My mother's from Esquimalt, BC (just outside of Victoria, on the island), but I've never been to Canada (well, when I moved to the Americas, the plane passed over Prince Edward's Isle)

Happy birthday Canada. Bah. Canada day, the 4th of July and any other national holiday that celebrates independence or founding is completely not for society or the people, but simply used for propaganda for state power. The state uses and tries to develop emotional sentiments in order for them to later use to gear up the people to support ludicrous domestic and foreign policy that maybe or maybe not violent in nature.
See that is the thing. Propaganda slogans like “support our troops” don't mean anything. It is completely empty of all content, or any meaning. Why? Because it doesn't say anything. It doesn't try to change your minds about anything, or try to change an opinion about a certain topic. It simply states something that everyone already does, and what everyone already thinks. What the question should be is – support our Iraq policy. Support our foreign policy. See, people will argue that because it say something, and it has meaning. However, by just saying “support our troops” is nothing more than the state trying to use your own sentiment to support violent policy.
For example, watch the Fourth in the states. I will bet you a million dollars that the Bush administration will use the 4th as a symbol of American pride correlated with all the “good” in Iraq and Afghanistan – even though world and American opinion don't agree with the war, and that is was illegal. That the 4th of July is some how to be a good American you must “support our troops” or some bullshit like that. Holidays like this is always used to support aggressive state policy. For example, How good is Canada day for the aboriginals of Canada? Yeah, lets remind them or their personal genocide and force segregation, or lets remind the aboriginals of the United States. Same deal. Its all crap.
I still enjoy the things like independence day (I'm an American living in Canada) but I love it for what Thomas Jefferson wrote and wanted it for. The equal conditions and rights of mankind. That all men are created equal with inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That reason will dictate the right and commonsense of mankind and he will do anything in his will power to stop tyranny. My independence day is for Thomas Jefferson, and most notably that if governments fail to achieve these ends it is the right of the people to abolish or change the government that it sees fit. My independence day will be the day when the state no longer exists.

Celebrating greater political and democractic independance, is worthwhile as it marks the end to greater imperialism.
Canadians are celebrating greater political autonomy from england.
But more than that Canadians are celebrating screwing there capitalist overlords out of a day of work.
What the far right has done to the fourth of July is hardly a reflection of Canadians sentiments on Canada day. Canadian Native culture plays an ever increasing role in the countries celebration every year. Because our becoming more autonomous from England was also them becoming more autonomous from England.

I'll remember that next time I look at the currency with the Queen's face, or better yet next time I hear, or see Adrienne Clarkson – or better yet, next time I see the Queen stop by for a little visit. Or maybe next time I see the Ontario license play with a big old crown in the centre of it. Or better yet, next time I hear Canadian monarchist plea and Baaa their justification of how its our “heritage”. Please, Canada has every bit of British imperialism rooming its head through ever nook and cranny of the Canadian countryside. Even though Clarkson etc might be a figure head with no real political power, nevertheless, the shadow lurks.

I suppose you can back up these statements. 1) Have you spent a considerable amount of time within the United States in order to pass judgment of personal or cultural phenomena? 2) Native culture might “play” a role in its celebration but its certainly a fabrication, a sort of Potemkin village at most. Moreover, I would like to know how natives of Canada are autonomous from England. Granted, the island does not effect them, but British culture and British ethnocentric, genocide, poverty, stolen land, and culture has had an significant impact on them – and still today. I mean don't get me wrong – I'm sure after they “celebrate” their festivals they are more than happy to walk back to their designated reserves and celebrate how great it is to be independent from Britain, but then have their Canadian ancestors repeat the process. Yay Canada day!

We were governedby men in england then we were governed by men here that we got to vote for, a pretty big step. And I'm a grown up I'm not afraid of shadows.

Mississauga, Ontario! It's a city that's near Toronto (but not a part of it or that GTA thing). So far, I haven't really met any other people who are as far left as I am in my area... it's a total bummer :( Some people give me a lot of shit for being communist... the whole "Why do you bother to believe in it? It's not like it's going to work!" and all of that shit... God, it totally pisses the hell out of me!
