I just talked to the youth paster at my church about starting a Food Not Bombs organization and he is all for it. In my town there is no strong communist organizations and the church is really the only way to get anything done in this town. But we have a lot of homelessness and poverty so I believe that a program like Food Not Bombs would be really helpful. There is most likely going to be some kind of a ministry attached. Which I am all for concidering I'm a christian and christianity may give some hope to a lot of these homeless people.

Ironic that a church, the clergy being the reason for so much war and chaos, is actually supporting this.

The only problem I see though, is that you don't want to preach to much. If you do, you will alienate some hungry athiest homeless people.

the church is permitting this because its a chance to get people near the church.

I do in this town. It is by far my best connection to a large organization.

You may not realize this, but many people dont have the resources to not only prepare the food, but locate and transport people to a single location.

Dont get me wrong, I dont like churches. I just dont think most people can do this on their own.

Luckily in my town we have a very large FNB and it puts all the church homeless feeding programs to shame. I do understand that in some towns it is probably very hard to start an organization like this and it is ok to allow the church to help, but make sure they all follow the guidelines of Food Not Bombs, and don't take any shit from them about how it should be run.

i dont understand, if you have a place to live, it most likely has a kitchen. you cook the food you collected from a local health food store for free, cook it in you kitchen and distribute it on public property where lots of people will see. i dont understand where a church needs to come into play. even if you need transportation im sure you can get someone with a car to help you.

But many people dont have the time and the money to do that on their own.

Also churches are generally established in the middle of communities. I for example live several miles out of town.

yeah i live a few miles out of town as well. So having my house being the base of operations for something like this wouldn't really work out in this sittuation.

Come on guys, the church isn't all that bad when it is trying to help people. I have to agree with you that it has done some terrible things but that isn't what it is based around. that is just what happens when people who run the church just don't know what the hell they are talking about. I know quite a few christians who are good people and want to help others as much as possible. I have to tell my christian friends that think that athiests are bad the same thing sometimes it doesn't matter what your religious affiliation is. If you want to help people that is good.

Do you realize that Food Not Bombs actually recomends finding a sympathetic church when starting an organization?

yes but if you dont need to why would you. besides thats most likely until you can function on your own

It turns out that my organization is not going to be nearly as church based as i thought. We are going to get transportation probobly use of a kitchen and hopefully donations from them but that is it. No ministry.

Only you know your town, if you think a church would be the best idea use a church - church halls can also act as good places of shelter for homeless people. With a church you can get donations from the christian public aswell as the atheist public.

This is all so very strange considering that Food Not Bombs is infact an anarchist (or anarchistic) organisation.

They do great work, but I'm not a huge fan of their food - I'm no vegan...
