Workers fired over union links claims CWU

03 June 2005 16:43

The Communications Workers' Union has alleged that two shop stewards at Smart Telecom have been fired because of their involvement in the union.

The union has been seeking to represent a number of members at Smart Telecom in relation to issues including pay rates.

However, the company does not recognise unions.

Last week, the CWU referred the stewards' complaints to the Labour Relations Commission under new legislation which allows the Labour Court to issue a finding on specific issues which can then be enforced by the Circuit Court.

The CWU says that this morning, two shop stewards based in Limerick were made redundant with no prior consultation or justification.

A spokesperson for Smart Telecom said that the company had been reviewing their payphone operation for eight months, in light of an industry trend to outsource payphone services.

He said Smart Telecom was closing two depots in Limerick and Belfast, and that it now only had 15 employees in its payphone division.

The spokesperson said that he understood that a number of employees had sought union representation.

He said the company had written to the Labour Relations Commission on Thursday undertaking to address the issue with employees within four weeks.
