What does it mean and symbolise?

A black flag symbolizes resistance to surrendor and generally represents anarchism.

I'm assuming black clothing would symbolize the same.

It depends what type of clothing. Obviously, there's the black goth look, which I guess is generally meant to symbolise depression and angst. A black military look, however, I would tend to associate with the SS and thus Fascism, that's not to say however that anybody who wears black is automatically a goth or a Nazi, it all comes down to context...

I agree, and cutters are the worst, they are all rich and have no real problems and only cut themselves to be popular and they say it relieves the pain, what bullshit, how the hell does cutting yourself relieve pain.

It has become nothing anymore. It is a "fashion statement" which basically just means that most people do it to be an individual whos just like everyone else. I suppose that there are still some who wear it because they are an anarchist or somthing actually meaningful like that but not most.

hey how about we not joke around about killing random people for sport..... I'm big into people not dieng. I don't know just seems like the naturally humane thing to do is not want to just randomly kill people, or anything for that matter. It symbollizes whatever you want it to symbolize. I could wear black because I believe that it symbolizes my love for pretzels. There are however stereotypes which have already been named, anarchism, goth, etc. I personally just like wearing it, not sure why, I just do.

ok look here kid. I'm not so pissed about your negative outlook on goth culture or whatever.... I'm just a little anoyed by the fact that you can joke around about destroying life. I personally don't like the whole goth scene myself either, but it is a differnet culture and i exept it. You don't need to go around talking about killing them because they act a sertain way or whatever. I don't know about all these peopel who have had negative (at least it seems) experience with people who cut. And contrary to popular belief, not all cutters want to commit suicide. Cutting is a coping mechinism that some people use to deal with everyday events. Some people may exersise, some people may eat, and some people may cut, it doesn't make them any better or worse than the people around them. Some people have mentioned that some people cut to be more popular. That may be true for some of them but the majority try to hide it and won't tell anybody what they've done and if somebody sees it they lie about what happened.

In case you haven't inferred yet, I'm a self-injurer (I cut and burn). And yes, I come from a upper-middle class background, and just because of that don't assume that I don't have "real" problems to deal with. I have Schizoaffective Disorder (a combination of Schizophrenia and a mood disorder, either depression, mania, or bipolar. I have depression as my affective). I have hallucinations daily and I'm losing my memory and I'm slowly losing grip of reality and medications just delay it for awhile not prevent it.

I'm not trying to make people feel sorry for me, because I don't feel like I need to be felt sorry about. I'm able to live my life how I want to now, and that is what is important. I just think that your view of cutters/self-injurers is close-minded. And I realize I may be flamed for this post but I don't give a shit.

as far as I know black flags were first used by european farmers who fought against their kings and opressors. some kind of early anarchism without any ideological background. therefore later anarchitsts also used black clothing and flags.

Also, in relation to the fashion element of the wearing of black: it has historically been a popular colour that has lasted the ages due to it being so very simple.

It does not stand out. It is a minimalist approach to aesthetics. And indeed, this are the ones that last due to the conservative and inhibited nature of capitalist society.

But due to this simplicity, it can then quite easily be interptreted and co-opted in many ways and for many purposes.

Afterall, black may well be the only things similar about fascism and anarchism. :lol:
