THOM YORKE CAMPAIGNS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Thom Yorke has been in Parliament today (May 25) campaigning for climate change.

The singer is calling for thousands of people across the country to back The Big Ask, a campaign backed by Friends Of The Earth, to make the government responsible for reducing the UK impact on global warming.

As well as his political work, Radiohead are also working on a new album, the follow-up to 2003’s ’Hail To The Thief’.

The Fugees Eye Reunion

Hip-hop trio plots new record, more surprise performances

The Fugees -- Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras -- are plotting their first album since 1996's blockbuster The Score, according to rapper Pras. "We're working on it," he told Rolling Stone. "Clef and Lauryn's putting tracks together while I drop my solo album [June 14th's Win, Lose or Draw]."
In his New York studio, Fugees ringleader Wyclef was more guarded about the project, but allowed, "We've gone from not talking to having conversations. There's good vibes, good energies right now. I want the Fugee thing to happen -- because it's not just music, it's a movement."

A seminal Nineties hip-hop act, the Fugees broke ground with their fusion of hip-hop, R&B and reggae. Their second album, 1996's The Score, hit the top of the pop charts and went on to become the biggest-selling hip-hop record to date. Solo albums from each of the members followed -- most notably Hill's 1997 multi-Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill -- casting doubt on another Fugees release.

But after eight years apart, the trio put aside personal tensions to perform at comedian Dave Chappelle's surprise hip-hop Block Party event last September in Brooklyn. And Wyclef and Hill reunited again in March for a tsunami-relief benefit concert in Malaysia. Pras says more guerilla performances are in the works. "We're just gonna appear," he promises. "It's gonna be like, boom! The Fugees!"

Meanwhile, Wyclef is recording tracks for his next solo album, tentatively titled The Underrated Musician, while Hill has been at work on her long-delayed studio follow-up to Miseducation.

With Wyclef making a guest appearance on Win, Lose or Draw, Pras says that the bad feelings between him and his bandmates are history. "It's starting to feel good working with them," Pras says. "It's a great feeling."

NIN Bail On MTV Show

Band cancels Movie Awards performance over Bush backdrop

http://i.realone.com/assets/rn/img/1/8/2/9/7369281.jpg

Nine Inch Nails have cancelled their performance at the MTV Movie Awards because of a disagreement with the network over the band's use of a George W. Bush picture.
"Apparently the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me," frontman Trent Reznor posted on NIN's Web site Thursday.

The band was planning to perform its politically charged single "The Hand That Feeds" with the Bush image as a backdrop. The song features the lyrics, "Inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold . . . There's a price to be paid for the blood on which we dine/Justified in the name of the holy and the divine."

"While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement," said an MTV spokesperson. "When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards."

NIN's cancellation came two days after Motley Crue filed a lawsuit against NBC, charging the network with "governmentally pressured censorship" for barring the hard rock band from appearing on its late-night shows after singer Vince Neil used profanity on a live New Year's Eve broadcast of The Tonight Show.

MTV's parent company Viacom famously became a political lightning rod last year when the MTV-produced Super Bowl halftime show on the Viacom-owned CBS network culminated in the infamous baring of Janet Jackson's right breast. The Federal Communications Commission fined CBS a record $550,000 for the incident.

If the producers of the MTV Movie Awards are refraining from partisan political statements, they are hardly playing it clean, as Eminem will debut his bawdy new single, "Ass Like That," on the show. (The network has aired the video for rap star's anti-Bush song "Mosh.")

The Awards, which will also feature a performance by Mariah Carey, will be taped June 4th at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. MTV will air the show June 9th.

MORE PROOF BONO IS A WANKER
http://nme.co.uk/news/112504.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/U2_290305_M.jpg

Bono has declared the last POPE a “comedian” after the late pontiff famously manipulated the singer into giving him his sunglasses.

Talking to The Sunday Times about the world leaders he’s met including George W Bush, Russian President Putin and Tony Blair, the U2 singer recalled how the Catholic Leader Pope John Paul II made him part with his trademark glasses.

“He seemed to be starring at me,” Bono recalled of their meeting. “I wondered was it the fact I was wearing my blue fly-shades? So I took them off in case I was causing some offence.”

However it seems the frail Pope had other ideas. “When I was introduced to him he was still starring at them,” the singer added. “He kept looking at them in my hand so I offered them to him as a gift in return for the rosary he’d just given.”

At this point the U2 man received a lesson in showmanship.

