Cheddi Jagan accompanied the 'rush' of Marxist leaders that encompassed many countries in South America during the 50s and 60s. He was a very inspirational leader, and wrote books such as 'The West on Trial', and others that heavily criticized the practices of America upon naturally rich countries such as Guyana.

He also received much medical care from Cuba under Castro's regime. Castro and Jagan were close friends, and Che Guevara was said to meet with him many times, but there are no pictures of the two together.

Jagan was an Atheist and passed away in 1997.
