You're thinking of historical materialism, that's the tool used to study history.
Dialectical materialism is essencially the idea that everything is made up of opposites that, well, oppose one another and it is through this conflict that change occurs. Change only happens when one side is stronger than another.
One of the members on this board has a link in his signature to an excellent website that explains all of this in easy to understand language.

Thoose a good sites, but another good idea is to check out Communist and Socialist parties as they have learner books on Marxist topics.
From my communist party i bought "What is Historical Materialism", it is from a series produced in the USSR in the 70's called ABC of Marxism.

Try Part 2 (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=34263&hl=quisling&st=0) of Socialism:Utopian and Scientific by Frederick Engels.
We're discussing that booklet over in the Study Group subforum, BTW.
Also:
Trotsky briefly explains basics of dialectics (http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1939/1939-abc.htm)
Encyclopedia of Marxism: Dialectical Materialism (http://www.marxists.org/glossary/terms/d/i.htm#dialectical-materialism) Article on dialectics immediatelly after.