“Not only did he put them on, he smiled the wickedest grin you could ever imagine,” said Bono. “He was a comedian. His sense of humour was completely intact… I thought ‘Wow! The Drop The Debt campaign will have the Pope in my glasses on the front page of every newspaper!’”

The U2 singer added that in his meetings he found George Bush to be “funny and quick-witted” while he described Putin as “an expert… he was meticulously turned out, not a nose hair out of place”, however he reserved his highest praise for his fellow rocks stars.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are extremely polite and well-mannered according to Bono, while he declared Bob Dylan “a very true person”.

“I think underneath all the so-called eccentricity, which I think is just a mask, there’s a very true person,” the U2 man said of Dylan. “He’s a good father with a moral compass, who can get lost at sea like everybody, but I think he’s very strong.”

LIAM GALLAGHER SAYS HE’LL WORK WITH BLOC PARTY
http://nme.co.uk/news/112503.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/OasisLiam2Reading2000_M.jpg

LIAM GALLAGHER has said he’ll record a song with BLOC PARTY.

Despite comparing the London’s band’s line-up to a panel of students on ‘University Challenge’, the Oasis frontman said he’ll work with Kele Okereke and co if they write meet his standards.

“I’d love to do a tune with Bloc Party,” Liam told Virgin Radio. “If they’ve got a song that’s good enough then I’m having it.”

Liam added that Bloc Party and the other bands he attacked, were justified to hit back at him recently.

“I am a music lover and they (the bands he’s attacked) have every right to slag my band off,” he explained. “I just put bands in their places. There are a load of bands I like and there is a load of bands I fucking detest because they are shit.”

The Oasis frontman, who’s new album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ is released tomorrow (May 30), also explained that he’s not really concerned about writing songs for his band.

“If I didn’t write another song again it wouldn’t bother me,” he said. “I get my kicks from singing more than sitting there doodling about with fucking lyrics.”

Liam added that he doesn’t believe he’s improving as a writer and often needs guitarist Gem's assistance.

“Gem helps me out a lot, I struggle with lyrics sometimes,” Liam explained. “I can’t find the words. The words I find hard ‘cos I’m fucking thick.”

STONE ROSES REUNION - RENI SPEAKS
http://nme.co.uk/news/112518.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/StoneRosesEarly_M.jpg

Former band members RENI and MANI further stoked the possibility of a STONE ROSES reunion while out in MANCHESTER on Saturday (May 28).

The duo went to watch The Coral’s Carling 24 show in Manchester together, and both confirmed they would be up for reforming their old band.

“Never say never, but it won’t be this year,” Reni told BBC Six Music. “I’m going to play with Mani, that’s a guaranteed – I’m writing songs for me and him.”

Although Mani had previously said The Stone Roses would only unite after Manchester City won the European Cup – ie never – he admitted that he would actually consider it, saying: "I'd love to me – just for the sheer joy of playing with this guy (Reni) again."

Despite their former bandmate Ian Brown also playing as part of the Manchester 24 hour event, neither Mani or Reni said they would be attending, but praised The Coral’s performance.

“I came ‘cos Mani told me there were some gigs on in town – cos Mani’s got his finger on the pulse,” explained Reni. “He brought me out to see The Coral – I didn’t think I’d like it because I hate a lot of young bands because they’re so crap, undisciplined and just a racket – but these boys are sweet. These boys know what they’re doing – they remind me of Strawberry Switchblade and ’Shampoo’ the movie."

The full Reni and Mani interview will be broadcast on Conrad Murray’s BBC GMR Manchester Music Show on June 1 between 7 and 10. See bbc.co.uk/manchester for details.

FUCKING HUGE NEWS - THE CURE CHANGE LINE-UP
http://nme.co.uk/news/112515.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/CureRobertSmith0500_M.jpg

The Cure have changed their line-up.

Two members of the band have left, bringing a decade old line-up to an end.

Guitarist Perry Bamonte and keyboard player Roger O’Donnell are no longer with the group, leaving singer Robert Smith, bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper.

A statement on the band’s official website thecure.com said: “Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell are no longer in the band. The forthcoming summer shows will be performed by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper... And others???”

The band’s first gig with their new line up will be at this year’s Benicassim Festival in Spain (August 5).

O’Donnell wrote a statement on his website rogerodonnell.com saying: “What is done is done however it happened. I was in a group and now I'm not ... Thanks to everyone who has emailed me, I will reply to you all and I wish The Cure all the success they deserve.”

