Socialism is the democratic management of the workplace, the end of exploitation by the bourgeoisie, abolition of private property, and the abolition of money.
A state is not necessary for such to happen and socialist societies would presumably have low taxes at first and then eventually none as money would just disapear.

Structural unemployment in modern society can have serious implications even in wealthy nations. This is because competition means that when a town that specialises in a certain type of labour (for example auto manufacture) becomes uncompetitive (expensive) jobs are cut, the money moves out, and LAND and LABOUR is left to waste, as adjustment takes time and CAPITAL (the capital that has just fucked off to a sweatshop out east). In short by having a managed economy efficiency is raised. A lack of competition is not important, all that means s that the lowest bidder gets the contract. School meals prove how effective that has been.

What if I told you insane was working fifty hours a week in some factory for fifty years at the end of which they tell you to piss off; ending up in some retirement village hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time? Wouldn't you consider that to be insane?
That's the cruelty done by capitalism.

I get so confused of the difference inbetween Communism and Socialism someone. Can anyone save me!? And everyone else who would probably ask - I do think there's atleast SOME confusion surroundin' 'ris, no? :P
Capitalism is is essentially private property. It allows small groups of people to monopolize resources, and is therefore exploitive.
It also has the inane notion that things can or should be owned by people.
I think the sheer inequalities within Capitalism should be enough to turn anyone off this oppressive political system, sadly some don't see the explotation of each and every worker on this planet; and others just choose to accept it because they are told it is: In their best interest, If you believe that you'll believe anything.
Socialism is a society that believes in deep ethics and deep values.
Why should I work 47.5 hrs a week, and, for everyone of those hours my boss makes between £15-£20 on my labour? Why should my labour be de-valued in this way and become a commodity? Short answer: I shouldn't, it shouldn't!!

The biggest difference I can see between Socialism and Communism is that in a Socialist society, there is still a state - it can be a Socialist country, and so on. In Communism, there is no state - thus Communism can not exist in one country.
As for competition - competition wastes huge amounts of resources and time, not to mention the abilities of men and women go to waste to compete instead of cooperating. Corporations pay billions just to compete with another company (that competition can be seen in the capitalist propaganda known to us as "commercials", as one example).

i'm not sure you wouldn't pay taxes in a socialist society. in a communist society would do away with wages and money , so therefor no taxes but in a socialist society? a good question!!
here in scotland me are fighting to change the tax system to a more progressive one. the taxes we pay (not out of your wages) we want to change so that it reflects your ability to pay - make the rich pay more tax and the poor pay minumum or no tax. but that is within the context of living in a capitalist society.
i'll have to think about that one !!
cheers
