About an year ago, here in iceland, the government joined with the US company ALCOA to create the largest Dam in Europe. There was much debade in the parlament about the project but in the end the Dam was given an ok.

The dam is called Kárahnjúkavirkjun.

Since then has been an massive movement been created that has the main objective of protesting against the Dam. Up to this point, the protests have all been in the city, and outside the parlament. Now, the movement has decited that the next protest is going to be a special one. The protest is going to be held in the area around the dam. The dam is placed literally on the opposite side ofthe country.

Planing have begun, and today, is the first meeting. Hundreds of activists are gathering and they all share the same point of view.

The dam will fill up this massive canyon, which is known as one of the most magical places on the planet.

the area which is darken, is the area that is going to go underwater.

If you have any questions about the dam or the protest, go ahead and ask.

The Dam is build on an rather low price, considering that it is huge project. The Dam is going to produce energy which will be sold to the highest bidder, basicly, it is going to secure icelands power and money troubles for some time. These are the main arguements, but the cost is that a huge part of the land is going under water, some species living in the area are not going to survive.

And, now, when the proect is on its way, the icelandic government recruited hundreds of workers from various countrys, this is something that they said was not going to happen, the dam was going to be, as they said, a big part of securing an job for people living the area.

The matter is complex, and the nation has been torn apart by this matter.

Thoe, there is still one arguement which i, personally can identify with, the arguement is that Iceland is a country filled with natural resources and therefore it is better to have all of these power plant is one spot, in iceland, and therefore will other countrys not be forced to destroy their nature.

just remember that if protesting doesn't work, don't stop there!

I would much rather have HEP than a big raw material burning plant. Sure, in the short term, a valley will be flooded, but do you not want to secure the energy needs for future generations?

It is far better than having a CO2 spewing plant to ruin your islands natural beauty and to further contribute to the problems of the earths environment. HEP is effective, efficient and clean power.

It seems it is only the short term effects on the environment you are concerned over.

The thing is that iceland has one of the largest amount of spare energy in the world. We already have many energy plants and dams. The energy from this one will mostly be sold at enfladed prices, energy that only rich western nations will have the capabilities to buy.

Personally am i really not that "green", but this dam is just not neccessary. (how is that spelled?)

Ah right, I understand now!

Well in that case, I support the opposition to this dam.

Does the opposition have a website or anything that you can link us too?