A revolving door of musicians have backed Smith over the band’s 26-year career.

O’Donnell first played with The Cure between and 1987 and 1990 before being replaced with Bamonte - a roadie for the group.

Following the departure of Porl Thompson in 1993, Bamonte switched to lead guitar and ’O’Donnell returned to the band in 1995.

PETE DOHERTY - IN THE NEWS AGAIN; SOMETHING TO DO WITH POETRY
http://nme.co.uk/news/112512.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/BABYSHAMBLES_220205_M.jpg

Pete Doherty returned to his poetic roots appearing at the BURNS FESTIVAL this weekend (May 30).

Having played with Babyshambles at Homelands, Doherty jetted up to Ayr to take part in the event to mark influential Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Although Doherty was there to concentrate on his poetry, and began his appearance by putting his composition ‘East Of Eden’ to music, he played several of his songs including ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ and a cover of ‘I Fought The Law’ for the sold out crowd, The Sunday Herald reports.

The poetry event echoes one of Doherty’s first ever live performances, when aged 16 he went to Moscow to read poetry at a British Council event.

Although his musical contributions meant that the star’s performance at the Burns event wasn’t exactly a traditional reading, he was praised from former Fairground Attraction singer Eddi Reader, whose latest album is a collection of Burns’ songs.

“Doherty is a wordsmith in the tradition of Burns and the likes of Leonard Cohen,” she said. “Burns wrote his poems as a radical young man – about being dumped or just loving a bit of countryside – and it’s great that Doherty is showing other young men, who obviously feel the same emotions, that poetry can be really important at those times.”

MORRISSEY PULLS OUT OF ISLE OF WIGHT
http://nme.co.uk/news/112509.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/Morrissey_Reading_280804_M.jpg

Morrissey has pulled his appearance at this year’s NOKIA (fucking Nokia, fucking brand placement amongst art bullshit - Floyd) ISLE OF WIGHT festival.

According to the singer’s official website, he will not be appearing as planned on June 11 due to “the pressure of preparing the new album”.

A statement reads: “Morrissey will regrettably not be appearing at the Isle Of Wight Festival on the 11th of June as scheduled. The pressure of preparing the new album and losing his drummer earlier this month has made it impossible to do the gig without massively compromising both the gig and the album. Apologies to all the fans, the organisers and the people of the Isle Of Wight.”

It’s currently unclear what will happen to that slot on the festival line-up. Roxy Music were scheduled to appear second on the bill as “special guests".

COLDPLAY ALBUM LEAKS
http://nme.co.uk/news/112510.htm

Coldplay’s new album ’X&Y’ has leaked ahead of its June 6 release.

The band’s latest LP appeared on file-sharing sites yesterday (May 30), meaning that it is now freely available to download from the internet.

A band insider told NME.COM: “It’s a miracle it hasn’t leaked before now to be honest. It’s released in Japan before Europe and they’ve played the album on their official website coldplay.com. Most major albums leak a long time before release, this is just a few days.”

The band’s record label have been secretive about sending the album out prior to release. Promo copies of the album were sent to journalists under the pseudonym The Fir Trees.

Row over Morrissey IoW appearance
http://nme.co.uk/news/112520.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/MorrisseyGlast04_M.jpg

A row has broken out following the announcement that MORRISSEY has pulled out of this year’s ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL.

As reported by NME.COM, Morrissey’s official website Morrisseymusic.com claimed that the former Smiths frontman was unable to play his headlining slot due to recording commitments and the need break in a new drummer.

However, following this announcement several Morrissey fansites have published a statement purporting to be directly from Morrissey himself which contradicts the official line.

“I have not ever, at any time, agreed to play the Isle of Wight Festival,” reads the statement that appeared on Morrissey-solo.com.

The statement also claims that Morrissey is still working with his current drummer Deano, and that the star has no control over Morrisseymusic.com.

The validity of the statement’s source could not be immediately verified. Sanctuary would not confirm or deny that it was from Morrissey directly.

“We’ve worked closely with Morrissey over the last couple of years and out of respect to our artists we’re not going to comment any further,” a Sanctuary Group spokesperson explained.

He said: “If anyone is not going to come to our party – and it’s going to be one hell of a party – they can fuck right off.”

The singer then explained that the worldwide concerts will be “just the beginning” of the “long walk to justice.”

”These concerts are the starting point for ’The Long Walk To Justice’ - we will not tolerate the further pain of the poor while we have the financial means and moral means to prevent it,” he said. “The boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis. What we started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. What we do next is seriously, properly, historically and politically important.”

