There are alot of ways around this. If you are using a firewall, it will notify you anytime a particular program attempts to access the internet. You can then tell the firewall not to allow it that access. In addition, there's no law that says you have to use Windows Media Player for your DVDs. There are plenty of other programs out there that accomplish the same task. Furthermore, if you're using dial-up, you really don't have to worry at all because your connection dailogue will come up before WMP can transmit anyhow.

PS I should mention that when I say firewall, I'm talking about a third party firewall. Not that crappy little thing that comes with WinXP Home, which probably will allow any software developed by Microsoft to communicate unmolested anyhow.
