Correction. "The Only Band that Matters".
Strummer & Co. were geniuses and I thought the way they fused reggae and punk was awesome.

The Clash were not the best band ever, like you said it's arguable and everyone has their own opinion on musical taste.

yeah i own a couple cd's from major labels, but now i dont buy them. i dont shop in cd stores at the mall. i mostly listen to punk rock so i buy from small distros off the net. yeah im kinda strict with what i buy. i try not to buy new clothing since most are made in other countries and sweatshops. i usually dont go to movies anymore if i have to pay. stuff like that. its not that im so anti big labels its just that any musician speaking revolutionary politics should not be on a major label, because major labels are about money. do you kinda get where im coming from?

I was raised on 'The Clash' and like everything they've done and how the influenced later punk bands. My favourite seven Clash songs would be.
7)The Magnificent Seven - The reason there are seven songs in the list
6)White Riot - Short and sweet
5)Rock The Casbah - Just a brilliant song, oft-covered
4)I Fought The Law - An anthem.
3)Should I Stay Or Should I Go - There most ubiquitous song
2)London Calling - Summed up a generation's collective anger in one, volatile track
1)Hammersmith Palais - Arguably the greatest rock song ever after 'Stairway To Heaven'

I don't understand how 'The Clash' can be boring. They are extremely varied. The only thing that holds their songs together is that they are all by The Clash. If not, they could be from at least 4 or 5 different groups. Theres no way you can say everything by them is boring.
Thats like saying all fruit is boring. Apples, maybe. But what about lychee, pineapple? They're just too varied for you to dislike every one.
The Clash were legends and changed the face of music as we know it. Period.

I dunno, man.
Those songs are from their debut album which is widely regarded as one of their best and as one of the best punk albums of all time.
Clash City Rockers is like a lame, repititive version of White Riot.
Mediocre...for the Clash.

yeah if the clash records were sold on a small distro that promotes radical politics, then yes piracy wouldnt be cool. but the money you spend on clash records goes to sony, so you being on a revleft forum i dont see why you are anti-piracy

I was never, and I'm still not, the type to have a "favorite band", but when it comes down to it, I really love the Clash. Something about that band does it for me. And the thing is, I don't like a lot of they're stuff, I only really listen to about a third of Sandinista! and I don't even really like the Combat Rock album (to say nothing of Cut the Crap, good lord).
But still, anyone that can listen to the London Calling album, or Safe European Home, or White Man in Hammersmith Palais, and still say that the Clash is boring, repetitive or overrated has lost any credibility (in terms of music) in my opinion.
I have a question that some of you guys may be able to help me with, possibly celtopunk. Does anyone know of a good biography of the Clash? I'm specifically looking for something that talks about their time in Jamaica. Joe talks about it a little in the DVD I have (and obviously, in the lyrics of Safe European Home), but I'd like to hear more about it. From what I've heard they were chased off the island by rude boys!
Edit:
Rise Up
Piracy is wrong? Piracy can be wrong, but it isn't necessarily wrong. Like the previous poster said, the Clash were on a major label (not to mention the fact that half of the band is dead), they get very little of the cash we spend. I mean, I judge each individual case. For instance, if I kind of want an album but I know I'd never pay money for it even if I couldn't steal it, I'll download it. That isn't stealing beacuse I wouldn't have bought it anyways, and since it is a file on a computer and not a real CD with a case, it isn't costing them anything. I am not stealing because I'd have never bought the album anyway, I'm not depriving them of a sale like I would be if I downloaded an album I would've otherwise bought. Beyond that, I will not pay money to major labels. I simply do not buy reggae Cd's (and I listen to a ton of reggae) because most of those guys do not own their music and don't make a cent (or they're dead, I see no reason to pay money that's going to go to Bob Marley's wife).
How does an advocate of the crimethinc methods see piracy as wrong? Aren't the crimethinc people pretty opposed to intellectual copyrights?

Overrated because so many people think theyre the best band to ever hit the streets.
Theyre played on radio all the time.

I'm starting to like Sandinista! though. The production on it makes it interesting and there are some good songs people tend to overlook.

How does that make them overrated exactly?
See, I think they actually are one of the best bands of all time, are you saying that my opinion is wrong?
Theyre played on radio all the time.
Again, what the fuck does this have to do with the merits of their music?
The fact that they are played on the radio only reinforces the fact that they are great. The Clash were so great at making music they managed to appeal to punk rockers, reggae fans and people who only listen to "Top 40" style shit. That is impressive and it only backs up the fact that they made spectacular, diverse music that appeals to everyone.

I've read quite a few books on The Clash and I'd have to say that Passion Is A Fashion is by far the best.

Yeah dude, because like, you totally have to like, sound like shit and stuff to be real punk rock.
If one more person reccomends Crass with the intent of showing off how badass and underground they are I think I might put a pipe bomb under my computer. Crass was an interesting band, good album covers, good lyrics, but their music sucked, plain and simple (with the exception of a very few songs).

Where to start...?
Played on the radio all the time?? Not that I've experienced although I gave up on commercial radio a LONG time ago. Maybe one or two select songs. However if they are on the radio "all the time" why are you complaining about them being on the radio if you are listening to the radio? What is it you want to hear on the fucking radio?? Start your own pirate station or get involved in a college/community station and play what you think people should hear.
As for that great band CRASS here's what I said about them just a few moments ago in another topic:
"... as for Crass, put on the record or cd, turn your stereo all the way down and read the lyrics, the experience will be far more enjoyable."
Anachro Commie if you don't like certain threads about bands start your own fucking threads then about bands you think we should know about or talk about.
And as for the overrated claim well that's a matter of opinion and one that I don't share.
Oh and Urban sorry about the book thing I'm not much of a page turner these days and I usually lean towards sci-fi/cyberpunk or straight out political stuff. I've found most books about music/bands/musicians to be cheap attempts at cashing in. Although I've always wanted to read Lydon's book.

If selling out means releasing not only a double album (declared by many, myself included, as the best album of all time), but a triple album as well for the price of one album while simoultaneously taking royalty deductions....

The Clash were not only amazing musicians, but had a message. A voice! Rage was the Clash of their day, and we really need a Clash/Rage for THIS GENERATION. All this shit going on in the world that now has America Actively involved and possibly wanting to LEARN! People need a voice. I just wonder why Zach de la Rocha left....

In my own humble (yet correct :D ) opinion The Clash were quite simply the greatest rock 'n' roll band of all time. Great music, combined with politics and, even though it is often overlooked, they were incredibly glamerous and romantic, especially when you compare them with modern dullards such as Coldplay/Keane/Travis etc.
As for favourite tracks, I'd have to go for the classics, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Complete Control/ Straight to Hell.
Lot of under-rated gems on Sandinista as well, "If Music could talk", "Someone got murdered", "Magnificent Seven", The Clash were experimenting with rap before anyone outside of The Bronx even knew what it was.

Took the words right from my mouth (well finger tips). They fused every style of music together and created their own, and no one can even do it. That is saying something when your music is so good you can't be ripped off. I love "Lost in a Supermarket" and "Jeanie Jones".
