So, at least in the states, the idea of a socialist prty mas become something of an oxymoron. plenty of socialists, no organization. also, there are problems with the name socialism. it has some baggage attached. For more info see Redstar2000 and his page. In his article populism was suggested, but thats even more baggage from the Gilded Age. how about social reformists? The ideas of socialism and communism depend highly on social reform, and the name doesn't have any skeletons in its proverbial closet. The premise of reforming welfare to eliminate those who abuse the welfare system would appeal to republicans as fiscally condservative and greater government involvement in the medicaid and social security would appeal to democrats as as sign of governmental responsibility. small similarities such as these might help ease the us into a more socialist government resembling spains. as much as we speak of revolutions the military coup is not an option in the us without WIDESCALE support something we simply do not have.

I do think we need a new name -- my suggestion was "Revolutionary Workerism".
But I don't think we need a "party"...political parties are a bourgeois invention, designed to achieve power in a bourgeois electoral system. I don't think that's of any use to us.
On the other hand, your question really relates to what reformists should call themselves to maximize their popular appeal.
How about the "Christian Reform Party"?

There is only so little a name by itself can do, a new name would also be demonised just as quickly, because it was demonised by the ruling class and its defenders, because of the ideas that socialism contained more than anything else.
The premise of reforming welfare to eliminate those who abuse the welfare system would appeal to republicans as fiscally condservative
A socialist party would never appeal to anyone fiscally conservative in the first place and one would expect that they would be intelligent enough, to know, that this new party, would be in favour of increasing welfare, not decreasing. A party should not appeal to people on false pretenses.
small similarities such as these might help ease the us into a more socialist government resembling spains
Spain's current government is social democratic, not really socialist by conventional standards but they would be consider further to the left than the Democratic Party in the United States is

i sense an error in my typing. i din't mean a new party. a new name yes. and i disagree with your second point. all political organizations have reformist tendencies or else they'd be the same. if no one want to reform and change the system, why have different political organizations. we all need popular appeal or we can;t bring about change. if your ideals and message are wonderful but your presentation comes across as radical and unbased in reality, you lose support from the common man. if you prsent a quality idea like socialism under an intelligent banner with easy to understand concepts, you stand better than the person who comes across as radical and unrealistic.

"Christian Reform Party"?
You know, ultimately, I think even reformists would recognise that this would do more harm than good - and reinforce the narrow terms in which political debate occurs.
I think the "New Democratic Party" reached a reasonable midpoint. *shrug*

I still don't think the Jimmy Joe Bobs and Bubbas in the USA are gonna buy it. Do you think there are a lot of Jimmy Joe Bobs and Bubbas in the USA? Enough to make you life misserable if you try to form a party with a new image?

no no no its not a new party, just a revamped old party. If you change the name, it doesn't change your party. and the silly little colloquial names don't get you anywhre. i live in Rural North Carolina, a very red state, and theres alot of support for social reform. It you can get past your obsession with stereotypes, you can garner supporet from previously unsympathetic group like republicans who want social reform, or democrats eho seek greater governmental responsibility. And if these so called Jim bobs or whatever wanted to make my life miserable, it would have been going on for quite some time now jackass. Maybe in YOUR small-mindedness you've lost the greater picture of america.

OK. But....
If you stood a soap box, in any main street visited by Jimmy Joe Bobs, and preached communism; how long would it be before you got lynched?
1 minute
2 minutes?
3 minutes?

.
Social reform, yes, you got me there, but NOT communism.
May I further add I don't think your going to fool Jimmy Joe Bob with a new name and new posters. They are still going to see you as a communist. Do you agree?

Considering that you believe china to be communist, i could shout at you the communist manifesto begining to end youd think it was the 4th installation of lord of the rings and engage in chronic masturbation.

I see RedStar, just give it that name since a communistic party in a capitalistc system could just be that unserious, since it's meangless. As for "AhMC", aslong as you don't use the regular name of Communism and preaches it's message, do you think the "regular guy" would be smart enough to know it's that under the guise, eh? Would you be lynched then? Do anyone lynch people of political messages I think the "guys on the floor" actually agree with - in secrecy? Unless they're brainwashed, I think not. Just in case, we'll take a few comrades with us for "protection", but I doubt it would be needed. The police - the extended longer arm of Capitalism, however, would be more greater threath, so I'd advise a bit against it, but inviting people to a speech in a more "anonyme" locale under the guise of..whatever, "cotton candy sale"? Heheheheheheh ;)
