View Full Version : The "Hidden Curriculum" [Education]

Bowles and Gintis (1976) state that the education system operates a "Hidden Curriculum".
This means that education pushes/socialises children into the working class-mould of society and maintains children's social status whether high or low.
Also, the main feature of the "Hidden Curriculum" is that the education acts as a way of social control. Children are forced to become "socially approved" youths and by the power of the teacher they are made to do what they are told and not to question authority. This means that it becomes children's nature to accept that someone will always rule over them and that nothing can be done.
There are two types of curriculum, the normal curriculum of subjects and the "Hiddem Curriculum" that will constantly opress the next generation into accpeting they are powerless.
We seem powerless as students, if we rebel or cross the teacher/lecturer we will be expelled, but something needs to be done. Any Ideas/Methods?

Learn and unite!

If we just make extra curricular research then we can make our own minds up on things. This will stop the cappies in their tracks.

Read and listen to ideas from everyone. Then you can make up your own mind about the world. Don't end your education at 3:00 every weekday. And when you get any lip for your beliefs fight back (verbally).

Like I said before: Students should quit being students and become full time revolutionaries! If you accept the role of the student you accept the role of the slave. You are a nigger.

Ugg. NO. Free education is a good idea. You can still assume the role of a student and learn what you want to learn, and be a revolutionary. Trust me I do it all the time. You still need to go to school to be educated about a lot of things. Just don't listen to the right-winged bull crap that they shove down your ears.

To conquer over the oppression of the student, simply refuse the authority. When your sixteen drop out, get your GED and thenbe free.

I have started several protests, and actions at my school... it almost never achieves anything but expulsion. However, I would rather be punished for what I know is right, then be silent about something I know is wrong.

as you may have heard me say before, i believe in dropping out of the public schools and teaching yourself stuff. think of all the time spent at school, and think of all the things that time could be spent on that is constructive!

hm, seems to me that most of you think that school is a waste of time.

a lot of workers fought for the right of their children to go to school, always remember that. if certain teachers talk bullshit, who cares? just don't listen.

you think school is a waste of time? ok, but what is work? it is even worse :(
if you see the chance to finish school and to study afterwards use your chance. there are so many rich people out there who have rightwing views. what if one of us could get the chance to gain power? ever thought about this? earning a lot of money does not neccesseraly mean that you will become a bourgois or a fascist. you can use your money, your power and your time to help people and to support the movement.

its not easy to drop school and become a full time revolutionary, you cannot leave school until 16 in the uk it is law and you will be sent down with your parents. Free education IS a good thing, atleast with education we can learn new things. For example i'm doing sociology in school and it enables me to learn more abour marxism and opposing ideologies.
school has to interfer with your education because to receive an education you have to go to school until you are at the correct age to go to univeristy.

Hey, Dumb Dumbs:

More than teaching an educational curriculum, teachers transfer a culture from one generation to the next. Accept it, pure and simple. If you don't want this transfer, don't send your kid to school. And State socialist nations such as China, the former USSR and Vietnam transfer this in a far more brainwashed formula than the 50 different systems in the U.S. Ironically, the U.S. has the least of this transfer these days as we're all over the map and hardly lockstep.

P.S. Samuel Clemens gets the credit for the "never let my schooling interfer with my education" comment.

Hey dumb ass,
schools pass on culture but the present culture of the world powers (USA/UK) is facism; we dont want that. We want change/revolution, not for kids to be socialised into future facists.
Do not insult the work of Bowles and Gintis. The guy you speak of was an individual, the majority of chilldren are brain washed - perhaps your one?

Dear RedStar,

I do not believe the culture passed on to children in America is facsist. That's fantasy.

But, as a 20 year expert in this field, I can tell you that ALL SCHOOLING INVOLVES THE TRANSER OF CULTURE, EVEN ONE BASED IN SOCIALISM/MAXISM, etc.

Accept that as a fact of life.

In any revolution, the first you kill are the armed forces. The second you kill (or deal with) are the teachers.

Sorry century I just thought when you aid dumb dumbs you were being arogant and ignorant.
I suppose America passes on a mixture of both. I believe that their are many courses to take, the media on the outside seems to decide which one a youth will choose

Media (I use this in a broad sense from television to the internet to what have you) is far more powerful than the classroom. It's simply cooler and has the abiliity to grant immediate self gratification, whereas studying does not.

I used the expression Dumb Dumbs because so many were trying to "not teach culture" in their new vision for a school. As I mentioned, this is ludicrous, because everything a teacher does is teach culture: deadlines, courtesy and fairness is taught at the same time the Pledge, mathematics and reading are taught.

I have been to schools all over the world and believe me, compared to the P.R.China, or Japan or even Spain, we do this less over here, mainly because citizens have sued on various bases to remove those cultures which have been religious, or racist or what have you.

From the point of view of an observer angry at money's influence on children's decision making, yes, it will get you mad. But public school's main problem is students not working, yet not doing anything else.

Like the Pink Floyd song, the kids have successfully got the teachers to leave them alone, but the kids haven't replaced the teachers with anything else.

But thanks for your clarification, Red.

You do talk alot of sense Century. The media is very powerful, expecially here in the UK. With regards to newspapers, tabloids are numerous and after 9/11 held headlines like "PANIC" and "MONSTERS INC. THE EVIDENCE NEEDED THAT THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN BINLADEN AND SADAM" - which are blatent lies. so the newspapers have those people with less brainpower brain washed.
