In America, capitalism is extremely popular. Duh. But not only are many people capitalists, but staunch capitalists. The primary block of voters (the Baby Boomers) are extremely capitalistic. This is mainly because when they hear communist they think about the fear of nuclear holocaust.
So how do we work around, or stop this? Education won't help much because they have deep anti-communist sentiments already. Even people wanting a communist society would never call it that, and would never dare think about supporting it.
So what exactly can we do to help this situation?

Baby boomers-
We should be real - and always tolerant and nice- with them on what we believe. We dont believe in nuclear holocausts. But we should focus more on the youth.

Exactly. I don't mean to be an asshole (though it is fun), but many of the baby boomers will be dead within the next 20-30 years anyway. You're much better off focusing on the youth. They're more open to new ideas and progression. Children are the future, etc.

I don't know if its that simple. A kids parents are extremely influential.
Even during teen angst years and rebellion, if they grew up in a Republican household they'll still be Republicans most likely. And if we attempt any kind of change in the next couple of decades, we have a major chunk of the population just equating us to "lazy commies".
You cant change peoples ideas easily. You can show them the truth and they will more likely than not, block it out of their system and call it commie propaganda.

yeh, but if we oppen the 'youth' to some exposure they'll get to know what we're really about. I mean my family isn't communist, ok my dad's centre left but my mum's quite reactionary really.

If they don't want communism and totally reject it there are only 2 ways they will learn that communism is better and that is:
1) It pains me to say it but when the economic slump comes and it will the way capitalism is going they will learn that capitalism doesn't work
2) Start your own commune and show everyone the what true communism is. They they will learn.

And in counter to your optimism....
1) And how long do you intend to wait for that, secretive, elusive, "economic slump" suddenly comes, and when will it come, and how will you know...if they, the burgeouise media, will even let you be informed of it! As if you would notice any difference. Perhaps it would work, but they would still be hostile to the idea because of prejudices and...Soviet.
2) And how will you get permission for that, and where will it be, and how the hell will you muster enough materials to keep that goin' in a capitalist-world that will always be an ulterior threath to shut the shit down!? HUH! Optimistic fool :P

No you can't. The key is to accomplish something first then people will change their own minds to suit.
Waiting for the "masses" to awaken just isn't going to happen. Actions speak louder than mindless communist blithering.
Upon attemption people'll join you to help, expect nothing before that.

There you go :D

I Used To Be a Neocon (http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig6/oneill1.html)
If you haven't read this, you really should. It gave me some hope to see that some people can wake up on their own.
As for the parental influence, that is very evident, but each generation tends to become more progressive than the last. My grandfather was a conservative Baptist minister, my father is a social democrat who wants to be unionized, and I'm a Communist heading to university. Now, this doesn't mean revolution should become a "waiting game," but it does offer some encouragement in the long run. Society has become more leftist throughout history. Eventually the progression will hit a wall (whether by walking into it or having it smash down on them), and people will realize the significant change that must be made if this progression is to continue. (i.e. the demolition of capitalism)