WARNING THIS IS HILARIOUS:
SLIPKNOT ACCUSED OF DEVIL WORSHIP
http://nme.co.uk/news/112528.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/slipknot_RS_M.jpg

SLIPKNOT have been accused of promoting devil worship by the GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH.

The church is urging organisers to cancel the band’s appearance at Athens’ Lykavitos theatre on Monday (June 6).

"Public institutions must do their duty and protect Greek citizens from any public event that promotes Satanism,” the church said.

In a statement, they added: “The members of the band have a shocking appearance, wearing black uniforms and masks that look like skulls."

Slipknot are currently on a world tour, which will hit Europe, Japan and the US.

THE STROKES FINISH NEW ALBUM
http://nme.co.uk/news/112530.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/Strokes_010904_M.jpg

THE STROKES have almost finished work on their third album – but it might not be out until January 2006.

The band are planning to release a single in the autumn, and play a handful of club dates across Europe around the same time, band manager Ryan Gentles has told the band’s mailing list.

The album, currently untitled, is being mixed by Andy Wallace, who has worked with the likes of Nirvana and Jeff Buckley.

He revealed: “I can tell you that there are 13 songs that are nearly fully completed, but we still have NOT mixed the album, so we'll continue into June and July with that. This is NOT to say that there will be 13 songs on the album....maybe there will, maybe there won't...some could be B-sides...we'll decide that when the recording is 100% done.”

The band are also looking into the possibility of playing in Japan, Australia and South America before the end of the year. US dates are likely in January.

JACKSON JURY SET TO BEGIN DELIBERATIONS
http://nme.co.uk/news/112529.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/MichaelJackson_310105_M.jpg

The jury in the MICHAEL JACKSON trial could start considering its verdict on Friday (June 3).

Judge Rodney Melville, who has been presiding over the three-month case, has started giving instructions to the panel of 12 so they can begin their deliberations.

"I want to get the case out late Friday," Melville told the Santa Barbara courtroom yesterday (May 31), BBC News reports.

The court is currently considering several technical matters so the jury and Jackson have not been present, but once these are concluded the jurors will return to hear closing statements from each side’s lawyers.

The jury will then have to consider the testimony of the 130 witnesses who were called during the trial as they make their decision.

Jackson denies ten charges, including child abuse and conspiracy to kidnap, but if convicted, faces up to 20 years in prison.

I thought Malkmus said that he wasn't going to go on tour this year, oh well. Are those his only concerts or are there more?

What's your opinion about his new album? I like his earlier solo albums, but I'd say that this new one is even better. He's maybe a bit more playful this time, which is a good thing. Even though he's making good music on his own, I still wouldn't mind a Pavement reunion :)

Raging Bull:

I haven't heard all of the new album but what I've heard I like. I rather his solo career to the Pavement stuff as well to be honest.

I assume there will be more shows thatn those listed.

For some reason J Mascis, Stephen Malkmus and Evan Dando all remind me heaps of each other musically. Hmm

FRANKIE POULLAIN: I WAS SACKED
http://nme.co.uk/news/112591.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/darkness5_230903_M.jpg

Former DARKNESS bassist FRANKIE POULLAIN has broken his silence.

Since Poullain’s departure from the group on March 23 neither side has discussed specifics. However, the bassist has now confirmed to NME.COM that he was in fact sacked.

"Against my wishes I have been forced out of the group,” he explained. “At Darkness HQ, where Justin and his partner (Darkness manager, Sue Whitehouse) reside, I have gradually been frozen out over a long period of time. The reason for this is not yet clear - certainly nothing to do with Justin's solo album which I think is a great idea. In any case it's inevitable the truth will come out in the end.”

The bassist, who vowed to return with his own project, added that work on The Darkness’ new album had been progressing well.

“On a more positive note, the second album is incredible,” he explained. “Co-written by Justin, Dan and myself, I'm convinced it is destined to be a huge success.”

Poullain also expressed his thanks to fans of the band for their recent support.

“I'd like to thank all Darkness fans from the bottom of my heart for the staggering amount of support and goodwill they have given me during both the band's five year adventure and, perhaps more importantly, in the last two weeks, which I have found pretty difficult,” he said. “They've given me the life I've always dreamed of, I am so grateful and I'll never forget them - I'll be back.”

RADIOHEAD SAY NO THANKS TO LIVE 8

RADIOHEAD turned down an offer to play at LIVE 8, it has emerged.

