View Full Version : The most important freedom?

After thinking abut this for a few days I thought I'd put it to the community and ask what is the most important freedom for you personally.
I'd have to say mine is freedom of movement, that freedom coming from my own countries government. I know that other countries may not let me in or make it very difficult for people to enter their countries. But my own country essentially lets me enter and exit any country of my choosing. Although their is restrictions on what I can take from a country and what I can do regarding purchase of goods and importing them in, as long as I can take my person in and out of any country I want thats good and of the utmost importance.
I also can move myself aound the country to a certain degree, although there are more restrictions in where I can and can't go. So I'm not 100% free to move within my own country.

To sum up :)
The moist important freedom for me is the freedom of movement around the globe and to a lesser degree within my own country.

I think the most important freedom is to be able to do what you want(provided it does not effect other people negitively[as they define]), without fear of patronisation, legal charges, or judgement of any kind.

That's very broad. I want to be able to smoke cannabis. It probably would seem quite frivolous to some people, but I don't care.

the most important freedom for me is freedom of life. to allow me and everyone else to live without racial, sexual or any other minority to live without fear of prosecution or any kind of descrimination. to live where my nation, or any other nation isn't exploited by anyone.
a world where there is no such thing as maquiladoras, or slums or poverty.

It's a tough one.Freedom of movement is quite high on my list too but I think I'd have to go with the freedom to organise/assemble.Without being able to form groups and protest oppressive measures or laws many of the freedoms most people have here would never have come to fruition.

Hey Scargs, even your signature is about the right to organise/assemble, you must care a lot about it!

Yeah Ian,but it still isn't enough on its own. That's what makes this a difficult question. If you have freedom to asemble but have no freedom of speech or freedom of the press then it makes it difficult to get any message out to a wider audience. Also the freedom to organise resulted in the Nazi party and other abominations coming into existence so it not always beneficial. As someone once told me."just because something is a right it doesn't always make it right."
I think there is a degree of truth in that.

Definitely freedom of speech, if you can't make your thoughts heard what good is freedom.

I think the most important, all-encompassing freedom is the idea of self-determination for the individual. It means you can determine the route and aspects of your own life. So you can do what you want, as long as it doesn't interfere or intrude with someone else's self-determination. For this would be an insult to the very thing you believe, a horrid hypocrisy. Unfortunately, this cocept does not completely exist anywhere on this planet, only aspects of it. Hopefully these aspects can be expanded to create complete self-determination. I suppose that would be the ultimate utopia.

at the moment my most important freedom is freedom of belief.

This is because I've just got back from a youth camp which had a mixture of left wing athiests, right wing farmers (well children of farmers) and semi left/nazi Christians.

While I really enjoyed the debates we had, I did realise the importance of tolerence!

Not only should people be free to belong to any religion they wish, no matter how stupid. People should also be free not to have the views of other religions govern them. So if Jim's religion says tv is bad, Jim should not campain for tv to be illegal. THis would be forcing his views on others.

Do I make sense?

As a writer, I uphold freedom of the press. Of course, this may not seem like a pragmatic view to hold, considering the amount of abuse writers face throughout the world. Occupational Hazards, they say.

But fuck it, I'm an idealist. 'Nuff said.

I'd like to add this to avoid confusion. This should be a freedom you currently have.

the most important freedom to me is mental freedom, you know being free to think for your self and be who you choose to be. for example if someone is a chritian, mulism or etc.. and they want to be a marxist they should be able to without being oppressed by those that are atheist and marxist. freedom is the ability to do as one please but one must have that frame of mind.peace

The freedom of political and religious beliefs if it doesn't advocate the murder of anyone unless cause. (Cause could be the overthrow of a gov't because it's violating those freedoms. I don't think people shouldn't advocate an uprising or murder in the name for religion.)

Freedom of national self-determination. Freedom from Yankee imperialism.

This freedom, had it actually existed, would have quite likely brought forth world socialism by this period of time.
