Some of you may be familiar with the Direct Action Tendency (http://www.actiontendency.net), which is an anti-authoritarian, revolutionary tendency within the Socialist Party USA. We are a tendency of both Anarchists and Marxists...basically those committed to anti-authoritarian/libertarian socialist politics and a belief in direct action. Many in DAT are members of the IWW, the War Resisters League, or are former members of SDS (or those who would have joined, if it didn't collapse before they were old enough).

Since we formed, we have encountered or been contacted by many who said they were interested in the DAT, but had no desire to join the Socialist Party USA. Others, such as Redstar2000, commented that DAT seemed like a good thing, but was probably limited by the fact that its members are party of the SP-USA.

After considering these things, and having some internal discussion, we decided to allow those outside the party who are interested to join the DAT, free of charge, as a "supporter" (which is sort of our way of getting around the party membership issue). We already pretty much act autonomously from the SP-USA, and the more non-SP members we get in the DAT, the more likely we will go our own way...

Since making this change, we did have quite a few people join as "supporters" and we now have a Direct Action Tendency local in Maryland.

We don't want paper members. We want people dedicated to actually doing shit.

If you want to learn more, go to our website at: http://www.actiontendency.net/

Also, check out our news magazine, "Next Left Notes:" http://www.nextleftnotes.net/

If you have questions, please ask them here!

i was wondering what regions you have locals in. i didn't see any info about that on the site. i've been a bit timid about joining any rev. left organizations but the DAT had piqued my interests

Right now we are strongest in NYC, Northern New Jersey, Maryland (I forget which city), and probably Texas. We're still small, but we're growing. In my view, the more DAT members we get who are not in the SP the better. The DAT local in Maryland is all non-SP.

Right now, we only have one person in Philly (which I saw you are from in your profile).

Salisbury Maryland. Philly probably has potential to support a DAT local. I know of some redskins up there who might be interested.

I think it was a good decision for us, and it already has brought us dedicated new members. I hope others here are interested as well.

I live in MD, I'll check it out

Edit: I'm only 16 and live in Frederick, a ways away from Salisbury. Is it worth joining, could I make a difference [get your inspirational speech ready]

Secondly, is your website fully updated? When I go to the Join DAT section it still says i have to subscribe to the princples of the SP-USA (even though thats not a huge problem, the world socialism always kind of scares me)

Well, what we mean by that is that you can't be like a fascist/racist/capitalist etc and that you want a "democratic socialism" as opposed to the Leninist variety.

You could read over the principles here (http://www.sp-usa.org/about/principles.html) if you want to be sure, but don't worry because it's not like there is a "party line" that you have to toe.