The band, who have been vocal on many of the global development issues that the shows are aiming to raise awareness about, were given the chance by organiser Bob Geldof, according to BBC News.

But guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s recent parenthood is among the reasons why the band were unable to take part.

Radiohead’s spokesman said: “They were asked but they can’t do it. Jonny is out of action because he and his wife have just had a baby and the rest of the band are spread out all over the place at that time.”

The UK leg of Live 8 takes place at London Hyde Park on July 2, and would-be audience members have until midnight on Sunday (June 12) to enter the text lottery for tickets.

JACK WHITE AND BRENDAN BENSON NAME SIDE PROJECT
http://nme.co.uk/news/112607.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/stripes_280804_M.jpg

BRENDAN BENSON and JACK WHITE have named the side project they’ve been working on together.

As revealed by NME.COM the pair have made Detroit’s “answer to ‘Nevermind’” and are now calling Raconteurs.

“We’ll probably be coming out with a new record next year,” White told Billboard. “We’re almost done with it. It’s something totally new for me – two songwriters working together. Dual vocals, dual lead guitars, dual songwriting duties.”

White added that it wasn’t just him and Benson creating the record, they now had a full band featuring Jack Lawrence on bass and Patrick Keller drummer.

“It’s a brand new band,” declared White. “It’s not just me and Brendan. Patrick and Jack are very talented musicians. The songs are giant. They’re really large.”

No release date has been set for the Raconteurs’ album, however nothing is expected until White finishes promotional duties for the new White Stripes album ‘Get Behind Me Satan’.

LIAM GALLAGHER BRANDS U2 'WANKERS'
http://nme.co.uk/news/112608.htm
http://nme.co.uk/media/images/Oasis_Liam_200203_M.jpg

The latest targets in LIAM GALLAGHER’s war against the world are U2, who he has branded “wankers”.

The Oasis frontman has been making a splash on the comeback trail, dissing the new generation of rock bands like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs.

But now, Gallagher’s wrath has extended to the old guard, with him lashing out via the Sydney Evening Telegraph after hearing that the U2study video footage of themselves after gigs.

He raged: “Wankers. Haven’t they got fuck-all better to do? I’d rather be out there getting pissed. I certainly wouldn’t go back after a gig and analyse it. No wonder they’re the biggest band in the world: ‘Oh Edge, the fourth guitar solo wasn’t right tonight’. ‘Oh sorry, Bono’. If that’s what people think rock’n’roll is…”

Gallagher’s comment follow U2’s admission to NME.COM earlier this year that one of the reasons they turned down the chance to headline this year’s Glastonbury was because they were uncomfortable about being filmed for television without having control of the edit.

Meanwhile, U2’s televisual assisted Vertigo tour arrives in the UK next week, kicking off at City Of Manchester Stadium on June 14.

COLDPLAY ARTWORK DECODED
http://nme.co.uk/news/112610.htm

The secret behind the artwork to COLDPLAY’s new album ’X&Y’ has been decoded.

This week’s NME sees top art experts attempt to analyze the geometric coloured patterns which feature on the LP’s cover, with opinions ranging from “a pastiche” of Peter Saville’s New Order designs to “geometric abstraction”.

However, NME.COM can reveal that the seemingly random blocks of colour are in fact a 19th century telegraphic code.

Developed by Emile Baudot, the Baudot Code - or the International Telegraph Code No. 1 - was first patented in 1874 and used throughout the world for terrestrial and undersea telegraph links for over 70 years.

However by the mid 20th century, the Baudot Code was supplanted Morse Code as the most commonly used telegraphic alphabet.

The centre pages of the ’X&Y’ inlay shows the full telegraphic alphabet, with the vertical arrangements of blocks representing each letter of the regular alphabet, as well as the coding for numbers and other symbols such as brackets, question marks and ampersands.

When applied to the cover image, it is revealed that the configuration of blocks spells out ‘X&Y’, whilst the message at the back of the album’s booklet says, ’Make Trade Fair’. The colour scheming is merely for decoration.

For your complete guide to ’X&Y’ pick up this week’s NME - on sale nationwide today (June 8).

