That was a chant we did at the recent protest I went to.
My friend snorted however, and said that pulling out now would be horrible because it would only encourage civil war.
I can kind of see the possibility for a lot of sectarian feuds there.
But we can't just stay there either can we?
Whats the solution here?

It's either americans killing Iraqis or Iraqis killing Iraqis. The only question is, who is worse?
Look, no one claims that if the US pulled out tomorrow, Iraq would be peaceful and free. Hardly, at this point a civil war is pretty much inevitable.
But, if a new dictatorship is set up (probably a theocratic one), it will be a local one and, in time, the people of Iraq will be able to defeat that government. Much like how they would have defeated the government of Hussein had it not been for the United Nations Sanctions. Eventually, a bouregois republican state will be set up, like it looks will soon happen in Iran.
As long as the US rules Iraq, however, there is no chance for that happening, Whereas local democratic forces could fight a government in Baghdad, they have no chance of defeating the one in Washington. As it stands, all that resistance can do is kill American troops in a limited guerrila fashion. The occupational state simply has too much backing (read: lots of American tanks) to be beatable ...unless the US can be forced to leave due to political pressures.
The US pulling out gives Iraqis the ability to make their own future without a superpower there to force their hand.
Yes the unconditional withdrawal of troops, regardless of consequence, is the only thing that we should be calling for.
Who are our governments to tell the Iraqi's how to run their country? We have no right to keep occupying troops in the country because 'the Iraqi's will mess things up.'
The main argument against the war was that we are not the world's police force, and therefore it is not up to us to determine how other country's are run - this still applies today.
While capitalism and the ruling classes still exist, these sortr of problems will never have 'nice' solutions - its in the interests of these classes to create divisions in the working class along any grounds they can find, and the American troops have been doing this along sectarian religous grounds for the past two years.
They have used 'divide and rule' to cause these problems should they leave.
