Hammer and sickle

yea...i SHOULD know this but i dont....


the hammer and sickle is one of the most famous symbols in the world (right up there with the holy trinity, red star, islamic moon, star of david and pacman) but does anyone know (and im sure theres someone out there that does) what exactly the hammer and sickle represents? like...why a hammer and why a sickle?

I'm not sure. I always thought it just represented workers. Sickle for agricultaral and hammer for industrial.....

Cool.. He came to Bristol but only to a 18+ venue so i couldn't go.

ahh man that sucks...but nah lord finesse wasnt performin at the show i went to he was just hostin...and we were yellin at him..we were like "SPIT SOMETHING!!!!!" but he was being a *****..ahah show was ill though i got Jean Grae to sign my CD (dunno if you know who that is)

Why the red in the red star ?

I know the five points of that star represents the continents,and the star itself being of the proportion of phi,which is considered being the perfect proportion respresents Communism.But,I don't understand the colour red.

Same reason the flag is I guess, so symbolize the blood and oppresion that the people(workers poor etc.) have faced, and the anger, and the respect for all those that died in the struggle

The red star represents the CPSU I believe - as the guiding force of the Soviet Union. Was the red star added in the Stalin-era Soviet Union or was it before then?

I believe you can't copyright what is public domain.

As for the Red Star, it was just a symbol of the USSR, and then because they used it, commies started too.

it is similar to how you cannot copyright the Christian cross. They are completely open in the public and so widely used/available they are considered to be the so called 'property of everyone' or, better put, the public. That is a pretty bad explanation of what oublic domain is but I think you can get the picture from it.

It depends on the specific copyright laws of the country in question, but generally the public domain consists of works who's copyrights have expired or workes created expressly without copyright (although that's often tricky).

In the case of the Hammer and Sickle, not only was it created before 1923 (the standard cut-off for copyright), but it also was not released with copyright or identified author, therefore it is asumed to be public domain.

Not to mention that by international convention, national flags and the like are considered to be in the public domain, with very few exceptions.