The Lips Crash "Wedding"

Coyne and Co. lend new song to movie soundtrack, cover Queen

A new song by the Flaming Lips, "Mr. Ambulance Driver," will be featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming summer comedy, Wedding Crashers, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Packed with indie rock -- including tunes from Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley, Bloc Party and Spoon, and a rare early track by Jimmy Eat World -- the CD is due three days before the movie's July 15th release.
Lips frontman Wayne Coyne can appreciate the premise of the film -- about a pair of womanizers who sneak into weddings to meet women -- having recently survived a family ceremony in Pittsburgh. "As the night wears on, it gets a little difficult, what with the old people drinking too much," he confesses. "And there are a lot of 'relatives' you're not sure you even know."

The Lips' track on the album, however, is considerably prettier and more melancholy, as "Mr. Ambulance Driver" was inspired in part by Coyne's sickness and a dark Seventies hit.

"My mother died about a year ago, and there was a mood that came with her illness that felt so desperate -- the shock of thinking about what the future might be," he says. "And I had this folksy, storytelling song about the scene of an accident: The guy is pleading with the ambulance diver to hurry up, but he realizes that the girl he's with is already dead. You know, there was a hit here in Oklahoma in the Seventies called 'D.O.A.,' this real heavy death-rock song about a guy in a crash -- but I wanted to make something more emotional."

The tune will also grace the Lips' long-awaited twelfth album, At War With the Mystics, now due in January or February. ("At some point, you need a deadline," says Coyne. "That's how the Hoover Dam got built!") The band has recorded six songs for the CD, the follow-up to 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

While he described earlier tracks as "progressive Dixieland," mixing banjo with "futuristic jazz," Coyne claims that the Lips recently made a revelatory change in direction. "We really turned a corner when we did a cover of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' a couple months ago," he says. "We were already recording big, epic songs, and somebody here said, 'Sounds like you guys are doing something like Queen.' So we wanted to explore what about Queen has to do with us."

One track in that vein is "The Wand." "We've been recording for about two years," says Coyne. "And as the election happened, when this feeling of utter frustration and defeat came over all the losers out here, I tried to remind people that we still have this power within ourselves. There's this homeless guy who walks around here with this cane, and he thinks he can do magic things with it. Sometimes the belief empowers you more than your actual ability. So this is kind of a protest song on acid -- maybe more trippy than political."

"My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion," which the band has been performing live this year, is another Queen-inflected song. "It's one of these sort of grand, existential, religious-type songs the Flaming Lips have always done," he says, "where you take a miniscule moment in your life and really blow it up."

As for the new album's title, Coyne says, "It's about being at war with the unknown, confronting the invisible forces -- whether they're an internal thing or something outside. The truth-seekers are always at war with the mystics." He pauses before adding, "Of course, this is when people start to question your sanity, when you delve into this territory."

[b]DINOSAUR JR - BACK FROM EXTINCTION!

DINOSAUR JR made their long-awaited UK live return in LONDON last night (June 8th).

Anticipation had been feverish for the first European dates from the proto-grunge pioneers, who played with their original line-up for the first time in over 15 years.

Frontman J Mascis kept the Dinosaur Jr name alive for a series of semi-solo albums throughout the nineties, but this, their 80s incarnation, is considered to be the classic line-up.

And having settled their differences, Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph arrived on UK soil at a time when their influence is in the ascendant through bands like Nine Black Alps and The Cribs.

Taking the stage for the first of two nights at the London Forum, the three members kept chat to a minimum, Mascis speaking only to thank the crowd towards the end.

As well as their cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’, the setlist was, predictably, taken from the band’s first three albums, ‘Dinosaur’, ‘You’re Living All Over Me’ and ‘Bug’.

It was:

’Gargoyle’
’In A Jar’
’Raisans’
’Little Fury Things’
’No Bones’
’Kracked’
’Forget The Swan’
’Repulsion’
’Budge’
’Tarpit’ ’The Lung’
’Sludgefeast’
’Freak Scene’
’Just Like Heaven’
’Does It Float?’
’Mountain Man’

The band play the same venue tonight, and can also be seen tomorrow (June 10) at the Download festival.

RADIOHEAD BREAK SILENCE OVER NEW ALBUM

RADIOHEAD have broken the silence over their new album.

Singer Thom Yorke has told NME.COM sessions for their new album remind him of working on ‘Kid A’.

The band recently regrouped to start rehearsing and recording new songs for the follow-up to 2003’s ‘Hail To The Thief’.

The album, not due until next year, will be the band’s seventh. Yorke told NME.COM that early sessions had seen the band changing the way they work, reminding him of the change between 1997 LP ‘OK Computer’ and ‘Kid A’.

