This film is about a woman from Czeckoslovakia who goes to live in the U.S. in order to have an operation carried out on her son so that her son will not lose his sight.
It is a sad and tragic film but excellently directed by Lars Von Trier. It stars Bjork as the mother. I do not like her music personally but she is amazing in this film. However, it is really Von Trier's work that makes this film stand out.
I never imagined I would like this sort of film really so I was very surprised to find it is one my of my favourites now.

I like the Dogma films and think they are interesting I even like this film a lot and have it on my recommended viewing list but... this is the most fucking over rated film ever!
She and the kid suffers from Lebers Optic Atrophy which I live in danger from and it is overwrought bullshit with no true sensitivity when it boils down to it.
It's an interesting exercise in film but hardly a great one and it tries too hard to tug on the heart strings.
dancer in the dark is so so so so sad though.
After seeing that i only want to watch films where the main characters end up happy and in love.

The primary reason that this film is good is that it is well directed. It is true that the film does not focus on the Lebers Optic Atrophy, in fact I don't think they ever mention the term. It doesn't really treat it with sensitivity - the film focuses largely on the mother, it doesn't even give you any sense of sympathy for her son. It is nevertheless a great film.

Dancer in the Dark is a good movie. I wrote apaper on it once, I think the movie has a political message. Especially interesting are the trial scenes when the communist pin on the dance instructer turns into a big red flower durring Bjork's fantasies. I think there is an interesting subtext, I'll see if I can fnd the paper.

I saw Dancer in the Dark a few years ago when it was in a few small theaters. I actually cried at the end.

I still say it's sensationalist and over the top.

It is dramatic, but I didn't find that its will to be dramatic was too overt. Such things are subjective anyway.
It is interesting that the film is set in the U.S. despite Lars Von Tries nether having been there in his life. I think it was filmed in a scandinavian county.

I know a couple of his films are shot only in a studio, but Dancer In The Dark has a number of scenes where you see fairly wide landscapes.
