That is shocking, shorely the people who have been fired would win a legal battle agaisnt theire dismissal.

i don't know... i have a hunch that they sign those rights away when they join!
GM make their workers who drive non-GM cars park further away from the factory! thre was a guy who disobeyed, and had his car towed, and i believe he was fired.

I'm not surprised that they would lose against the corporations. The legal system here in america definately is in favor of corporations.

yeah, no shit!
this is another reason people need to band togethere in workers' unions!
how about we go talk to some of the people who work at places that employ these policies, and convince them to start unions?

No, they didn't have any rights to start with.
All that stuff about the right to free speech and so forth? That only protects you from the government, from being arrested. It doesn't protect you from the bosses, from being fired.
In the U.S., except for a few states, an employer can legally fire you for almost any reason, or no reason at all. Race, sex, and a few other kinds of discrimination are specifically outlawed. Any other reason is fair game.
You have no rights on the job...unless you have a union. Then you have whatever rights you and your coworkers are willing and able to fight for.

They were firing people a while ago because they smoked, which would have led to cancer and caused them to use their health insurance.
You gotta give to credit to the bosses ability to cut losses and spyphon of those profits.

With money comes skilled lawyers, better press work, etc.
With no money comes bottom-of-the-barrell lawyers, no press work... pretty much nothing.

This is shocking and, what scares me most is that down here in Aus. own government is trying to move towards a more US system where you can't challenge dismissals if the company employs 100 people or less. Absolutely shocking.

In New Zealand on a show called, Expose, They showed and employer who fired people who smoked in their spare time. This was in there own time including at home. This is and outrage, give me some rope and i'll make him a hangmans noose!!

yes, it happens all the damn time!
perhaps it would be called for to make some flyers saying something along the lines of "have you been fired for unjust reasons? don't let it happen again! start or join a union!"
that's just some shit off the top of my head... someone spice it up, please!

If they get a decent judge or jury they would win.
And yes, there are laws preventing it, well atleast sexual, racial, and religous bias. Political stance, drinking, etc. shouldn't have an effect like that.
Just because some of our rights are being taken, doesn't mean we still don't have the others. Right to jury, right to assemble. How 'bout this, we seek foreign help? I'm sure there is a nice middle-eastern country that is fed up with it as much as we are.

No. In most states there is no law to sue under, unless you can prove racist, sexist, religious, age, or disability discrimination.
For example, in the firing of Michael Italie, (http://www.themilitant.com/2001/6543/654302.html) Socialist Workers Party candidate for mayor of Miami, from his nonunion garment-shop job, both the SWP and the ACLU looked for a law to sue under. No luck, or at least it was not judged winnable. It was possible to conduct a protest campaign and make the employer pay a certain price in public opinion.

Have any unions in the US done/said anything about this issue?
My guess is not, but I hope the workers do organise around this issue of being fired for no reason or petty reasons with no relevance to their work.

All revolution needs planning and discussion. This is that place and as such is at the forefront of that role. It deserves the name revolutinoary left and it is our task to uphold that name through activism, debate, constructive criticism and theory.

Debate can happen on a forum, yes.
But "planning"? No.
This is just a forum. Nothing more, nothing less.