He said: “It’s going well. It’s a bit like ‘Kid A’ – we’re going through a period of change. But that’s good. We’ll get there”

Songs touted for the record include ‘House Of Cards’, ‘Glass Flowers’, ‘Reckoner’ and ‘Arpeggi’.

DAMON ALBARN SLAMS LIVE 8

DAMON ALBARN has slammed LIVE 8 event - and says he will not perform at the event because of its negative portrayal of Africa.

The Blur and Gorillaz star also criticised the lack of black artists lined up for the shows in Europe and North America next month.

In an interview on BBC Radio 4's ’Today’ programme the singer also questioned why some bands were involved in the charity event - and said they should donate royalties from record sales to prove their intentions are genuine.

"I don't want to take part in an event that is so exclusive. Is this the most effective way to help Africa?" he said.

"This country is incredibly diverse. More than ever, black culture is an integral part of society, so why is the bill so damn Anglo-Saxon? If you are holding a party on behalf of people, then surely you don't shut the door on them.

"In a way Live 8 does that: it doesn't make you feel closer to Africa, it treats it like it's a failing, ill, sick, tired place."

Albarn says those performing must prove they really care about Africa.

"It is without question that all the artists that play there will enjoy increased record sales," he added.

"I would feel more comfortable if I felt there was a discussion and that the artists were putting pressure on their record labels to genuinely show that this is an altruistic act and that there is no self-gain in it."

The Darkness respond to Frankie Poullain claims
http://nme.co.uk/news/112639.htm

THE DARKNESS say their new album will not feature any of ex-bass player FRANKIE POULLAIN’s parts – even though he claims to have co-written it.

Poullain broke the silence surrounding his shock departure earlier this week when he told NME>COM that he was in fact sacked from the band in March. He went on to say “the second album is incredible. Co-written by Justin, Dan and myself, I'm convinced it is destined to be a huge success.”

Now the band have issued a statement pointing out that the bass on the new record will be played by guitarist Dan Hawkins, as Poullain “had yet to participate in the recording of the album when his exit from the band was announced, so no re-recording of bass parts will be necessary”.

The statement on the band’s official website added, “We are sorry to see him (Frankie) go but musical differences are musical differences. The mood in the camp is optimistic. We are coming to terms with the fact that Frankie is no longer in the band.”

The band have now left the Welsh studio they were based in for the past few months and have moved to a London studio to complete Dan’s guitar parts and singer Justin Hawkins’ vocals.

The record will contain string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster, famous for his work with Miles Davis, Elton John and Rolling Stones.

One track also features a sitar used by the Rolling Stones legend Brian Jones.

No because it won't be online forever and people are less likely to read it plus I don't post everything the site puts up I am selective as to what I find interesting. NME will invariably get the most posts because it is a good site and is updated daily.

If you want other music news though then I recommend Magnet Magazine (http://www.magnetmagazine.com/) and www.arthurmag.com (http://www.arthurmag.com) for indie news.

I would like to again state I do not post everything NME lists and would like others to contribute to the thread as well.

Also if a particular story attracts alot of discussion it can be split into it's own thread and further add to the forum.

This thread is purely good intention based and community minded.

ZEBULON -- In many ways, it was a pretty typical minor-league ballpark night -- people in ball caps and logoistic T-shirts ate chili dogs and drank beer; ads for BC powder and East Carolina Farm Credit spoke from the outfield fences.

But where dueling Southern League teams usually hold sway, American music cornerstones Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson brought the big leagues to town Sunday at Five County Stadium, home of the Carolina Mudcats.

"Summer days and summer nights are gone," Dylan sang during a riveting closing set. "I know a place where there's something still going on."

All in all, the traveling show seemed perfectly happy to be there. Nelson's bass player, Bee Spears, even wore a Mudcats cap.

"Zebulon, North Carolina!" hollered Carol Young, bassist for the opening act, the energetic, Austin, Texas-based Greencards. "The sun is shining, and you are looking good!"

Catering to the all-ages, mostly white crowd, Young described them as "good music-loving people, good beer-drinking people and good-time people."

Dylan, 64, and Nelson, 72, hold firm places as transformers of the histories of rock and country, respectively -- they both put intensely poetic and personal language at the forefront of their styles. But both have traveled freely in other kinds of music, so it's not so odd that they would choose to hit the summer tour circuit together.

How did these revered Hall of Fame types wind up at the home of the Mudcats? This is the second year in a row that Dylan and Nelson have toured minor-league ballparks together, noted Eric Gardner, the stadium's assistant general manager.

