View Full Version : An Idea

There should be some events that occur monthly on this forum for entertainment. An idea would be a topic for debate is picked, two users from opposing ideologies and two users from the mentally insane are picked and they debate but there's a twist. The two people from opposing ideologies have to argue in favor of say communism and the two from the asylum argue against it. Just an idea and i'm not real serious about it at this point. I have too much fun reading the absurd suggestions and shooting them down with my dual syntax cannons. ; p

Maybe someone can elaborate on this idea or form another one.

I'd like to do that. Unfortunately it seems that many posters would resort to the typical "Bu$h=Hitler" and "commies are teh dumb" tactics. However, if you are serious about this, then pick a topic of debate and I'll be more then glad to debate you on it.

Choose one of the following issues for or against:

-War in Iraq
-Immigration (legal and/or illegal)
-U.S participation in one of the following: Kyoto Treaty, the International Criminal Court, etc..
-U.S containment foreign policy during the Cold War
-Debt relief and/or foreign aid spending
-Nuclear option in Congress
-Commercial media vs. Public Broadcasting
-etc............

I would be willing to play devil's advocate, so you can choose any topic you wish.

Well the moderators could close the thread and limit the posters to the two debate teams. Otherwise it would be too similar to a regular thread.

No, we would just have to ignore any flames/spam brought up by other posters.

Rules would be:

-Do not respond to any other poster's comments
-No flaming, spam, name-calling, etc..

All we need to do is choose a topic and as I said, I am willing to play devil's advocate, so you can choose anything you want. I only ask that it be a pragmatic issue.

It should actually be an issue not discussed in depth on this board. Remember the point would be to avoid a typical thread. This is supposed to be an interesting event. Maybe it won't work out and it will just manifest into a regular thread but new ideas are welcome.

So let's do this. Pick a topic I listed above or a new topic. I would like to see how good your "debating skills" are.

P.S. I strongly doubt that there has been any in depth discussion about say the nuclear option here, hell, there probably hasn't even been any regarding the ICC or Kyoto.

Alright, it seems your stalling and don't want to do this fine. If anyone else is interested, pick one of the issues I posted or another issue to debate.

I shall propose a new topic, and this has actually come up in my english class:

Is masturbating cheating on your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse?

regarding the ICC
The ICC is like any international legal body. It's weak and it will always be weak until we have some sort of world government or until governance develops to the point where states will adhere to these bodies either out of a new sense of duty and responsibility or until some sort of enforcement mechanism is developed that doesn't infringe on state sovereignty and that won't lead to accusations of "imperialsm." At present I doubt this is possible. Because of this weakness I think the ICC, like the UN or any int'l body is highly susceptible to fall victim to power politics of great powers.

This is an in-depth as I can get right now without any references to look up

I apologize if I ruined the point of this thread.

Only if you do it on/with/to someone else.

And that must be one rockin' English class!

Or one very sad English class.

You should debate me at the link I sent you before via PM. I fear that the trolls would make a real debate impossible with you here.

Its a little of both.

My English teacher is a semi-leftist (our version of Leftist, not the US), ex-CIA agent. He was a spy.

Me thinks that this idea is interesting.
Me also thinks that this thread should only be used to organise, not debate.

Once people have joined the debate (three from the asylum arguing for communism and three against for example) then a new thread should start.

It should follow the debate format of first person giving main arguements, second person rebuting 1st (and 2nd) speaker plus introducing new arguements, third person summing up all arguements for and rebutes against.

I volunteer to make sure people stay in line, and also to choose a topic, 'why "anarco-capitalism" is a good idea'. Any complaints well I guess you could complain. Thus we need three people not restricted to argue for that, then three restricted people against.

I'm up for it. Tell me what issue and what side to take.

I nearly slipped into a coma yesterday from boredom, so I NEED this.

One to argue against '"anarco-capitalism" is a good idea', unless you would like another topic.

Now I need two more binned members to argue against this, and another couple for it.

The idea is great.
Cappies for Communism and commies for Capitalism...
Sounds charming

I'm sorry I didn't respond to your post minutes after you posted as I have a life outside of the internet. Although I noticed you left it up to me to decide on the topic rather than simply starting one yourself. Thanks. I appreciate your honestly self acknowledged inferiority. ;)

Is masturbating cheating on your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse?

It isn't cheating. It does signify that there's some sort of break down assuming the relationship has been physical prior to the self fun. Or maybe the guy or girl simply loves masturbating more than sex. It could be worse.
