Yesterday, October 4th, was the Anniversary of one of the most important victories for the British left. On oct 4th 1936 Mosely, attempted to lead the British Union of Fascists down Cable street in the East End. The road had ebeen specifically picked, partly because it was home to large Jewish population. For those who dont know the BUF was britains first Nazi organisation. They were not marginal as they are now but instead growing rapidly. There agenda centered around the huge levels of Jewish immigration which had taken place earlier on in the Century, mosely had met with hitlet.
Anyway on Oct the 4th 1936 250,000 Jews, Socialists and Communistsincluding many Irish Dockworkers gathered to prevent the BUF marching. The BUF were escorted by 4000 olice who for 2 hours to make a way through for the Fascists.
People were building barricades in the street with anything they could find. A communist tram driver stopped his tram in the middle of the road and simply got out. The police fought but could not make a way through for the fascists. Mosely and the BUF were forced to turn back, and this was a turning point for the Fascist movement in Britain. Following this defeat it declined.
