Hi people. This is a thread for Australian's, New Zealander's and other people from the Pacific region (if there are any around here). For any new people, rather then reading all the thread, you might want to skip to the end and just read the last couple of pages.

But before you do that, I am going to post links to various groups around Aus/NZ if you have links, either post or PM me them and I'll put 'em here if I like them. I don't know any NZ orgs except Fight dem Back.

I decided to add a bunch of links for new people looking for stuff in Australia. Apologies if I leave some important organisation out. They are not organised in any real fashion. Also see http://anarchy.org.au/?page_id=4

The obvious groups in Australia on the 'left' are the Greens, you can look 'em up your self. Socialist Alliance (http://www.socialist-alliance.org/) and the youth group Resistance are mainly "Marxist" but apparently have some anarchists and other socialists (particularly independent often statist socialists) in their ranks.

Socialist Alternative exists in Melbourne and Sydney and I think Adelaide? Again a Marxist group, but most people around here will tell you to steer clear of them. (Directing you to either Socialist Alliance or one of the anarchist groups depending on what they feel like.)

Barricade Books (http://barricade.org.au/) is an anarchist group in Melbourne.
Jura Books (http://www.jura.org.au/) is in Sydney, another anarchist book shop.

There is a new group in Brisbane of anarchists etc. that do stuff. Direct Action Collective. There is a thread about them http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php...=ST&f=7&t=57521 (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=57521)

I don't know of any anarchist groups in Tasmania or WA, but check out the local environment groups, often there are anarchists (sometimes not self identifying as though) hanging around.

Universities are often a good place to find leftists. Food not Bombs is good as well (they exist in Sydney and Melbourne at least, I don't know about other cities), as well as environment centres and food co-ops. However, sometimes you only find the Green sort rather then the radical or deep green sort. Unfortunate that.

Indymedia exists in a variety of places, I'll leave it to you to find out.

There is a group in Canberra called Treason (http://treason.metadns.cx/).

The Australian Student Environment Network (http://www.asen.org) has a lot of anarchists in it. They also have lots of news around protests and stuff.

Fight dem Back (http://www.fightdemback.org/) is a good anti-racist organisation, they exist on both sides of the Tasman.

This thread http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php...=ST&f=7&t=57501 (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=57501) has some more information that might be useful, particularly for Melbourne.
This thread http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=31615 has lots of different political organisations from around the world, including Australia and New Zealand.
This thread http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=49390 has stuff happening in Sydney (when it is updated anyway).

I know a guy from Brisbane, Australia, but he is part of a meritocratic organization, not a socialist one. He does tell me however that the socialist movement in Australia is slow and essentially useless. Indeed it seems only the large unions of Australia are going to be the main defense for worker's rights against the newly reelected Howard government, a man that can be compared to Thatcher and Reagan in terms of policy.

Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP-CDC)

Email dated: 16 August 2005
Subject: [resistance] Condoleeza Rice coming to Adelaide

Condoleeza Rice and possibly Donald Rumsfeld in Adelaide

Yes You read it right, Condoleeza Rice will be in Adelaide in November. Possibly Donald Rumsfeld too!

The occasion? The inaugural meeting for the "Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate" (APP-CDC). The six nation group of green house polluters is really a club of the two worst environmental vandals in the world (Australia and the USA) with 4 lesser polluters (China, India, South Korea and Taiwan) to rip up the Kyoto protocol.

Australia in recent years has lead the charge to junk the Kyoto protocol of reducing greenhouse emissions and the US has followed the lead of Australian big polluters. The APP-CDC proposes no limitation on greenhouse pollution, just the vague promise to introduce environmentally friendly technology to the third world but no targets or enforceability for this. APP-CDC is really just a smoke-screen or a stunt to cover up Australia and US corporate and environmental vandalism that is wrecking our planet and killing its people.

It is now universally recognised that the greenhouse effect is a deadly serious and worsening environmental disaster. According to the most comprehensive survey ever carried out on global warming (published in The Australian earlier this year), earth's temperatures are changing much faster than expected. The survey warned London could be under water within 50 years. The future of the world's island nations and agricultural societies will be most dramatically affected. While the rich will always be able to buy up the best land, and make money from any crisis, environmental vandalism is destroying the planet and majority of the people.

