You could of bought, burnt, downloaded, stolen, found been given or whatever this is just a thread to tell me your new music and talk about it a little if you want. Give us a short review and why you like or don't like it and what music you rather better by the performer. If it attracts a lot of discussion for a particular band or album then we'll ask to have it split into it's own thread and we can further discuss it in detail there.

Today for $12 AUD second hand I bought these records:
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours:
I'm not a big Fleetwood Mac fan really but I bought it because it is a classic album and probably their best due to the divorce and band turmoil at the time but namely it was cheap, has good cover art and few good songs. If I get bored of it I reckon I'll give it to my dad's girlfriend who is a big fan.

Don Mclean - American Pie:
I absolutely hate must of Don Mcleans work especially the song American Pie itself though I passionately love the song Vincent and it's gentle, simple sensitivity. I think it is one of the most beautiful fan songs ever written and a great song about Van Gogh. I previously had it downloaded but bought the album today as it is so beautiful and never failt to make me tear up.

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms:
I hate guitar wanking and people that have overlong solos and show off but I like itwhen done amazingly well which is pretty rare for me Mark Knopfler is one of the better ones but sometimes he's on the boundary. I also own Making Movies on vinyl which I consider to be their finest album and I grew up with dad playing Brothers In Arms on tape so thought it would be a good addition to my Vinyl listening collection.

Michael Jackson - Thriller:
It's a cult album and recognised as a classic so I got it, it won't get much play from me but every now and then if I feel like dancing like an idiot I'll put it on. The problem with the album is that it is so inconsistent with Thriller, Billy Jean and Beat It being the only good songs on the album really. The Girl Is Mine with Paul Mcartney is one of the worst songs ever written it is cringeworthy and laughably bad with the great comedy line from Michael 'I'm a lover not a fighter'. That said the Quincy Jones production and orchestration is superb and rivals his Sinatra work in areas.

Bob Marley - Legend
It's a compilation which I'm against generally as I believe really good albums work as a journey. However it is a great album especially the live version of No Woman No Cry where the crowd actually sings along in tune. I have had this on CD since I was 11, it is one of the first albums I ever bought and as my CD is pretty scratched I thought I should replace it. What can really be said other than that it is a classic and Marley and the Wailers were all genius and revolutionary?

Edith Piaf - I Regret Nothing
I only know a bit about Edith Piaf and am relatively new to her music but I like it, I will write more when I have favourites, know more and have more to write.

Edith Piaf - ?
This one doesn't seem to have a title other than to say 'mfp' unless it is meant to be a self titled release. Since I'm confused I'll put up the track listing:
No regrets
The three bells
Les croix
Enfin le printemps
Mea culpa
Monsieur le Noble
Marie Trottoir
Les amants de venise
Hymn to love
La Vie en rose
Heaven have mercy
Mon Dieu

Well that's all a pretty damned good haul for $12 if you ask me. Geez I love second-hand stores.

What was the last thing you acquired? What do you make of my haul?

Later note: I know recognise every single song on the Edith Piaf album, that isn't in english and it's fucking fantastic.

Soothing Music For Stray Cats - Edgar Jones - Debut album from the ex-Stairs frontman and La's bassist. This is a great album for anyone who likes cool laid back jazz.

Winner - Big Boss Man Second album from Big Boss Man. Imagine a mix of Booker T & The MG's & Mongo Santamaria but with a singer. The album is full of hammond grooves.

What's It All About? - Rinaldi Sings Debut album from Rinaldi Sings and by far the best album released this year.

The Bureau - The Bureau Recorded in 1981 but only released in England this year. This is Searching For The Young Soul Rebels era Dexys but with Kevin Rowland replaced by Archie Brown.

Assume The Position It's ... - Jarvis Humby Like 60s style garage? If so, get this album. Look out for the U.S. issue on Hard Soul Records as it includes 2 extra
tracks.

Reds Strike The Blues - A Tribute To The Redskins The best tribute album ever? I think so.

