Well, if you buy a lot of valuable goods that you don't need, she's right. Surrounding yourself with computers and television is not considered capitalistic characteristics.

Explain to her that those can be essentials in the modern world.

Computers are necessary for me to do most of my schoolwork, and a television is an amazing way to find biased news and other educational sources.

Edit: This should possibly be in Chit-Chat.

Your mom doesn't understand communism. Communism isn't about getting rid of all your material goods and just living with the basics, it's about the emancipation of the working class, and eventually, the human race as a whole.

This is Socialism, not Communism.

Tell her you need her to shut the hell up.

But really.. "need" is based upon environmental factors. While a tribesman in the amazon absolutely needs a spear, I don't. Although it'd be neat. Nor would the tribesman need a computer, although in my environment living without access to one, at the least, would be extremely difficult. Although it'd probably be neat if the tribesman had a computer, too.

Communism/socialism isn't about reducing things only to need and nothing more. The point is to put necessity for all before the desire of one.

Emancipating the working class is an essential step towards communism, and once the entire populous is united as one class, the human race will be free from our commodity driven world.

EDIT:

Sorry, maybe I didn't clarify it enough. (We tend to think we have conveyed what is on our minds, when in fact all we did was spout a bunch of mumbo jumbo). You're right in that the first part of my assertion is socialism. Socialism is still, by nature, a class society, except it is a different class society than any other epoch in history. This is a class society where the larger class asserts control over the smaller class. Communism will be the emancipation of the human race, which I stated earlier. In order for the human race to be emancipated, society must be stateless, and classless. This my friend, is communism, and the human race will be binded by the chains of our material world until this happens.

But that step towards Communism is called Socialism is what I am saying. The emancipation of the workers is Socialism.

I agree with your mom in some aspects, you shouldn't be surrounding yourself with commodities that are probably made by some child in China working twelve hours a day for three dollars. But you shouldn't give up V and especially not internet because it is an excellent advance in technology and an excellent place to learn and share ideas. Tell your mom, that your joining the Nation of Islam and that you can no longer associate yourself with her, see how she reacts to that. :P

It certainly shouldn't be in "Ernesto 'Che' Guevara".

This is very interesting to me, because I am told this all the time. Being a communist who has things for entertainment is much different than a yuppie who has things to help his self-worth.
