A Canadian television program selected Tommy Douglas, and social democrat as their greatest Canadian. I agree in full with this choice. What was unique about him was a few things. He lead North America's first "Socialist" government. Most of you would probably argue he wasn't enough of a socialist. He was also a baptist preacher. He took in Jesus's teachings as (we are all equal, we must take down the powerful, and pick up the oppressed) Is a social democrat like Tommy Douglas not a model leader of socialism?

A social democrat? Why not an actual communist?

yeah, thats gonna expand the list a whole lot wider.
The only good Canadian Communist I can think of is a Union leader during the Great Depression named Arthur Evans.
He organized and led the On-to-Ottawa Trek which ended by being brutally suppressed by the government.

So he's bad. I think this should be in "Learning" as I obviosly have a lot to learn about Communism.

Well Tommy Douglas is the closest thing Canada has had to a great socialist leader, and it doesn't look like were going to get another one soon.

Evans was a determined comrade with great organizational skills. However it was too difficult to shake the government, especially under a ruthless brute like Prime Minister Borden.

Borden was terrible. I was reffering to tommy douglas when I said "he's bad". And by that, I meant he's bad in the communist view because he was capable of creating social programs that served the people, not an idea.

Oh I dont have a problem with social democrats---if they are indeed social democrats.
" I meant he's bad in the communist view because he was capable of creating social programs that served the people"
?
what do u mean?
Traditionally Marxists hate social democrats cause we dont think there can be a compromising ground between capitalism and communism. and that by giving workers tiny bits of advantages alters their revolutionary spirit.
However I dont have a problem with them as long as they can serve the people to the greatest extend by doing serious damage to the free market economy.

Oh I was being rude and sarcastic. Well, my problem with marxists became apparent on these boards. Most seem to believe in killing all other ideologies, and essentially turning people into marx-quoting drones in order to create equality. I hate the free market system more than Marxism, but Marxism, or atleast it's popular interpretation, seems too Authoritarian for my liking.

U've got alot to learn. Start from this quote:
"democracy is the road to socialism" ----Karl Marx

What, then, if our fellow workers democratically decide against communism? ;)
Anyways, he's an awesome guy. If Canada got another one of him involved in politics, I would seriously consider a move there.

Then the 'communists' in that society would pretty poor indeed! It makes no sense for workers to 'democratically' decide to be exploited rather than 'democratically' decide to control their own lives.
