The Soviet Union set up nucelar missiles in Cuba to counterballance the US misiles in Western Europe and Turkey.
Castro agreed because he desperately neede Soviet support and wasn't going to turn down military aid!
In the end, Kennedy (despite virtually sabotaging every effort at negotiation and generally acting like a twit) and Khruschev managed to work out a deal such that the missiles were removed in exchange for the US taking out her Juppiter missiles from Turkey and pledging never to invade Cuba again, a promise which they've actually kept! :o
