What is COINTELPRO?

What exactly are the COINTELPRO documents? I have tried Google Searching it but I find not much useful information, could someone here explain this to me?

COINTEL PRO was a system used by the FBI to monitor and subvert those deemed dangerous to the state by the uS government during the 60's and 70's. It was used widely against groups like the black panthers and American Indian movement. University of Colorado Proffesor Ward Churchill wrote a great book on the subject.

Was it ever put into use or was it just an idea?

It was put to use. It was used to imprison many dissident leaders, most notably Mumia Abu Jamal and Leonard Peltier

The FBI Director John Edgar Hoover started this program, and actually, I assume your name Rage must mean you're a fan of Rage Against the Machine, right? If you listen to the song Wake Up, far into the song you can hear Zack's voice quoting the official goal of COINTELPRO.

The FBI admitted to 92 burglaries between the years of 1960 to 1966 through this program. Some of the more notorious acts COINTELPRO committed was the assassination of Chicago Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, the FBI sent an anonymous letter to MLK suggesting he committ suicide, and pretty much the assassination of Malcolm X. The assassination of X is mentioned in Wake Up also, Zack yells "Then they murdered X, and tried to blame it on Islam!"

Anarchist Yippie Abbie Hoffman spoke out much about COINTELPRO, you ever seen the movie "Steal this Movie"? Or hell, have you ever read his book Steal this Book? I think it'd be awesome, but people say it's outdated now. Well, I'd suggest researching on Wikipedia and then read the book Guerilla22 recommended by Ward Churchill, "Agents of Repression: The FBI's secret wars against the BPP and AIM".
