And if that passes there will be a mass migration north.

And if that passes there will be a mass migration north. Not highly likely. Canada has already agreed to extradite. What's worse is that this bill was initiated by Democrats, the so-called populist party. This time around it's going to be alot broader. There won't be any exemptions for college students and women are going to be included. They claim they want it done so that rich kids will be forced to serve as well, not just people of low socio-economic status as is the case now. The problem is that rich people have always found a way around the law, and I don't see why this time around would be any different.

Yes, the bill was made by democrats but they did have a fairly good reason, everyone fighting in the rich mens wars are poor. They want this bill to pass so that little Bush twins will have to fight in the war also, in that aspect I support it, but in principal I disagree with forcing someone into war.

Conscription in light of the recent war in Iraq would be an unwise move as it would most likely explode in their faces, however, you can count on them attempting to quietly reintroduce this when the hubbub has died down.

The draft in America would be catastrophic for the administartion and congress that reinstates it. My guess is mass hysteria at first, with all sorts of people speaking out against it. No one will be able to stay away from the issue, but in time, the hubbub will die down, and like always...The will of the people will broken, and the American Dream will die a little more.
Fiji sounds pretty god to me... :D

What's worse is that this bill was initiated by Democrats, the so-called populist party.
By a liberal Democrat, Charles Rangel of the Congressional Black Caucus. Last year it came up for a vote in the House, it got exactly two yes votes. Rangel didn't even vote for his own bill. Real-life trolling, basically.
Besides the draft's unpopularity, a conscript army would greatly reduce U.S. military effectiveness at this time.
Long run, U.S. imperialism will probably at some point need a much larger army, and a draft to raise it. But that's just not what time it is now.

The bill was made by Charles Rangel some time ago to make a statement about the war. Only two people voted for it, everyone else in the House voted against it including Rangel. It was clearly about making a statement.
EditL: I didn't see that Severian commented on this already.

Well it certainly is a big possibility. Seeing as how the military is so overstretched at the moment and not freeing anytime soon. The rich of course need not serve. do you imagine Paris hilton or britney spears going off to Iraq, of course not.
