Yes,

I am very ignorant about Slovenia, it makes me ashamed really when i think about it. Just two questions:

1. Is your nation benefitting from the EU?

2. What is Slovenia's position in the troubles in the Balkans?

Cheers.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Ask any question you want, and i'm sure one of our members can answer it.

How has Slovenia been influenced by its position in Europe? By that, i mean the influence of Italy to the West and the other former Yugoslav republics to the east?

1. I don`t think we gained anything when we joined the EU. Prices of products are the same as they were, pays haven`t changed. Some people even lost their jobs and some factories are closing or being sold to foreigners.
There were some troubles with Italians which doesn`t want us in EU, because they still have their faschist origin.

2. I think Slovenia has some troops in Kosovo in the UN mission, but that is all. We don`t want to interfer in others problems. We were neutral during Croatian-Serbain war (that is why some Croats hate us, we and Croats are Catholic, while Serbs are Orthodox; probalby Croats expected help).
There are als many incidents with Croatia. Southern borther is not known exactly; last year, during our parlament election, members of Sloveinan Peoples Party (SLS - Slovenska ljudska stranka - in slovene) went down to southern border and wanted to plant a tree Tilia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilia) which is Slovenian symbol. There were some problems with Croatian police officers, that those Party members didn`t want to show their passports, because they thought they are on Slovenian soil.
There are also some problems about bay of Piran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piran), because come Croatian fishreman want Slovenian sea for themself and are fishing in slovenian natinal waters + there is some space of water which is not known to whom it belongs.

If you have ever heard of Karantania (or Corotan): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karantania
This was the first state of Slovenia. Anyway Slovenians were inhabating the whole Karantania plus eastern Italy. Some say that we Slovenians and Slovaks are the same nation later spplit in half y the Germans (Austrians are supposed to be germanized Carantians...). Austrians doesn`t wont to give our minority in Austria (which is in all southern Austria) signs (road signs, signs of important buildings) in both languages.

Italians are known to be very faschistic, that is why we are hated by them. The East of Italy (around Trieste and Montafalcone) is supposed to be Slovene (there are more Slovenians then Italians, espacialy in Trieste). After World War II, Yugoslavia had Triest for 40 days, and then we had to "return" it to Italians (which became democratic state, after Americans did fix the elections...because they didn`t won`t communists to win).

Croats are OK people, but there are many nationalists, which are counting us as Alpian Serbs (because they think we hate them...) or even Alpian Croats (that we are supposed to be Croats, which later developed othre language). We were many years (about thousand) under German ruling, while Croats were mostly under Hungarian.

Hungarians are the best neghbourun state! We have little problems, ew have Sloveinan tv in hungarym they have Hungarian in Slovenia, an we are going well!

Marxist-leninist, I would say.
I read books of Che Guevara (Guerrilla Warfare, and a book based on Guevara`s life) and Marx and Engels (Capital, Communist Manifest).
I also read ancient philosophers like Plato.
I have also read Mein Kampf from Adolf Hilter. You have to know your enemy, they say.

Actually not. We have a Communist Party of Slovenia, which didn`t participate in last perlamentarian elections (December 2004, I think). We also have Social Democrates (their president is also in Parlament of EU), which have seats in parlament.
We had liberal-ex-communist rulers form 1992 (when independance was declered) to 2004. But on the last elections, they are in minority in opposition, and Democrates (they are right, while Social Democrates and Liberals are left) have taken the rule (except the president, who is from Liberal Party).

We were once a part of Yugoslavia. Tito was half Slovene (by his mother) and the second most improtant man in Yugoslavia was Edvard kardelj, also Slovene. A lot of people want the old days of socialism back.