One album I missed off my last list was Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg - The Clash This is the original Mick Jones mix of the Combat Rock album. Also included are a few songs which didn't make the final album. The CD also features a 2nd disc which included a great version of Rock The Casbah featuring Rankin' Roger from The Beat.

I bought The Pretenders debut album, If I Should Fall from Grace with God by The Pogues, Adventure by Television, and Johnny Cash live at Folsom Prison all of which are excelent.
The Pogues are probably my favorite from that bunch. And Television are great also. Adveture is a hugely under rated album.
Live at Folsom Prision has several extra tracks than the original release, so that's kickass.

Then a few weeks ago, the local music store was getting rid of about 15 records which were all kinda worn and scratched (and probably nobody wanted to begin with). There was some okay stuff, but also a lot of really bad shit that makes me reluctant to say that I like prog.
Remote Control by The Tubes - not entirely bad, but I won't listen to it much
Nether Lands by Dan Fogelberg - hate it
The Six Wives of henry VIII by Rick Wakeman - pretty bad
Demons and Wizards by Uriah Heep - need to listen to it more to form opinion
War Child by Jethro Tull - not their best, but not bad
The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table by Rick Wakeman - pretty bad
Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent - not bad
Foxy Lady by Cher - haven't listened
Twin Sons of Different Mothers by Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg - haven't listened
Double Live Gonzo by Ted Nugent - not bad
Razor Sharp by The Earl Slick Band - haven't listened
Trilogy by ELP - bad
Weekend Warriors by Ted Nugent - haven't listened
Ted Nugent (self-titled) - haven't listened
Captured Angel by Dan Fogelberg - horrible

Then I also bought Woman King (EP) by Iron & Wine - vinyl. It's amazingly good.
Tom Verlain's debut album - vinyl. Very good.
Rock and Roll Heart by Lou Reed also on vinyl. Not as good as I expected. I need to check out some more of his stuff, though.

Most recently I bout Wheels of Fire on vinyl by Cream and that one by Iron & Wine that i already mentioned.

I'd rather San Quentin to Folsom (I've got both) just because of the religious rubbish he goes on with that adds a different feel to the concert and there's something better about that album anyway. I've never really paid that much attention beyond Marquee Moon to be honest though.

If I Should Fall From Grace With God would be The Pogues second best album behind Rum Sodomy and the Lash and in some ways better. 'South Australia' is probably one of my favourite tracks on that album alongside the obvious 'Fairytale of New York'

Most Prog isn't really worth admitting to liking as people despise wankery for a reason. The closest I really come is with Jethro Tull and more recently with The Mars Volta.

Jethro Tull - War Child: not their best, but not bad
This is actually a really good album but not as good as Thick As A Brick or Aqualung but still really good and it's Ian Anderson in fine form.

"RedZeppelin"@
Then I also bought Iron & Wine Woman King (EP) - vinyl. It's amazingly good.
Couldn't agree more; everythiong Sam Beam does is so soft and beautiful. If you like his work I advise (if you haven't already) buying Sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State, which is in the same vein of music but a lot better (if you can believe it).

Lou Reed - Rock and Roll Heart: also on vinyl. Not as good as I expected. I need to check out some more of his stuff, though.
Not worth it. People often say how Dylan is such an inconsistent let down well tyry Lou Reed, in the 80's during his Metal, Machine Music period he probably made some of the worst music ever, basically only his first two albums are worth owning or possibly a greatest hits wich will be 90% of Transformer anyway if it's a one disc. Laurie Anderson is far more interesting than her husband. If you own everything by The Velvets then don't bother to get anymore. Now Reed is just a pretentious old git making bad versions of The Raven by Poe in musical form and sadly it's his best work in years.

