View Full Version : A new name for America?

If we succeed in a revolution in the U.S. or if a left-wing government is elected, do you think we should change our name? Calling ourselves "americans" might be offensive to others who live on the continent of the Americas. It would be like Germany suddenly started calling themselves "United States of Europe" and "Europeans" and nobody else in Europe could call themselves that.
if the name is changed, what do you think it should be called?
I like the name Usonia, and the adjective Usonian. Usonian was thought up by an architect called Frank Lloyd Wright.
The rest of the proposed names I don't like, such as Unitedstatesian, which is weird-looking.

I'm rather hopeful that "after the revolution" we will dismantle the United States altogether. With independence for regions, states, and even large cities, the names for people from those places would derive from their new or traditional names.
"America" would strictly refer to the western hemisphere: North, Central, or South.
Many people, by the way, now think that nomenclature is "trivial", but I definitely do not. I think many names of many places will be changed in the U.S. and in many parts of the world to reflect the "new world" of communism.

I agree, after the revolution (if their is one) we hopefully won't keep the same borders or have any borders at all. It is far too late for it to mean anything to its people, but we could name the country somethong indigenous, like many of the state names.

I am actuall in total agreement, possible autonomous regions for groups such as New York City, Chicago, Washington, Mexico City, and for indegenous peoples, rural-industrial areas, the rural areas, Pacific coast, Atlantic coast, colder regions, and warmer regions.
It would also appeal to separatists. The californain separatists would be most pleased and join in the struggle.

No, we will still need a name for the North American continent.
I would suggest something like Northwest Pangea (After the supercontinent America was originally part of)

I think it should keep its name. I disagree that a name change would be positive. People should have a country(or a place) that they can identify themselves with, not make up another name whenever possible. Unless of course if we could change it back to what the natives named it. That would acually be the most politically correct thing.

I don't think we should have any sort of cultural bias in the new name - there are already too many different cultures present in America
I like the idea of renaming the entire world to 'Pangea' meaning 'All Earth' in Latin.
Then we can have NWP, North West Pangea (FKA north America), NCP, North Central Pangea (FKA Europe), NEP, North East Pangea (FKA Asia) SWP, South West Pangea (FKA South america), SCP, South Central Pangea (FKA Africa), SEP, South East Pangea (FKA Australasia & Indonesia)
Large islands should have names based on the nearest ocean, with a prefix culturally significant to the local area, for example Britain would be renamed Albion Atlanticus.
If scientists name areas of other planets in Latin, why not our own planet?

Miscegenatea, as in 'miscegenate'/'miscegenation', as in 'inter-racial' sex/marriage.

I agree the names aren't that important, we could just as easily use a number or some other form of non offensive name. If we did have to come up with a name though, I think it would be best to let the people vot on the name, because it will be the people's country.

We'd still need a name for the island. It would be better than saying you come from that big island off the north-east coast of that really knobbly continent above that upside-down L-shaped one in the middle of the world maps.

I do believe that he is just pointing that out. I think we should keep it as America seeing as its been that way for God knows how long. You realize that it would take far too long to get used to it. If anything just change the lettering around to Amerika as someone else suggested.

It is of course possible that America (that is, the United States) would expand its number of states, and statehood may even cross oceans. What if the Virgin Islands petitioned for statehood, or a slice of South America. Then you would genuinely have the United States of America, where all citizens would be "Americans".

You know, being an American, I think we should just have a TV series where you call in, text message your choice to the number below, or hop on the internet and vote for what you think America should be called. Lines are now open!
And a month before hand there will be loads of stupid commercials. "what will YOU call America"
Seriously, that kinda shit works well with us. I got this feeling that more of us participated in American Idol then in the presidential election. And alot of people came out to vote this time too...so...
damn, make a TV series, and you will see democracy at it's finest.
