholding South. Historically, many whites used the word casually, even dismissively. For most blacks, the term always has been associated with white supremacy, racism, violence and oppression.

The offensiveness of the term has grown over time, especially in the 20th century. A 1700 quote by judge Samuel Sewall uses the term in a denunciation of slavery. Gradually, however, polite discourse increasingly used the term Negro (which dates to at least 1555), and nigger became relegated to the realms of vulgarity, increasing in offensiveness over the centuries. When Mark Twain used the word in Huckleberry Finn, by the standards of his day, it was not particularly offensive (although, even then, it was a term that would not be used in polite society). Rather, the word "nigger" was a marker of the class and socio-economic status of the characters who used it. Author Rudyard Kipling used the word nigger many times, both in character dialogue and elsewhere, where it allegedly does not carry its modern derogatory aspects. Sometimes he spelled it phonetically, as "naygur," when spoken by a character with an Irish accent.

A word is only a word in the space of your mind. If you want it to having bearing on you and let it be so overpowering even though it is only a word, go right ahead, theres nothing right or wrong with saying the word, its just a word. I don't know if any of you have seen the movie Ghost World, but theres a part in it where the main character brings a propaganda picture made by the KKK of a black person I think, to art class and she was all talking about how it is all controversial and all, but if we really want to overcome racism we can't let the picture or the word "nigger"(yes I said it) have any baring or control on us.

Obviously use of the word "nigger" is extremely deragatory, especially when used by European-Americans. However, what if a black person wants to use the word, is it still derogatory?
When an African uses the word nigger OR NIGGA, it is only reflective of the psychological damage that has been done to us as a people. The damage is so deep that (take me for example...)I KNOW the word is wrong and I would never try to justify it, but sometimes, I STILL use the word.

When people of other nationalities use the word nigger OR NIGGA, it is a distorted testimony to the influence of African people (on all cultures of the world). Imitating the art, sciences, philosophies (and etc.) of African people are one thing...but imitating our ignorance? It is IGNORANCE that compels Africans to refer to themselves as niggers OR NIGGAS (a term that has been historically directed at African people)...so for a people other than African people to WILLINGLY refer to THEMSELVES as niggers? OR NIGGAS? The influence can NOT be denied.

And when white people or other people who are not Africans use the word nigger OR NIGGA, it doesn't bother me one bit. Especially when it is being used to degrade me or my people. Many of us have gotten tired of caring (whether other people think we are niggers OR NIGGAS...or whether other people do NOT think we are niggers OR NIGGAS) a LONG time ago. In other words, non-African people's opinion of (or use of) the word nigger OR NIGGA means absolutely nothing to me. You can call me all the niggers or NIGGAS you want to. I don't mind. I'm ONLY concerned with what African people think of those words.

My two cents... I think it's fucking laughable when whites try to criticize black people for using the word. Do you really think the people who say it give a damn what you think?

I think it's fairly obvious that it is an expression of pride...

"You may have taken our land and the fruit of our labor, but we've taken language that used to be yours to dehumanize us, and now, not only are we saying it in good intentions to each other, you can't even say it at all! Ha-ha!"

Not that its usage is necessarily revolutionary, by any means, but it is a reminder of the potency of concentrated cultural struggle.

It is like the word "queer". The idea is embracing the word, rather than trying to deny it. There is nothing wrong with that. However, if someone else uses the word, it is seen as derogatory, and rightly so.

But do you know where I'm coming from. The 'n' word is directly related to the whole "I'm stealing your culture thing" which I think is bullshit cause black culture is the culture of a working class people...same with hip-hop, it has nothing to do with race cause people in brooklyn in marcy projects are facin the same shit as my brothers in the middle east and as some cat in a trailer park. i think its wrong that black people call each other 'nigga' but white people are critised deeply for saying it.

The historical 'baggage' that comes with the word is related to white on black racism, obviously the term is offensive/racist when it is used in that context. black on black usage is detached from the historical 'baggage'- that should be self-evident.

If we're all supposed to be equals etc, then why are these people creatin a word that only they can use, seperating the two races?

First, the term was created by non-African people to describe Africans, not by Africans to describe Africans or other people. Second, europeans people are the ones who created segregation (seperation) in the US, not Africans. As i've already explained the reason why 'only they can use' the term is because in the vast majority of other contexts, such usage would be rightly considered racist.

Although i do not agree with 'reclaiming' racial slurs- as i dont think it is an effective way to combat or 'defuse' racism- it is ultimately up to the targeted group whether or not they wish to use it. The fact that it is not 'ok' for whites or other non-African or black peoples to use the term is not inequality. Since when was using racist slurs a 'right'?

Are you saying that non-African/black peoples should be able to call a member of the former group a 'nigger'?

Wigger.

It is the word used to describe white people who try to act as if they are "brothers" from the "hood". OG's etc.

Is this racism?

