Plan Colombia IS "dead". That is, it's formal period of existence has ended.

HOWEVER, Rice was in Colombia recently, and promised to continue funding, regardless of Plan Colombia. (Did you REALLY expect otherwise?). Also, while Plan Colombia is 'dead', Plan Patriota is not (despite the blow it suffered with the overthrow of Gutierrez).

Plan Colombia is dead! Long live Plan Colombia! :(

So the drug trafficing is the fault of the locals? The Yankees want the cocain, so maybe the problem should be dealt with there?

I think the article says it best:

"Plan Colombia was designed to eradicate narcotics, control powerful left-wing guerrillas and strengthen the position of the US military in South America."

I think that the left wing guerillas in colombia have won a major victory. However it should not be taken for granted that left-wing groups take part in drug traficking, that's just the medig talking.
With the U.S out the next target for the left-wing guerillas should be the Colombian government and the drug czars, this should be undertaken to prevent Colombia from becoming another Afghanistan which is the principal supplier of Heroin and Hashish in Pakistan and India.

Uhm...the FARC are sort of part of the drug trafficing, they just put a tax on it, I saw this documentary the other day about "terrorist" organisations, most of the show was sheer propaganda (Sendero Luminoso are followers of Che Guevara?) but they interviewed some high FARC guy (2nd in command IIRC) and he just called it "putting tax on the goods", which I can understand, they need to make money, why not poison your enemy while making money of it.

Why do you necessarily think the drugs will end up in the hands of the "enemy"?

Redstar , I too am searching for other sources on this and have turned up nothing. The silence on this is very very unusual. If you find anything please post it. Thanks and good day.
