Bill O'Reilly is the American version of Goebbels (sp?). If you watch Fox News, it's simply terrifying at the level of right-wing propaganda on the channel. It makes you feel like you are living in a fascist police state.

:D u forgot to meantion CNN. That news agency makes more sense if u watch it standing up-side-down on ur head.

The media is an tool to manipulate the people, controlled by corporations whose interest lies within a authoritarian government that justifies exploitation.

Democracy will NEVER be achieved if the media is owned by corporations. How are the Americans people supposed to make the right decision when they are not given information and facts regarding different issues? When even the coffin of soilders arent allowed to be broadcast on TV, how are the American people gonna realize the atrocities committed under their names?

   You called it news! That's adorable! But seriously, I turn on Faux News when I'm in need of a good laugh. Also, has anyone noticed that the vast majority of the channel's airtime is dedicated to the weather?

Im glad someones made a topic about it. As you may see from my posts im passionately against the media lol. I hope this topic grows in interest and importance. This subject affects every human in the western world; if its not television then its radio, billboards, advertising, newspapers and magazines.

We must confront this issue with practicality and vision to save the masses from this disease.

Do chara de geo.

Its not just corporation run media that is biased, I would go as far to say that there is no such thing as unbiased media.
Take the BBC in the UK - despite the regular government interferance (it is funded by taxes) it is basically and ideologically independant from the government, and as there are no commercials, it is independant from companies too. However, this does not mean that it is any way unbiased or independant. It, like any other news agency, is highly biased in favour of capitalism, and lets us know every day.
On the other end, the news agencies that claim to be independant, despite their noble attempts, can not be. it all depends on the journalist's class outlook on the world, and that is incorporated into what they report on.
I have yet to see a completely unbiased news agency, so I say - why bother?
Our class outlook on the world is 'right,' so why not incorporate that into our news? :P

It's a widely accepted fact that most mainstream news outlets in north america and most countries in western societies are mere platforms to the governments in which they serve...

Despite some criticism they may give of the government, they are above all that, an outlet for that government...

I dream of a day where true left leaning news services pop up here and there...

That'll be a true example of free speech.....

In the meantime, read as much bullshit as you can to truly be able to know what's going on in the world, and become more able to critize what's going on.

Despite that ugly fucked up fact that news is propaganda, its necessary to some extent to get informed of the world that surrounds us.

But question everything.

I used to trust "objective" sources - those that weren't blatantly one-sided propaganda like Fox ("Outfoxed" the documentary sees right through that station's b.s.). However, I've come to realize all news is distorted and there is no such thing as an unbiased paper. I'm wary of both outlandish rightists talk-show "news" and rightist media as well as bourgeois leftist news (which stops short of class consciousness and upholds things like capitalist "law"). I am coming to the conclusion that the most trustworthy news is that of the socialists and locals of a certain area (for instance, Jim Shultz successfully shows the true nature of Bolivians at www.democracyctr.org , and has recently criticized even the centrist media).

Hehe... He said news and FOX in the same sentence.. Hehe..

Okay, back to reality

Anyway, most corporate media in the United States is propaganda. Most of it - if not all of it - is engineered to either keep us afraid 24/7 so the massive corporations can pump us with ideas to buy defensive items; or its played to keep our mind off of the horrible things happening in this (USA) country.

The Roman Empire called that 'bread and circus'.

I don't know how much you could discuss it, I mean everyone here seems to already know this. And yes, FOX news, much like every other news station in America is pro capitalist propaganda.

Any source whatsoever runs the risk of presenting bias. By analyzing only the particular aspects of a subject or by citing non-credible information any source runs the risk of being subjective. News, history, etc. constantly looks different when viewed from a different perspective, or a different interpretation based on the facts and information (or misinformation) that it has presented.

It is safe to say that the majority of information outlets are controlled by the ruling class, thus their viewpoint is the most widely propagated and others are swayed by their views, directly connected to them or not. Also consider that media in general usually reports statements made by high ranking government and business leaders, so by reporting their statements they are spreading, willing or not, their message.

I agree, listen to NPR and PBS, that is untill the Bush administration infiltrates their ranks as well. Which they are currently doing.

Truth is you can't rid the world of feeling, bias has, is , and will always exist. Unless you have a monotone reader taht just reads facts, and is on a 1984 teltescreen...hmm....good idea!

 ever heard the saying "control the media, control the minds"? it totally propoganda, and though i do hate this, dont blame capitalism, stalin LOVED this method. (so did hitler) so now we have George w bush, stalin, and hitler. what pleasent company bush is in. i always get the nagging feeling that he's gonna declare dictatorship or something, simply because of the fact that america is basicly an empire.

The worst propaganda is MTV. MTV controls the youth, and the youth have no minds of their own. There is a good quote from School of Rock, it goes something like this "We used to have something to fight the man, and it was called rock and roll. But the man destroyed that with MTV."

MTV killed any chance of another era of socially active youth like the one that happened in the 60s and 70s.

I agree, that Dead Kennedys song MTV Get Off the Air was great too.

Honestly though, all new sources are propaganda and bias in one way or the other. Some just more than others.