The powers that be have picked Adelaide hoping that we are small and passive enough to offer no resistance to there meeting. The polluters want to make this an international media coup for their irresponsible head in the sand approach to out of control climate change. We need to make this an international public relations disaster for them! The challenge is on. if there was ever a time to get active it is now.

Top 6 reasons to make make Rice's visit a PR disaster

1. Green House effect is a dangerous runaway environmental disaster. The corporate poulluters are simply ignoring this fact.
2. Condoleeza Rice was the national security adviser during the Iraq invasion that has lead to death of 100 000 Iraqi civilians in the name of ridding the world of Sadam Hussien's fictional "weapons of mass destruction".
3. Howard will be there, Downer will be there, all the Australian government big wigs willl be trying to soak up some of the "glory" while the whole world will be watching on the international media. We can show the world what we really think.
4. The occupation of Iraq is losing its grip. The opposition to US imperialism in Iraq and all around the world, especially in Latin America, is gaining strength. a show of popular opposition to this meeting of the imperialists in their heartland, the safe tranquil Adelaide, will encourage international Resistance and struggle.
5. This will be the biggest political event for Adelaide since the invasion of Iraq. The chance to trigger greater inviolvement in struggle against our own bankrupt government is massive.
6. There will be a national convergance on Adelaide for the summit with people from accross the country coming to join the protest.
7. We have a world to win. We have nothing to lose. The power lies with the majority of people. We must fight for new world based on humn need not corporate greed.

NOWAR Adelaide (the group that organised the massive demonstrations against the invasion of Iraq) has called for action against Rice's visit. NOWAR has innitiated coalition , open to all groups and individuals who would like to help organise the protest.

Nelson backs out again as students protest
By Justin Norrie
September 28, 2005 - 11:05AM

For the second time in a month the federal Education Minister, Brendan Nelson, has backed out of a university speaking engagement, citing concerns for his safety.

Dr Nelson was en route to an education conference at the University of Sydney this morning when his minders informed him by telephone that about 60 students had gathered to protest against the Government's proposed voluntary student unionism legislation.

Dr Nelson immediately cancelled his appearance and turned back.

"The Australian Federal Police have advised us that it is not safe for Brendan to be here, so he has had to cancel unfortunately," a spokeswoman for Dr Nelson said.

Last month, Dr Nelson cancelled an appearance at the University of Technology because it coincided with a student protest against voluntary student unionism, which police considered likely to pose dangers.

In the same week, Health Minister Tony Abbott cancelled a voluntary student unionism debate with Labor's Julia Gillard at Sydney University, after NSW Police refused to guarantee his safety from protesting students.
AdvertisementAdvertisement

Just before 9am today, about 60 students linked arms, blocking entry to the University of Sydney's Merewether Building, where the Australia and New Zealand School of Government was due to hold a conference "Schooling for the 21st Century".

The students repeatedly chanted: "VSU: no way" and "No VSU, not now not ever. Students are stronger standing together."

Conference delegate Seamus O'Grady was knocked to the ground while trying to enter the building.

Mr O'Grady, the Catholic Education Office's director of religious education and curriculum, was unhurt.

"I know it's grand final week, but I didn't expect that I would get crash-tackled at an education conference," he said . "They said that it was me who assaulted them."

About 15 police and a handful of security guards tried to break up the protest.

Conference organiser Peter Debus said: "Security people had a meeting last night and they said there would only be 15 protesters here. I don't know what happened."

Rose Jackson, president of the university's Student Representative Council, said: "I'm really surprised that there was such a small police presence. Previous police response has been really aggressive and heavy-handed. We told them there would be a couple of dozen protesters here. We warned them."

The former head of the consumer watchdog, Allan Fels, stepped in to open the conference after Dr Nelson's cancellation.

"It's just a real shame that the students won't let [Dr Nelson] in here to express his point of view," Mr Fels said. "It tends to go against all of their own arguments about freedom of speech."

The protest ended about 10am.

AAP reports: Dr Nelson told reporters that police told him up to 50 protesters had occupied the building where he was to give his speech.
He said it was clear that under no circumstances would the protesters allow him to open the conference.