Black Dagger
9th July 2005, 14:40
Yes, the term means 'white nigger', it's a poorly disguised use of the term 'nigger'- it also implies that black peoples (termed in this language- 'niggers') act in a certain or certain ways- a racist assumption.

The ¨N¨ word according to Malcom X who researched it´s usage throughly refers to a dirty person. Therefore, although it has been adopted in African American culture as slang, is in an inappropriate way to refer to oneself.

However in rap as in the feminist movement with the use of the word ¨****¨or ¨*****, by adopting and controlling the word, the African American culture as taken the power of the intention behind that word when used by white´s in the rural south in to themselves. In this way, racist whites can no longer hurt them with the word, rather they are co-opting a part of what is now African-American dialect, and therefore ¨Trying to act black, by using it.¨¨

I accept this transformation of power of the word, but although I have Turkish ancestry and have dark uncles and aunts, I am too fair myself to ever think of using the word in any such way. For me it would have racist overtones, because I am not Black! I went through this whole understanding when I was a child living in the projects with African-American friends and family who took care of me as if I were their own while my mother worked all the time. During that time we discussed the word and that due to my skin color I could not use that, although they could use it to refer to each other in a loving manner.

It makes me sick when White kids have a Black friend and think they can get away with such crap, when in reality they go back to their suburban homes at night and have never referred and loved a Black Woman as a Mother or dear Aunt, and depended upon her for protection, advice, and strength for several years of their life.

Do not think you are part of the Black Community if you have never lived in and with the Black Community and relied on it for sustance. And as with many of my friends who were half-black or whose brothers or sisters were so, there are always cultural seperations based on color even then.

But this is not truth for you perhaps, this is my experience. It is truth as I have experienced it.

Now excuse me, I have to get back for Comida from my Mayan mother she has worked hard to prepare it and I have to bring thanks and and carrots to the table.

The real Revolutionary is a Revolutionary of Love! Love makes everything impossible possible. Love is a miracle of life it is the water from which I bathe and drink. Immerse yourself in its loving kindness, and forget your ignorance allowing yourself to be of and with the people who are struggling for justice in the world and not seperate from them thinking that you are white and therefore superior in the back of your mind brothers and sisters. We are all the same, we all breathe, we all sing, we all dance. We are all sisters and brothers, each to his own culture, specific.

Fuck the fantasy of the ¨great white hope¨we are the hope, all of us, every color there is.

I personally think that their isn't really any thing wrong with saying nigger, unless it is in a hateful way. Like any other word, in my mind, it is only wrong if you say it in a hateful way. I myself say the word nigger and I am white, but I only ever say it when joking or back when I would speak with my black friends, and they fund no problem with it. Even in everyday life their are examples of how saying it is acceptable if it isn't in a haateful way, even by whites, look at Eminem and George Carlin and lots of others. Everyone knows they aren't racist, so for them it is okay to say it.

When it is used in a hateful way, I think that the person that said it should be confronted about his racism but not be stopped from saying the word, because that is censorship and I strongly oppose all forms of censorship.

I know a lot of you will disagree with the references to Lenin etc. but I think regardless, this article is quite good on what our attitude towards the usage of the "n" word should be. It's written by the Spartacist League.

taken from another form

This is something I seen Last night

1:00 am
I'm walking from 30 & Wisconsin ave to 20th & Wisconsin ave.

If you ever been in Milwaukee, well you are familiar how grimey that area is.

*back to the issue*

I get to 29th Street, I see this devil pulling up the corner on his cell phone.

This is Allah words (the truth)

he was talking to some female and he kept saying.

"I know you in the bar with the niggers, drinking with those monkeys."

My first thought was he was an angry White man looking for his run-away- wife.

So as I walk, I notice he keeps circle around, on his cell phone screaming

"Get out that bar, I'm not comming in there to be around those filthy niggers"

I try and ignore it, but what bothered me was he was bumping his music loud!
he was bumping that GAMe album.

I drew up as see, they love our music, but we still niggers to to them.

Now i get to 28th Street where the bar is, and low and behold.

A black woman (sexy) comes out and jump in his car.

Now I'm thinking , What the FUCK.

he starts yelling at her

"If you like niggers then you need to move out of my house"

So I thought about it, how many black women date white men, and allow
them to talk like that?

Most of them allow it

They are afraid to leave them because, there friends and family
will hit them with the "I told you so speach"

The DEVILS know this,
so they call them nigger *****es us niggers and the black women accept it because
they know they fucked up beyond repair

The area where this took place, usually whites are scared to even drive through

this let me know, they have found refuge amongst dumb black women

The FATHER is still the blame though

I don't think white people should have any say in telling black people how they ought to use the word; if they want to use it, what are you going to say, 'stop oppressing yourself!!'. :-p

All I have to say on the case is;
"Nigger" :P
Why is this in philosophy anymore,
'tho? I can't say I find it any philosophical
to talk about the N-Word. More like
"Chit-Chat" ;)