Saturday I bought Black Market Militia's self-titled album, as well as Non-Phixion's The Future Is Now. Both of those albums are dope, if you're into Hip Hop. Today (Sunday) I went to Best Buy after work, had trouble deciding what to get, remembered hearing that this guy Sage Francis was as good as Immortal Technique, and bought that. That was a waste of money. It's supposed to be Hip Hop, but it sounded like rock music, and the beats were just wack. I went back to try and exchange it, but they wouldn't let me. While I was there that second time, I bought Sabac's album Sabacalypse/ A Change Gon' Come. Now that's some good Hip Hop. A couple of months back I bought The Perceptionists' Black Dialog. That's also a dope album. I also bought a 2 disc set of Malcolm X speeches a little over a month ago off of ebay :D .

I just had to get a new "Nevermind" by Nirvana and "Naked " by Talking Heads. . .my old ones were scratched up pretty bad. . .

Last new albums I got:
"Make Believe" by Weezer
"True Love" by Toots & The Maytals
"Legs To Make Us Longer" by Kaki King and
(an original)Self-titled Red Hot Chili Peppers (probably a collector's item. . .I hope so, I don't have a phonograph anymore)

Now if you want to talk about old albums, I've got too many. . .last count (over five years ago) I had about 500 vinyl, 100 8-tracks, 1000 cassettes, and an on-going collection of CDs. . .estimated somewhere around 10,000. . .Many albums I've never even listened all the way through

I recently downloaded Looptroop - Fort Europa.

They've been sugaring up their beats more and more, but it's still good music. Every member of looptroop has been consistently getting better. For a while Promoe was way ahead of the rest of them, but for this album they stepped it up.

I'll probably look into more Cash, since, to be honest, the Folsom prision album is a bit dated.

Marquee Moon is one of my top-5 favorite albums, and of course, Adventure isn't even close. But I highly recomend it still. It has some great stuff on it.

If I Should Fall From Grace With God would be The Pogues second best album behind Rum Sodomy and the Lash and in some ways better. 'South Australia' is probably one of my favourite tracks on that album alongside the obvious 'Fairytale of New York'

Thousands are sailing is also really cool.
So is the instrumental Metropolis.
Really impressive album. The first side is flawless, IMO.

Most Prog isn't really worth admitting to liking as people despise wankery for a reason. The closest I really come is with Jethro Tull and more recently with The Mars Volta.

I actually like quite a bit of prog. Including Pink Floyd (who I assume you like), whose 70s work I would consider progressive any day.

I also really King Crimson, some Yes, Moody Blues, Zappa (often, although ambiguously considered prog), 10cc, Procol Harum, and some other shit.

I really enjoyed The Mars Volta's fisrt album, but that's when I was really into prog. By the time I heard Frances my musical taste had changed.

Couldn't agree more; everythiong Sam Beam does is so soft and beautiful. If you like his work I advise (if you haven't already) buying Sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State, which is in the same vein of music but a lot better (if you can believe it).

Have you heard anything by Devendra Banhardt?

I love the Velvets. And I had heard great thinsg about Reed's solo career.
And I'm not sure if I'm grasping your Dylan comparison. Some of his stuff is "below-par", but in general he is amazing.

Yes but the guy has something like 40 official albums and a lot of it is throw away rubbish especially during his born-again-christian period. Dylan is in my top 3 favourites being Nirvana, The Beatles and him but any die hard fan will admit that his back catalogue is far from flawless so I was just using that as a yardstick to say the Reed is nowhere near as prolific and that most of his back catalogue is total rubbish.

Continue with your discussion kids.

War Child by Jethro Tull - not their best, but not bad
Weak album. Only one good song. The rest is mostly crap.

Trilogy by ELP - bad

Hm...actually, I think it's their best.