"Unfortunately these people, I'm advised by police, had occupied the building (and were) some of the hardest core demonstrators that police frequently encounter," he said.

Dr Nelson said he would post the speech he planned to give at the conference on the education department website.

"We are absolutely determined to drive school reform in Australia to international standards.

"I think it's unfortunate we live in a country where it seems you've got to have hundreds of police just so you can go about doing your job," he said.

For the second time in a month the federal Education Minister, Brendan Nelson, has backed out of a university speaking engagement, citing concerns for his safety.

Dr Nelson was en route to an education conference at the University of Sydney this morning when his minders informed him by telephone that about 60 students had gathered to protest against the Government's proposed voluntary student unionism legislation.
...

How do you reconcile denying free speech with your leftism? Would it not be more democratic to defeat Nelson in debate?

Since Scott Parkin is a non-violent activist, I am not sure he would appreciate you smashing the state to free him.

Dissent Isn't Taken Lightly Down Under
By Scott Parkin
5 October 2005

WASHINGTON, October 5 (HalliburtonWatch.org) -- Historian Michael Foley said during times of war pacifists often get mugged. As a non-violent activist working to end the war in Iraq and the corporate war profiteering that comes with it, September 2005 has been the most surreal time of my life and I definitely feel like I got mugged by Australian Attorney General Phillip Ruddock and the Australian government.

After three lovely months of traveling through Australia and meeting people, one Wednesday afternoon during the second week of September I was called by the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, or ASIO, and asked to come in for an interview. I asked if I was required to do so and the woman at the other end of the phone said "No, you are not obliged too." I then asked if this would affect the remaining two weeks of my time in Australia and she said she couldn't say. I should have listened with closer attention to that non-answer.

A few days later, walking out of a café in Melbourne, I was snatched off the street by 4 Australian Federal Police and 2 Immigration Compliant Officers. They informed me I was being placed into "questioning detention" so that the Department of Immigration could assess if they were going to cancel my tourist visa or not. In truth, "a competent Australian authority" had already assessed me to be a "direct or indirect risk to Australian national security", cancelled my visa and began the process of removing me from the country (which would end up costing me $11,000 Australian dollars). By that evening, I was in solitary confinement at the Melbourne Custody Center, a maximum security lock-up awaiting that not-so free ride home. In addition, that evening, a media firestorm erupted in Australia and I became the center of debate over free speech and the criminalization of dissent in Australia.

I spent a good part of July and August doing workshops on our Houston based campaign to get Halliburton out of Iraq, people powered strategies to end the illegal occupation of Iraq and non-violent action. The Halliburton talks discussed the company's history of corruption and cronyism in Iraq, tactics and strategies used by community organizers in Houston (and elsewhere) to pressure Halliburton out of Iraq and the campaign in the larger context of the American anti-war movement. The people power strategies workshop is an approach to social action that addresses immediate community priorities, builds power by mobilizing citizens, is framed by core 'citizen values' and challenges structural inequalities. It imparts on participants methods to craft a clear strategy in working for social change. The non-violent action workshops were facilitated them in the tradition of Thoreau, Gandhi, King and countless other advocates for non-violent social change.

I facilitated these trainings at the Brisbane Social Forum, the Sydney Social Forum and Subplot, a forum for autonomous and student activists. The latter two venues were precursors for 2 days of protests against the Forbes Global CEO Conference at the Sydney Opera House.

During those 2 days of protests, I also organized a protest outside the Sydney offices of war profiteer Halliburton's subsidiary KBR. It was a political theater event where my cohorts and I dressed up as billionaires, named ourselves "The Coalition of the Billing" and chanted such insurrectionary chants as "1-2-3-4, we make money when there's war, 5-6-7-8, KBR's really great!" and "We're here, we're rich, get used to it!". It was a fun little protest and many of the New South Wales police watching were laughing along with our comedy routine. I can only guess that Phillip Ruddock and ASIO missed the underlying humor.