"Our venue and the trek of the tour came together to allow it to occur," Gardner said.

"Last year, we had Trace Adkins and Patty Loveless."

Dylan, looking thin and with shorter hair under a cowboy hat, sang with intense focus and even came out from behind his piano to play liquid, skittering harmonica solos on several tunes. Backed by a rootsy band watching his every move, he mixed '60s and '70s classics with his Grammy-winning fare of the early 21st century.

Starting the night with his voice extremely hoarse -- yes, even more so than the usual Dylan timbre -- the singer recovered as the night went on, often venturing up to caressing high notes. A few songs were duds -- "Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum" remains a mystery -- but there were many great moments. Among them: a waltzing "Times They Are A-Changin'," a banjo-driven "Blind Willie McTell" and "Summer Days," which took on a big-band feel as the band played hornlike riffs.

The crowd before the stage danced and celebrated, cheering at brilliant individual lines such as this one from "Blind Willie McTell": "But power and greed and corruptible seed/Seem to be all that there is."

Nelson took the stage before 7:30 in his familiar black T-shirt and Stetson, tearing at his long-battered Martin guitar as he created jagged, jazzy figures that cut right into the words of his classic country songs. From the perennial opener of "Whiskey River," he relied mostly on tried-and-true stuff such as "Night Life," "Crazy" and even "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," only occasionally touching more recent material such as the Toby Keith duet "Beer for My Horses."

Sometimes Nelson sang as though he had done the tunes a few hundred times too often, but often enough he was on. Particular high points were the rough-and-ready "Me and Paul" and the tender "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground."

An informal survey turned up Dylan and Nelson fans in roughly equal numbers. Fraternal twins Dillon and Brandon Wynne, 14, of Williamston, were Willie men all the way. Die-hard fan Ted Fehskens, 25, of Durham came out to see Dylan for about the 20th time. Another Dylan fan, Meaghan Bird, 26, of Raleigh, lucked out; her boyfriend, Luke Forrest, has followed Nelson since college days in Texas.

Michael Jackson cleared of abuse
Singer Michael Jackson has been found innocent of all charges at the end of his four-month child abuse trial.
There were cheers from fans outside the court as the verdicts were read. The singer had strenuously denied molesting a 13-year-old boy.

He was also cleared of giving the child alcohol and conspiring to kidnap him and his family.

The star left the court in Santa Maria, California, without speaking to the many fans gathered at the entrance.

But his lawyer Thomas Mesereau said: "Justice was served. Michael Jackson is innocent."
The BBC's Peter Bowes in Santa Maria said Jackson wiped his eyes and the star showed "muted emotion" as the verdicts were read.

Santa Barbara district attorney Tom Sneddon, who led the case against Jackson, said he would accept the decision. "In 37 years, I've never quarrelled with a jury's verdict," he said.

He was "not going to look back and apologise for what we've done", he told reporters. "We've done a very conscientious and thorough job."

Judge Rodney Melville told the singer before he left: "Bail has been exonerated, you are free to go."
He also read a statement from the jury saying: "We the jury feel the weight of the world's eyes upon us."

They asked to be allowed to return to "our private lives as anonymously as we came", he added.

The BBC's Daniella Relph said the jury found him not guilty because they "did not believe [accuser] Gavin Arvizo and did not trust his family".

She said there was "complete hysteria" outside court after the verdicts, with the star's music pumping out.

The verdicts on the 10 charges were reached after about 30 hours of deliberations over the last week.
Jackson was in court with family members including father Joe, mother Katherine and sisters LaToya and Janet.

Liam Cassidy of the UK-based Michael Jackson worldwide fan club said he was "ecstatic" at the verdict.

"This is a vindication for Michael but also a vindication for the fans who have stood by him," he said.

"It's amazing, it's great news. It's the best result and it's the only result that we should and could have had."

Jackson's trial began in February and the jury retired on 3 June. More than 100 witnesses took the stand, including Gavin Arvizo and his mother Janet.

Past allegations

The trial was sparked after British journalist Martin Bashir made a documentary in which Jackson admitted sharing his bed with children.

Bashir gave evidence but refused to answer many of the questions put to him.

Jackson's former wife Debbie Rowe spoke in favour of the pop star, but called his entourage "opportunistic vultures".

And actor Macaulay Culkin denied being abused by Jackson when he was a child star. But Mr Jackson did not take the witness stand himself.

Judge Melville, who presided over the trial, allowed past allegations against Jackson to be aired in court.
