What nations are truly socialist today, 2005.

Cuba of course. But then it gets a bit hazy. China? N Korea? Vietnam?

Define "socialism". State capitalism?

Would that not be another thread entirely.

Instead, which states claim to be Socialist? Is that better.

There has never been a socialist state, and rarely has true power flowed to and from the worker.

Examples of a state in transition to socialism could be the Paris Commune, the early Soviet Union, and briefly in China.

Very true. China was ok until 1958 (Cultural Revolution.) I won't post more on the cultural revolution in China unless someone starts a thread about it. I just did an essay on it for history (we've been studying Mao and his rise to power etc.) so I'm getting pretty sick of it!

There is no such thing as a communist state as Communism is an era marked by socialism and no state.

None of those are Communist (some claim to be, not Cuba though). China have opened up now, Cuba haven't claimed to be Communist for years, as for Laos and Vietnam? North Vietnam is still 'Communist' but I don't know much about it. Same with North Korea.

Union of Socialist Soviet Republics?

If they were states in transition to socialism what were they then? State capitalist? Isnt Socialism the first stage of Communism?

There is no such thing as a communist state as Communism is an era marked by socialism and no state.

I still have trouble with a Communist state(sic) being an oxymoron. What about the police, jails etc It would still be a State but not in the way we know it.

There would be no police in a socialist society and jails wouldn't only harbor real criminals, not thiefs (what would they steal?) and drug users.
By communism, practically no crime would exist because the conditions that create crime would not exist. Neighbourhood watches and psychologist could easily deal with crimes by mental disorder.

My political development is still in its infancy but, yes I would consider myself a Marxist. Can you not see where I'm coming from though. No prisons, no crime etc

Just because they call themselves socialist, does not make them socialist.

If you are a Marxist. But many Communists aren't Marxists.

The police would not be the kind of "police" we have now. Jails would exist in a completely different way.

Crime would occur, just not in the same amount as it does now. I don't think crime would dry up, but so many fewer policemen would need to be around, and even then we would mostly just need police to solve crimes, or firefighters for obvious reasons.

The idea is the there is now governing organ of the state. It is the PEOPLE which decide, so it isn't a government deciding.