While they may currently hold all the legal cards, they are losing the public debate as lawyers, civil libertarians, environmentalists; former government whistleblowers, grassroots activists, major media outlets and some politicians have spoken out and acted on this baffling outrageous episode. Currently, their best response has been that I "incited spirited protest". All over Australia, local communities have mobilized and rallied around my detention and removal. There have been numerous NON-VIOLENT protests, occupations and direct communications all over Australia, and in the United States, confronting Prime Minister John Howard, Phillip Ruddock and the Australian government about their shabby handling of me and my civil rights. Major Australian media outlets have questioned daily why their government has acted in such a manner. This doesn't even include the outpouring of support I have read from people all over the world fed up with this type of behavior from "liberal western democracies" seeking to restrict and criminalize dissent under the auspices of "national security" and the "war on terror".

Since my departure from Australia, an article appeared in The Australian --a Rupert Murdoch owned newspaper with right wing leanings-- stating I had planned to teach violent protest tactics. Apparently, anonymous government sources informed reporters at The Australian that I would be discussing how to throw marbles under police horse hooves, how to spring protestors from custody and how to isolate police during marches and surround them. These charges are completely ludicrous. I am completely opposed to any actions that would harm police animals or officers. I have publicly stated during workshops previous to this entire episode that tactics such as this are not a good idea and lead to things like "assault on a police officer". I am philosophically and practically opposed to the use of such tactics. These are the same sort of stories put out by American authorities and right wing media about non-violent protestors since the 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization in Seattle.

Bob Dylan once alleged to live outside the law you must be honest. I have been known to live outside the law from time to time and it has given me a degree of self-realization and honesty which I apply to my activism. I realize that while my actions are not necessarily the norm in today's world, they are dictated by conscience or as Thoreau once said "The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies…… A very few--as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men--serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it." After the backlash I have seen against the Australian government's treatment of me, I can honestly say the Australian people are on the right track to serving their country with their consciences.

what has your country won lately?

The cricket, the ICC Super Series versus the World XI, and at the moment the test series against the West Indies.

I just checked recent inter. rugby results, oz havent won since july!
I am a big fan of the ABs' though, i watched some of the NPC when i was in Aotearoa the past 5 months, supporting Auckland :D The ABs are probably the most exciting team around at the moment, and they've got sooooo much depth.

Some interesting stuff i found, these are good results for international rugby

Argentina beat Scotland 23-19 last saturday! :)
Wales only just beat Fiji, 10-11- what an upset that would have been!
And Argentina also had a good showing against South Africa, going down 34-23.

-some inter. cricket results, Pakistan A beat England by 6 wickets! Damn i love reading about the poms getting done in cricket

-and finally this,

Uruguay forward Alvaro Recoba believes his country deserves a World Cup place more than Australia.

He said: "We're a big country with a big past and we've got a right to play. Uruguay has a divine right to play. Uruguay is Uruguay."

That makes no sense, but Uruguay does deserve the spot more, i think they're obviously the better team- but last time they beat Australia to get their spot in the WC they performed horrible in the finals, and (i think) came last in their group, meh. If only oz' best forwards weren't plagued with injuries, i.e. kewell and viduka.

rugby aside for moment - i have made my triumphant return to new zealand, and find myself in auckland as of two days ago. i'm still a little jet lagged and my partner and i have less than $250 left between us, so i wont be doing much for a while, but send me a pm if you're in the area.

i had a job interview this morning - should that come thru we'll be staying here for a long whiles, should it not, i do not know. as i said, my body is, despite all evidence to the contary, under the distinct impression that it is currently about 5am, so i'm not overly confident that the interview went well. fingers crossed.

oi chebol - come say hi. i'll be wearing a mask. hopefully not too many others will be so it will be a simple game of trial and error ;)

ye, the supreme court shit - shit. i can't believe the cops made their intentions so explicit. they called the src up and basically said, 'if you have a sit-down in railway square we will do what it takes to push you off the road.. and then some of you will react and we'll arrest those who do.'

i told my non-political friends and it scared the hell out of even them. ahhh it sucks but might help to radicalise em ;)

but now the sitdown has been moved to the front of uts. which is shit, but if we try to do it at railway square anyway then people will get arrested. which is fine if people wanna put themselves in that position, but the thing is that the two education officers who went to the supreme court yesterday will be arrested for contempt of court. so, for solidarity's sake, it's prolly best we do what the court says. as much as it pains me to say that.

