For the younger of us, they were before our generation, but I love The Band. I want to know what your thoughts on them are?

Their music wasn't political although they were, but not all good music is political.

Once, while stoned and drunk, I slow danced with a hippie to The Band. We kissed, and it would have been sweet if we weren't mutually wasted.

Agreed. I think the Last Waltz was the greatest rockumentary ever, and with all the people there, I don't see how it wouldn't be.

My favorite song is "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". I enjoy most of their stuff, regardless if it's apolitical.

Yeah thats a great song, and don't let anyone tell you it is about confederate pride, it isn't. That is actually one of their more political songs, even though the message was very mild, the message they tried to send was that they want slaves to be free and they don't mind doing the work but the Union fucked up the south beyond all repair.

yeah, Cody, I especially like the part of the Last Waltz of the reunion with Ronnie Hawkins, "Who do you Love", Bob Dylan's hero, of which all the original members of The Band, came out of Hawkins' band, The Hawkes.

RIP Rick Danko!

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down can be controversial if not understood. It's written from the point of view of Robbie Robertson celebrating the fall of the confederacy and the Mason Dixon Line, but as told through the eyes of a ex-confederate solider working the Danville train and watching the south defeated. The Danville track was the main supply route to the confederate soldiers holding Richmond.

A number of people have covered the song most notably, Joan Baez, Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Cash, and Richie Havens.

Yeah, I loved the whole movie it was great, I loved the version of "The Weight" that they played with the Staple Singers and I loved the end when they had Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Paul Butterfield, The Staple Singers and of course the Band to sing "I Shall Be Released."

Yes,but they existed long before and long after they were Dylan's band.

He died in 1999 -- a day after his 56th birthday. It turned out to be a heart attack.

AP death notice.

And Richard Manuel died in 1986, hung himself in a Florida motel room after a reunited gig with The Band.

Here's a bit of trivia.

this house, (photo, link below) called the "Big Pink" that the Band and Dylan rented and recorded several hundred demo's in the basement, of which some of the demos became The Band's "Music from the Big Pink" and Dylan's "The Basement Tapes." is up for sale and has for unknown reasons been up for sale for years and years with no prospective buyers. I live in the area a and the last I knew the house was going for $52,000, ---a steal for a house in West Saugerties-Woodstock, New York where houses are in the $250,000 and up range, and especially given it's legend. But, oddly it's unsellable.

Wow that's surprising, hell if I had the money I'd bye Big Pink.

Here's some irony. Levon Helm, the lead singer for The Band, who I say has one of the best voices of anyone ever, got throat cancer and because of this will never be able to sing again.

Plus the other two singers Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, are both dead.

:(:( yeah, Poor Levon,

Robbie is still doing well as far as I know and recording Native American music in repect of his Mohawk heritage. Good stuff too.

Viva The Band!

The Last Waltz Refrain

Itīs the last waltz
The last waltz with you
But that donīt mean
The dance is over
Itīs the last waltz
The last waltz was through
But that donīt mean
That the party is over

Oh, the last waltz
The last waltz with you
But that donīt mean
The dance is over
Itīs the last waltz
The last waltz
The last waltz was through
But that donīt mean
That the party is over.

Trust me I would join you, also good ole' Garth Hudson is doing fine also, but I don't suspect he has many tics left on his clock.

Oh and you should go to this http://theband.hiof.no/sounds/The_Weight_7...rancisco_CA.mp3 (http://theband.hiof.no/sounds/The_Weight_75-03-23_San_Francisco_CA.mp3) It is a great version of The Weight.