I have downloaded the following albums over the last days and I'm rating them from 0 to 10 so you get an idea about how much i like them, but note that I have to give them one or two more listens:

Peter Gabriel - "Peter Gabriel [II]": not bad, the production confuses me, but songs are good even if they aren't classics. 8/10
R.E.M. - "Up": Nice. I wasn't expecting it to be this good. 8/10
R.E.M. - "Reckoning": A bit better than Up. 8/10
R.E.M. - "Fables Of The Reconstruction": another 8. Need to give it another listen though. 8/10
Flaming Lips - "Transmissions From The Satellite Heart": bad. Ugly distortions, mediocre melodies, bad singing. Worse than "Yoshimi...". 5/10
Wire - "Chairs Missing": dissapointing. 7/10
The Stooges - "Fun House": a bit below "Raw Power", but the first 3 songs are really good. 8/10
Comus - "First Utterance": weird folk prog which would suit some pagan rituals in the woods or something. I kinda liked it, so I give it a low 7/10.
Frank Zappa - "Waka/Jawaka": another of those fusion albums. Not bad but not as good as "Grand Wazoo" or "Hot Rats". The first song's pretty good. A very low 8/10.
Neil Young - "Harvest Moon": nice surprise. I liked this one even if I thought it was gonna suck. 8/10
Pulp - "Different Class": not bad but sounds too much like a Bowie rip-off. 7/10

More soon...

I'd agree but I'd give it a far lower score it's irksome really. I know there is meant to be more to them but really TFL only worked as a novelty band when they were first starting out and before Wayne Cooper was grey and self impotant. Fuck he's incredibly dumb; more so than shows in the lyrics if you've ever read an interview with him.

Yeah, but only the first 3 songs are on the same level as the best stuff on Raw Power. The rest is unnecesary. Raw Power, however, is more of a "songs" album.

None. But I had heard "Harvest" before and I didn't like it so for some reason I thought I made a mistake when I started listening to this one. I was surprised so I'm gonna get into his other albums, which is somethign I should have done a long time ago.

Oh, I heard Patti Smith's "Horses" yesterday. It's good but I need to give it a few more listens. It gets a 7/10 so far.

I'd give horses 9/10. Did you know Mapplethorpe shot the iconic cover photograph? Patti Smith is just so hit and miss and her new material isn't much at all really but I know a bloke whi thinks it is her best. Horses is her greatest album and widely recognised as such for a good reason. I think L7 picked up where Patti Smith left off in many ways and the two sat perfectly together on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack.

As for Neil Young; Harvest has some crapper moments such as A Man Needs A Maid but really it's a fucking fantastic album and I fully endorse getting high playing it repeatedly and giving it another chance.

Today I got Be by Common, which is great
can't say much about it since I've had a very limited exposure to hip-hop, but I really like this album
I also got Soul Circus by Victor Wooten
also a good album
This is the guy from Bela Fleck, who I've loved for years, but I never knew Victor was such a talented bassist. Really funky stuff.

One of the best albums I've bought recently is The Woods by Sleater-Kinney.
I haven't heard their previous albums, but this is amazing. I'm probably gonna sound ignorant here, but their music is like a combination of punk and metal. What the fuck am I talking about? I know, it makes no sense. But it rocks.

You'd be better off reading the review of it from pitchfork.com, although it's a bit pop music snob-ish, it's good.

Today I bought Be by Common, which I'm yet to hear. It should be quite good, though.
I also got Gimme Fiction by Spoon. Also haven't heard it.
Eat a Peach by The Allmans. It's really good. Great hippy jam music. Less bluesy than their live album at the Filmore, but good nonetheless.
Also bought Soul Circus by Victor Wooten. Really funky stuff. Really different from his stuff with the Flecktones. It really showcases his technical ability, but also great songwriting, emotion, and soul. Kickass because it has the song "Victa", which is about his name being Victa', and my name is Victor.
Also got Our Endless Numbered Days by Iron & Wine. Not as good as Woman King, but still good. Even more folksy and more rudimetarily produced than his new work.

The Fugs -self titled- Crazy 67' wierd hippy shit. Allen Ginsberg is a member. Timothy Leary co-wrote a song with them. They did an exorcism in front of the Pentagon chanting: "out demons out".

The Chills "The Lost EP"- Washed out Dunedin (cold city in NZ) acid indie circa 81-86. Brooding and dark drone cut with jangly melodic sparkle. Bloody brilliant.