April 12, 2006 - 4:07PM

Students who staged a sit-in at one of Sydney's busiest intersections as part of a national protest against the Federal Government's higher education policy have been arrested.

Several demonstrators were arrested after a group of about 50 students sat down in the middle of the intersection at Railway Square, near Central Station, and refused to move.

One female student fell to the ground and hit her head on the road during a scuffle with police.

A heavy police presence is surrounding the protest which numbers about 400 and has caused traffic chaos in the city.

Students from several Sydney universities gathered at the University of Technology Sydney at 1.15pm (AEDT) before beginning their protest march through the city.

The Sydney protest is part of a National Day of Action against voluntary student unionism and student poverty issues including Youth Allowance rates and GST on text books.

The new VSU laws mean that from July 1 compulsory student union fees will be banned.

They also want the Youth Allowance increased to at least the poverty line, a decrease in the age of independence to 18 and rent assistance eligibility for Austudy recipients. They are also calling for the abolition of GST on textbooks.

They won the right to demonstrate after the NSW Supreme Court yesterday rejected a police application to prevent the rally going ahead.

A NSW police spokesman later confirmed 24 protesters had been arrested at the scene.

They were being questioned at Surry Hills, Redfern and Newtown police stations.

At a rally at UTS, National Union of Students (NUS) NSW president Max Bryant labelled the heavy police presence "ridiculous".

"They've pulled out about 300 police here, it's just insane," he said.

"I've seen worse particularly at refugee [protests], but definitely for the young first-year students and the high school kids, it's intimidating."

But Mr Bryant said he was thrilled by today's turnout.

"This is just the beginning and it's very encouraging to see almost 500 people here today."

Seriously though.. It would be better if it wasn't so focused on environmentalism, I'm not enough of an active environmentalist to make it worth my while.

Isn't that the whole focus of SOS though? Whatever the case, it'll be very hard to wrestle the focus away from enviro-stuff simply because of the people the event usually attracts.

armedpoet

Both qc and ed con were in Perth last year, myself and Ray joined in the ed con's blockade of Brendan Nelson. What fun that was!

Ah yeah I almost forgot! I didn't go to either con but that was a damn good week.

I got to spit on Nelson!

Autonarcon! January 29th 2006 - City Farm - Perth WA - an
anarchist/autonomous activist gathering.

This was also found posted in December. Did anyone go?

I helped organise it.

It was pretty damn good - about 50 people, lots of discussions, food, music etc.

We had planned to do it every few months but we haven't got around to organising another one. We do have monthly activist picnics in Hyde Park though.

Also the few of us that organised it have been pretty busy with black dove and other activista stuff.

Perth is going off! :)

Wikid! You made it! next time you're on msn, tell me all about it. I saw a few pics and it looked really cool!

I put my email on that anarcon list a while back, that's how I know what I already know. And I just missed out on that anarcho con in Perth too...

... come to our SMASH THE STATE PARTY!!!!!

in sydney park, st peters, on the 7th of may 2006 at 1pm will be the first annual smash the state party. in the spirit of may day we will be erecting a NSW pinyata, and VICTORIA pinyata etc, and for a buck or two, you can take a swing at the state...

providing the tunes for the day will be VAE VICTUS, SAY CHEESE AND DIE!. THE SUBVERTS, UNATTENDED BAGGAGE!

do you believe that water is more precious than gold?
do you believe that aboriginal sovereignty is more important than a canadian mining company's profit margin?
the money raised willl go to the lake cowal campaign...

Link for pics (http://www.moz.net.nz/photo/2006/05/07-smash-the-state/)

I wish I went to Sydney for it...

To give away!
One mobile phone SIM card. Has over $40 of credit + free minutes. Virgin is the company.

I won't be using it, don't want the credit to expire, so want to give it to some cool Australian. PM me for more details or to lay claim to it. Conditions apply. Prettiest applicant might get it.
Smash the state.

ALSO! I got a letter in the mail today asking me why I didn't vote in the last State election. Took them long enough (election was in March). My reason? Fuck the state!
Maybe next time vote but write something on the paper in big red letters.