Janes Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Jack Off Jill - Sexless Demons and Scars
just albums ive wanted for awhile that i hadn't had the chance to buy before, at this second in time there is nothing new out there thats worth buying that i haven't already bought

ive already bought NIN - With Teeth (as well as all the other albums except one and seen them live twice) i did really like it but for the few months before it atually came out i had spent practically all my time listening to The Fragile and fell in love with all of Trent's experimental stuff and was kinda disappointed to see all of with teeth being actual songs and radio friendly but still really fucking good

I don't really have any recent hauls, but over the past few months, I have a few favourites:

Xasthur - 'To Violate the Oblivious'
Double LP, #133/500
This album is fuckin' killer. Hateful, suicidal, satanic black metal. What more can you ask for?

Disgorge - 'Cranial Impalement'
This is actually a re-release of their demos, the first half being taken from DAT, the second taken from tape. It's a pretty sick cut, actually.

Disgorge - 'Parallels of Infinite Torture'
This is their newest album. It's insane. The lyrics are sick as hell, too.

Nargaroth - 'Geliebte des Regens'
More depressive, hateful, raw black metal, though more mid-paced than his other stuff. The tracks are long and repetitive, but that's the beauty of it: the simplicity, the emotion, it all forms his more 'conceptual' approach to this album.

Soon-to-be-in-the-mail (maybe):

Nachtmystium - 'Eulogy IV'
Aesthenia - s/t
Avenger - 'Fall of Devotion, Wrath, and Blasphemy'
Judas Iscariot - 'And the Cold Earth Slept Below'

Yeah they do, it's meant to be a lot happier and upbeat. I love the way ( ) sounds so hopeless and cold though. It's a beautifully orchestrated, symphonic album. It's so haunting and empty whilst at the same time being completly full of energy. It's one of the best albums I've ever heard.

Don't get me wrong, I love the other albums as well, but a lot of times I simply throw some disks in and hit random, so it's dissapointing to come across those few tracks that are boarderline silence. The second disk of The Fragile suffers from that a lot where the fist disc and The Downard Spiral only have two, maybe three. Pretty Hate Machine doesn't really loose pace from anything however :)

Hehe, radio friendly? A few of them are, almost to the overly obvious point, but for all of the repeating choruses and easily memorized hooks, I was thrilled to see that Only was chosen as the second single as it was instantly my favorite song on the album.

Ehhh..I dunoo. I don't think it's a terrible bad album and I like more tracks on it than I dislike. I "acquired" it because it's 30 years old and they made a stink about it here in Jersey. Jungleland is probally my favorite though.

recently purchased "Reggae - Gold", a great mix of classic reggae songs that doesn't include Bob Marley

oh and by the way,
I hate Pink Floyd with a passion, Dave Gilmour and Syd Barrett are the only ones of them I respect as musicians; Roger Waters is a sulf indulgent wanker that made horrible music
why do you hate pink floyd so? They pretty much revolutionized popular music. You cant get much better guitar solos, drumming, funky bass lines, chilling vocals or psychedelic sounds then the floyd. Besides, thier music was pretty political. Listen to Animals, it is basically a soundtrack to George Orwell's allegory Animal Farm.

The last album I bought was Megaherz's Himmelfahrt. I like to listen to Rammstein, and I decided to expand into other German rock bands and such. I need to work on my German, however, as it is not very good, and I often have to rely on translations of the lyrics to find out what everything means.

The guy at the local indy record store (I'm so fuckin hip) recomended this album by a French group called Nouvelle Vague. It's a French Artist singing American and British new wave and punk songs in a Brazilian bossanova style. The production arrangements aren't too orginal or distinctive, but the overal product is really creative and cool. I can finally listn to some Joy Division and The Clash and just chill!
If you find it, I would suggest getting it.

Yeah!
That one is really good.

Their sultry vocals kinda overshadow the message, but it's still really cool.
